Issue-Spider-Man: The Other, What if Spider-man had rejected the Spider?
Writer-Peter David
Pencils-Khoi Pham
Colorist-Marte Garcia
Synopsis-Celebrated author Peter David takes a stab at an alternate ending to Spider-Man;The Other.
The story begins with the Watcher explaining how Peter Parker in the "616" universe (the Watcher actually uses this term) had to make a choice to either accept or deny the spider side of his powers. Hibernating inside of a cocoon, he entered a "dreamscape" where he met his spider spirit guide. Unlike in "616"
where he accepted his spider side, in this issue, Peter fights and eventually kills his spider spirit guide, thus denying his "inner" spider.
Because he destroyed his guide, Peter had no way to escape his "dreamscape". He stayed trapped inside his cocoon, where, he might stay permenently. Unlucky for him, the symbiote, which currently resides on Mac Gargan who is in prison, senses Peter trapped in the cocoon, and can tell he is vulnerable. He leaves Gargan immediately and escapes from the prison. The symbiote eventually finds Peter's cocoon under the Brooklyn Bridge and enters it. Since Peter is trapped in his "dreamscape" with no way to escape, he is forced to endure The symbiotes mental and physical assaults, until at the end, his psyche is destoyed. What emerges from the cocoon is a new creature, called Poison. Poison then goes to Avenger's tower to find Mj, and asks that she leave with him to mate and make others like him. Mj, realizing that Poison is not truly Peter denies him and Luke and Wolverine burst in to resue her. Poison is able to defeat the two heroes and asks Mj to again leave with him. Mj states that she would rather die, and Poison tells her that it doesn't matter if she is dead or not, he can make it work anyway. The have a staredown, and eventually Poison leaves. There seemed to be enough of Peter left in Poison to force poison to leave MJ be. The story ends with Poison digging up Gwen Stacy's grave, putting the corpse inside a cocoon, and waiting for his new bride to emerge.
Review- This is a dark tale that Peter David spins expertly. Even though I was dissatisfied with The:Other, I really enjoyed this tale.
