The Top-5 Everything Of The Decade

I saw this and it wound me up.

"Best TV Show" and not only is crap like 24 and ALIAS, but no one mentions THE SOPRANOS. Or ROME. Or THE WIRE.

And I was annoyed at io9's list of 'sci-fi movies of the decade' where they put in THE DARK KNIGHT (WTF?!) but apparently, SHAUN OF THE DEAD didn't count.

SHAUN OF THE DEAD and THE WIRE are completely forgotten in all these top 10's, even though they're stupidly awesome.

I love cracked, I'm just pissed off at all these 'lists' and no one seems to have seen THE WIRE or BREAKING BAD or ROME.

You're reading the wrong lists.

Well Sopranos start in 99, I've seen it disqualified on that basis somewhere else.

I didn't click on it cause I can't stand lists nor the conversations and general *****ing the follows. But to be fair the *****ing can be justified

Bass.... the list is "for better and worse". It's like Time Magazine's Person Of The Year. Look at the reasons they give for each of the shows you name. Under no circumstances whatsoever did Breaking Bad have a bigger impact on television in the 2000s than 24 or The Writer's Strike did. They also listed "My Humps" as one of the songs of the decade.

I have issues with some of the reasons they give in terms of importance, i.e. "Alias introduced the concept of a plot that provided questions instead of answers".... I guess Robert Brockway, who is older than me, doesn't know what an "X-File" is, but other than that each of those shows, sadly, either had a larger influence on, or say more about, the 2000s than uppler-echelon shows seen by a fraction of the population did.

That is true.

I know. BABYLON 5 is the entire reason mainstream fictional drama is arc-based and not episodic. It's not because it's the best or anything, but simply because it paved the way. J Michael Straczynski was asked if he felt BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, with its sudden cast changes and progressive story, was aping BABYLON 5. After praising Joss Whedon for a few minutes, he explained that he didn't think, in any way, that Whedon had tried to 'ape' B5 or copy it's style, but rather, because BABYLON 5 had done well, when he pitched BUFFY's style it was easier for executives to swallow. Now... B5 ended in 1997 or so, so it can't be on the list, but the idea that JJ Abrams is, in any way, a good example of 'arc-based' storytelling is absurd.

And where was DEXTER in all this? It's a ****ing awesome show.

BLARG.

I can't really argue with any of the choices because of the list's premise - in some ways the premise kind of points out how impossible and weird it is to try and objectively select the best or most important 'things' of an entire decade.

Funny enough, there was only one explanation of a choice that kind of annoyed me and it was 2 girls 1 cup. If that guy thinks people didn't sexualize the act of eating **** or vomit before the internet then he must be entirely unfamiliar with the Marquis de Sade. There's a reason why fetish communities have become so prevalent on the internet and were so from the moment the internet came into popular use: there have always been people who are into things that others would find bizarre or revolting. There's an obvious danger to this - pedophiles probably shouldn't feel as if their behavior is socially acceptable in any way. But if someone is turned on by something which doesn't do unwanted harm to anyone or anything, no matter how icky whatever that something may be to you, then good for them if they can find a community of like-minded individuals and feel a little less alone. Even people who like to eat ****. Or furries.

Thaaaat being said, 2 girls 1 cup isn't exactly a glorious expression of freedom, since the chances are those woman were degrading themselves horribly for no reason other than money. Which is one of the really bad things about all this.

Though less popular, if I had to cite anything as an example of how thoroughly we've been desensitized by the internet, I would point out the various videos of beheadings, hangings, shootings, and other 'shock' material that's been circulating for years. The fact that people actually seek that kind of stuff out and gladly watch it makes me worry about the human race more than a lot of other things.

Yeah.

I will post my picks, but they won't be objective, by any means.

Then why -apart from the Alias example, which I agree is stupid- are you surprised or pissed at the list? Do you really think Breaking Bad, Rome, or Dexter, as great as they absolutely are, spoke more for the decade's taste and pattern of evolution than 24 did?

I don't believe 24 did anything taste/evolution wise. By that same logic, X-FACTOR was a far greater impact than 24 was. 24 just doesn't count for crap.

When they say 'TV show' though, I think they mean drama. From a 'TV event' or 'TV phenomenon' though, I would certainly agree that X-Factor or other reality stuff like Big Brother have reigned supreme for better or worse, for the last ten years, at least on this side of the Atlantic.

The only glaring problem I have with the lists is Borat.

That's just... NO.

Yeah...I really don't get what they were thinking with that one. Borat was just a so-so Summer comedy movie that everyone wouldn't shut up about for fifteen minutes and promptly forgot about, just like The Hangover.

I could have sworn the decade didn't start until 2011.

That was my initial reaction as well (remember the millenium? The world is retarded...) until I remembered that 'The 1990s' is regarded as a decade beginning in 1990, etc. When examining things like popular culture, it's easier to look at patterns of numbers that way.

I'll do better than Top 5. Here is...

McCheese's Top Ten Movies of the Decade!

Movies ranked by my personal enjoyment, not cultural importance.

1. The Departed
2. There Will Be Blood
3. Thank You For Smoking
4. Snatch
5. High Fidelity
6. The Dark Knight
7. Adaptation
8. Hot Fuzz
9. Casino Royal
10. Gran Torino

I have a way bigger problem with calling the Bourne trilogy the movies of the decade than Borat, even though I wasn't such a fan of that either, because his reasoning is one of the few things on the list that's just subjective "awesomeness!!!!" stuff that has nothing to do with impact, and the bit about how the Bourne movies were finally the first trilogy where every installment is good is bull****, because even if he didn't like them, LOTR was pretty much universally recognized as doing that a few years earlier.

I would chock that up to American ignorance(although Idol still should have qualified).

I think 24's crap too. But it was still one of the shows that dominated the decade, at least over here.
