Sonic 4 (Could this save the franchise?)

Re: New 2d Sonic!! (Could this save the franchise?)

Sega has announced that the game formerly known by the codename 'Project Needlemouse' is actually Sonic the Hedgehog 4.

Sonic 4, we're pleased to report, heralds a return to his two-dimensional roots. In other words it's a side-scrolling, high-speed, gold ring-collecting action/platform game, just like the good days of the Mega Drive. That's certainly no bad thing in our book – especially given the travesties of recent outings. Furthermore, being a bit, y'know, old school the new game doesn't require the large storage capacities offered by DVDs or Blu-Ray discs. Instead it's bound for download via Xbox LIVE Arcade, WiiWare and the PlayStation Network this summer.

The other significant component of Sega's announcement is the new name – 'Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1'. Sega doesn't illuminate on the implications of this, but it certainly looks like there will be other episodes in the pipeline. Let's just hope that this is more than a means to pick our pockets several times over.

And that's pretty much all there is to know at the moment, save to inform you that Sega has just launched an Official Sonic 4 website that boasts a number of countdown clocks, each ticking away towards the unveiling of new gameplay information, concept art and so on. In short we'll have plenty of reasons to be checking www.sega.com/sonic4/us/index.html over the next few days, and we'll be sure to report back with the juiciest details.

Re: New 2d Sonic!! (Could this save the franchise?)

I am so stoked for this, I can't wait.

I hope Sega goes down this road with a few more of their more 2-D friendly games. I'd kill to see Vectorman get this kind of treatment, even though at the time of release it's graphics were already pretty damn impressive

I've got my fingers crossed for Kid Chameleon and Comix Zone.

It's a bold move calling it that, but it looks really great and actually like something I'd want to BUY let alone play.

This should be for Sonic what 'New Super Mario Bros.' was for Mario.

I was playing Knuckles in Sonic 2 today on my wii. The trailer made me pull out my Sonic Mega Collection on gamecube with my memory card and pad. God I loved the old sonic games and Sonic adventure 1+2

It has started.

I would say that doesn't apply here. As Sega have made a point of saying no extra people so no new friends. Plus it looks like Sonic 1-S&K style of game. It's pretty impossible for it to end up like "unleashed" and others as it's been built to be like the original. The worst case scenario I see is either a) People will be comparing it to "New Super Mario bros" which wouldn't really be fair. Or b) people will complain at the episode release.

Personally I think most old Sonic fans will enjoy this. However the people who think Heroes - Unleashed were good will most likely not like this. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it will be a great game.

Now that aside I do chuckle at it be been released on Wiiware. Nothing wrong with Wiiware as such (besides limited file sizes) but the first trailer made a point of highlighting HD The wii's not HD! but still I know it'll be SD on it. I plan to get it from PSN when it's released.

Re: New 2d Sonic!! (Could this save the franchise?)

"Story thus far:

It began as Sonic's animal friends begin disappearing from South Island. Soon Sonic discovers that evil scientist Dr. Eggman has been kidnapping them and turning them into robots to collect the legendary treasure - The Chaos Emeralds. Sonic decides it's up to him to save them and embarks on a quest to free his animal friends. Sonic battles Eggman through many different zones. Sonic eventually pursues Eggman to Final Zone where the first in many epic battles between them begins. In the end Sonic is victorious and Eggman's Mecha fly's away badly damaged. Sonic returns to Green Hill Zone and re-unites with his friends.

Their reunion is short lived however, as Eggman resurfaces and begins kidnapping Sonic friends again, in an effort to create more workers to finish his ultimate Weapon - The Death Egg! Teaming up with the newly met, Miles 'Tails' Prower, Sonic embarks on a new mission through West Side Island in an effort to free his friends and ensure Eggman does not obtain the 7 Chaos emeralds to fuel the Death Egg.

Once the West Side Island is freed, Sonic and Tails eventually board the Tornado and assault the Death Egg itself. After destroying Mecha Sonic, Eggman flees and enters his new Eggman Robot attacking Sonic! After a heated battle Sonic destroys the Eggman Robot and the Death Egg begins to explode.

