James Bond: Quantum of Solace (spoilers involved)

So has anyone else been trying to come up with SPECTREish backronyms for the "Quantum" organization? It's pretty hard. Those Q's and U's are kind of awkward to work with here.

The few even half-good ones I've thought of so far:

Quiet Union of Allied Network Terrorist UltimatuMs.

"QUestionable Activities", Not Terrorism, Underhandedness and Murder

QUiet Agreements Never Taught Us Much

...Who says Quantum stands for anything?

Who cares? It's traditional for Bond-villain organizations to have acronym names(SMERSH, SPECTRE and in the From Russia With Love videogame, OCTOPUS). I think having the letters in Quantum stand for something makes it cooler.

Besides, it's fun.

Actually, SMERSH is a real counter spy organization.

I think the biggest problem with this film versus Casino Royale is that it just focused on one element of what was great about Bond's characterization in that film: the grit. Sure, Bond was in some vicious fights and he bled and ran after people and stuff, but there was so much more to Casino Royale than just that. Casino Royale was truly a Bond film in that it stripped him down (no pun intended) to the contradiction he really is: a thuggish gentleman, an egotistical connoisseur of fine food, drink and sex, with a bit of a penchant for violence. Everything about the movie reflected this, even the title song.

As good as it was, Quantum of Solace was just trendy revenge-action film and other than a few precious moments (e.g., teachers on sabbatical who just won the lottery) and in spite of Daniel Craig's magnificent performance, Bond was so mostly in name-only. This is the problem I have always had with the Timothy Dalton films as well. Just because Bond is rougher, doesn't mean you can forget all of the other key elements to his character.

Do we have a general James Bond discussion thread? Because I just watched Licence to Kill and I want to discuss it. Just move the post into that thread, if there is one, because I can't find it.

Licence to Kill is one of the most under-rated Bond movies ever and one of the best action movies, I've ever seen. It's frighteningly similar to Quantum of Solace, to the point where QoS almost seems like a bad remake of LtK. Also, Timothy Dalton is the most under-rated Bond actor ever and may even be the best Bond. Craig owes an awful lot to Dalton.

It finally opened in New Zealand a couple of days ago and I just got back from it. Very entertaining. I had read a lot of bad reviews so I wasn't expecting much, so I'm glad it delivered. Not quite as strong as Casino Royale, but probably a lot more entertaining.

The opening was surprisingly cool. I even really liked the song after not feeling anything for it when I first heard it. It was neat though.

Dominic Greene is a creepy mother****er. Another great Bond villain.

I think Olga Kurylenko may be genetically perfect. She was so hot. Gemma Arterton wasn't bad either, though her character seemed kinda weak. Did Bond really leave her alone with Greene? I like that her first name was Strawberry.

I would've liked to see more of the American and CIA involvement... it seemed like it was going to be a major plot but it just lingered in the background and then sort of vanished.

I did find some of the action scenes a bit choppy, especially at the start. It was quite hard to make out what was happening though it improved over time.

Overall, very good movie and one I will watch over and over again like Casino Royale. I think this franchise has still got a long way to go before it gets boring again and I'll be looking forward to the next one.
