Ocean's 13

I just saw this tonight. It was, predictably, great. In fact, I've placed it just below 300 on my 2007 movie list with a 4.5 our of 5.

I think one intangible that really helped me enjoy it is the fact that I watched National Security this morning after work. I liked the movie, I'm a big American history buff, particularly Revolution era so it really "spoke'' to me, plus I'm a Nicolas Cage fan. But. . . everytime the bad guy had something on the main character the main character just gave in and did whatever he was told. He was a huge wuss and it got on my nerves.

In Ocean's 13 the good guys had the upper hand the whole time and you knew it. Any obstacle that came their way they had a counter for. They were never in any trouble and they never wussed out. It was way more fun to watch them just march in and destroy their enemy.

ah.

I finally decided to type up my Ocean's 13 plot that I came up with like a year before the movie was released. I told it to Ice a couple of months ago and he liked it, so I thought I'd post it here and see if anyone else did.

I wanted to do a lot of things with the third movie. I wanted it set in another country/continent (Japan/Asia), I wanted them robbing something new (bank/armoured car), I wanted the introduction of Linus' dad since we got his mother in Ocean's 12, and I wanted the introduction of another female love interest - this one would logically be for Linus, since he's the main character after Danny and Rusty.

I also wanted to tie together the previous films in a way that seemed suitable. I've most likely missed a whole load of things since it's been a while since I've come up with it, but here's the basic plot:

It begins with François "The Nightfox" Toulour (Vincent Cassel) breaking into Terry Benedict's (Andy Garcia) casino vault, just like the Ocean's crew did back in Ocean's Eleven, while the opening credits start. Once he gets into the vault, he does his small victory dance.

Danny (George Clooney) and Tess Ocean (Julia Roberts) are walking to a restaurant. Tess is complaining about something to Danny, who simply smiles and shakes her off. The two sit down at a table and we see they are having lunch with Terry Benedict.

Ocean tells Benedict that he owes him nothing, but Benedict tells him about how someone robbed his casino yet again. Benedict is willing to pay Ocean and his crew 10% of the money to steal it back. Ocean raises it to 20% and they make a deal.

Benedict gives Ocean the name and location of the culprit: Toulour, and he's in Tokyo, Japan. They have two weeks.

Ocean gathers his crew together, which include: Robert "Rusty" Ryan (Brad Pitt), Linus Caldwell (Matt Damon), Virgil Malloy (Casey Affleck), Turk Malloy (Scott Caan), Yen (Shaobo Qin), Frank Catton (Bernie Mac), Basher Tarr (Don Cheadle), Livingston Dell (Eddie Jemison), Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould) and Saul Bloom (Carl Reiner).

The group arrives in Tokyo and immediately set to work. Toulour has the money hidden in a bank vault, managed by Colonel Kinpatsu Sokomachi (George Takei). Sokomachi likes to gamble at a local casino with Toulour every Friday night, and is sometimes joined by his beautiful daughter, Yuko (Lucy Liu).

As Sokomachi is ex-military, the bank vault is very well secure, and uses a system that only three people in the world have gotten past before: Toulour, Ocean and somebody not revealed yet.

After a week of hard planning (Linus thinks dating Yuko is hard planning), the crew attempt to steal the money. Rusty distracts the Colonel and Toulour by entering a poker game with them while Ocean, along with the help of the rest of the crew, enters the vault. Just as he is about to grab the money, the alarm rings and he is caught.

He ends up in a Japanese prison cell, while the group stress over what to do next. Danny was the only one among the group who was able to get past the system, so they think they've lost. It is at this point that Rusty suggests they bring in the only other person to do so besides Toulour, and ignoring Linus' complaints, they bring in his dad.

Martin Caldwell (Dustin Hoffman), the very man who trained Ocean and Rusty and the group get back to planning. On the very next Friday night, they repeat the plan, but with Martin replacing Ocean's position. He successfully breaches the vault and gets the money.
Meanwhile, Rusty participates in a tense game of poker with Toulour (the Colonel is noticeably absent; Toulour reveals he defeated him rather harshly in a previous game). Rusty eventually wins, and Toulour angry, attempts to leave. Isabel Lahiri (Catherine Zeta-Jones), Rusty's girlfriend and Europol detective, arrives and arrests Toulour for various crimes.

During this, Benedict arrives in his private jet and steps out to greet the armoured vehicle bringing his money back to him. They hand over a briefcase which he opens, shocked to find only a mysterious note and bags filled with shredded paper, instead of his money.

Benedict has his men drive him to the address written on the note, and gets out of the car. He comes face to face with Danny Ocean, who tells him to sit.

Ocean explains how The Colonel explained everything to Ocean after Toulour beat him. Via flashbacks, we see how Toulour stole the money from the casino, and then made a deal with Benedict: Toulour would give all the money back, but wanted to see Ocean pay for his previous actions. The two concocted a plan which left Ocean rotting in a Japanese prison. Benedict would have his money delivered via an armoured car in two weeks.

However, the crew decided to act out as if they didn't know, in order to trick Toulour and Benedict. Flashbacks show Isabel getting Ocean released from the prison.

Benedict is not amused. He asks where his money is. Flashbacks show Martin taking the bags of money and swapping them with the bags of paper. It is the bags of paper that are taken via armoured car to Benedict. Martin and the rest of the crew escape with the money.

Ocean tells him that 50% of the money is waiting back at his casino. The other half, the crew are taking for themselves. Ocean tells Benedict he's retiring, and doesn't expect to see him again.

Final scenes show Ocean approaching Toulour, who now sits in Ocean's previous cell in the Japanese prison. Toulour says he's escaped from prisons before and he'll be back. Ocean says he'll be waiting.

We see Rusty and Isabel visit her father. We see Linus introduce his new girlfriend to his parents.

We see the rest of the crew finally living in peace, their pockets a lot heavier.

So, would you go see it?

So, would you go see it?

Yes, I bloody well would.

It's really frickin' cool but there's the same problem with it I feel that the other two films had: Over-complications for dramatic effect.

There is an element of the characters doing set-ups and fakes in order to hustle the audience as opposed to the characters in the film.

The first film really feels like this plan is done properly. They have one double-bluff, and that's the raid on the bank vault, and it's an ingenious solution to the problem of getting away with the money. The second film has this bizarre farce where they try to steal the treasure the day after they've stolen it. And the third film, while more entertaining than 12, throws Tolour in almost out of nowhere.

In your pitch for example, there's no reason for Danny to take the job. The whole premise is he's being paid to get back Benedict's money. But he can refuse. And he loses nothing by doing so. So why would Danny go to such lengths to get 50% of Benedict's vault? He's already robbed it and gotten 100% of it. See what I mean?

That said, I think your idea was feckin' A, and would've enjoyed it had it been #13, no question. I would've said, "Better than 12, not as good as 11." Which is what I said about the real #13. So kudos to you, Proj!

Also, the synopsis was very lucid and well told. :D

Yeah, that is a plot hole not that you mention it. Then again, the other movies have had fairly large plot holes as well... maybe it's all part of the tradition. :)

Back on the actual movie talk, Ocean's 11 is still my favourite, followed by Ocean's 12 and then Ocean's 13. I really liked Ocean's 12, as it was the first one I saw. I enjoyed the whole European heist feel to it, and while it was cool to see them back in Las Vegas for 13, I was disappointed because I wanted to see something new.