Sonic and Tails fly down and come across mysterious island called Angel Island. This island is floating by the power of the precious stone called Master Emerald, but now this mysterious island are dropping down to the ocean surface because the Death Egg had been falling on this island. Sonic and Tails are attacked by a Red Echidna named Knuckles the guardian of the island.

Knuckles steals the Chaos emeralds from Sonic, being tricked by Eggman that he is an enemy come to take the Master Emerald. While Sonic and Tails are entangled by Knuckles, Eggman repairs the Death Egg and preps it for launch.

Sonic manages to jump on Death Egg just as it's flying off. After confronting Eggman on the Death Egg, Sonic defeats Eggman once more and the Death Egg plummets back to Angel Island.

Back on the ground Dr. Eggman begins the repairing Death Egg again. Feeling Knuckles has served his purpose, he sends EggRobo to eliminate this potential threat. EggRobo finds Knuckles relaxing in Mushroom Zone and drops a bomb on him but Knuckles manages to survive. Enraged, the Wild Echidna sets off to defeat EggRobo. Meanwhile Sonic and Tails explore the island to find traces of the Death Egg and find out Eggman's fate. After and Epic showdown between Sonic and Knuckles, Eggman uses the opportunity to finally steal the Master Emerald and re-launches the Death Egg. With the power of the emeralds, Sonic goes after Eggman, who has taken the Master Emerald into space.

Sonic and Tails secure the Master Emerald and return it to Knuckles on Angel Island. With it's power restored, the Angel Island lifts off into the sky as Sonic and Tails fly off into the sunset.

But this humiliating defeat only serves to further Eggman's rage, and he has determined once and for all to rid himself of Sonic. Eggman revisits - and improves - the very best of his creations to defeat our spiked hero.

And so a new Adventure begins...

Like they say
Eggman revisiting and improving the very best of his creations seems intriguing. We already know some of the classic stage enemy Badniks are making a return, but could we also be facing classic bosses from Sonic 1, 2 and 3 in new, reimagined form in Sonic 4? And, if so, which ones?

I'm hoping for a new Metal Sonic that's more like the one in sonic II

Labyrinth Zone is a typical zone though as it looks like others before it e.g ruins zone.

But also this is been made for more classic fans. It's like New Super Mario Bros Wii was built for older fans (as well as new ones) but featured the old ice world , sand world ect... this the same it'll just be a new spin on older themes so older fans will play and be more nostalgic

With Sonic 4, Sega promised to put their flagship series through the gameplay strainer, and they've done exactly that, consigning the cutscenes, werehog fighty bits and clingy losers such as Big the Cat to the drainpipe, leaving nothing remaining but fat, juicy lumps of fun.

Sonic 4 is to Sonic as New Super Mario Bros was to Mario – the essence of the series purified, distilled and, in a way, stereotyped. But while Mario's always been comfortable starring in games of variable complexity (the main reason why the facile NSMBW failed to charm our socks off), Sonic has always been a recipe best left unseasoned. Give us some speed, a time attack mode and an egg-shaped tubster to bash after every three stages and we're happy.

Re: New 2d Sonic!! (Could this save the franchise?)

Blue skies, red shoes and golden rings, tied together with chequered tiles, corkscrews and springs. These are the things that great memories are made of, but it's impossible to talk about Sonic the Hedgehog without acknowledging how tarnished they've now become, with nearly every entry within the past decade marred by missteps, mishaps and plain bad design. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I promises to be entirely different; it takes those memories of long afternoons spent dashing and spinning against ever-colourful backdrops at a time when it wasn't parallax barriers but parallax scrolling that was the buzzword, and it makes its business nothing simpler than polishing them and refining them. The result, we're delighted to report, is quite dazzling.

Marking the first entry in a new episodic approach – although SEGA's yet to reveal how many episodes to expect or how frequent they'll be – Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I is so reductive in its approach to the series' formula that it makes Sonic 2 seem bloated and Sonic 3 feel like an exercise in abstract expressionism. Every bit of excess fat that the games have accumulated over the years has been stripped away (and when Sonic games have descended into delivering water-weak mimics of God of War it's fair to give a diagnosis of morbid obesity), and it's a thrilling discovery to realise that Sonic's core concept is still as brilliant as ever.
