How would you adapt Baron Zemo for the Ultimate Universe. Personally I would have him lose the baron title in the Ultimate Universe and try something like this:

Colonel (or Oberst in his native Germany) Helmut Zemo was head of Germany's secret anti terrorism unit for many years. In 1980s he helped the West German governemnt fight communist backed terrorist groups and in the 90s he fought Islamic terrorist groups on behalf of the new united German governemnt. His track record was amazing and soon he was named as one of the leading military personal in the field of anti terrorism in all the Western world. In 1999 he was let go of his position for being overzealous, which made him somewhat bitter towards the German government. However in recent times overzealousiness has become less of problem. General Nick Fury hires Colonel Zemo to head his black ops team the Thunderbolts.

Cap doesn't like or trust Zemo, Fury thinks Cap just can't let go of the past, But it is tricky for Cap to disclose the real reason he doesn't like Helmut Zemo, he has had dealt with members of the Zemo family in the past. Near the end of WWII, Cap led a platoon fighting in Western Germany and liberated a death camp there. The death camp was run by a cruel and evil man, General Heinrich Zemo, who liked to prolong the suffering of the prisoners by slowly working them to death. It goes without saying that General Heinrich Zemo was Colonel Helmut Zemo's grandfather. After freeing the prisoners, cap and the platoon killed all of the German personal at the camp. Given his past history, it is unlikely Cap would ever trust a Zemo.

I'd have him as a crazy German scientist that is working with Hydra - perhaps he created the Black Widow super soldier program, or something. When The Thunderbolts go on their first mission, it's to capture this guy and bring him back to SHIELD, where Nick Fury can get him working for America.

I really need to write this as a fanfic.

Hmmm, that would be Helmut Zemo, not Heinrich Zemo correct? Anyway would Hydra be a Neo Nazi Group or someother kind of terrorist group? What I'm asking is Helmut Zemo a neo nazi before he is forced to work for the US governemnt or is he someother kind of terrorist?

I've been thinking for a while that after the defeat of the Chitauri and "Herr Kleiser", it's best to let the Nazi villains take a nap. They really just don't fit in the big picture today. Even Neo-Nazi hate groups, for that matter, as they aren't any real threat these days. I've always liked the Red Skull as a villain, but even in Brubaker's Cap arcs, I find his Nazi entanglements to be a bit dated and tired.

I'm strongly in favor of Ultimate HYDRA, Ultimate Red Skull and even Ultimate Zemo, but the challenge is finding the right ways to inject them into the UU. Rushing the job and just making an Ultimate copy of the 616 characters wouldn't make any sense. Besides, I figure if Cap had fought against guys like Red Skull and Baron Zemo in WWII, we would've already seen a flashback sequence, or at least heard them mentioned.

All that being said, I have absolutely no idea how I'd toss Zemo into the Ultimate mix.

I don't really care about Ultimate Zemo's background as long as he keeps the pink and purple outfit.

But in all seriousness, I'd be settled as long as he doesn't get into the supervillian stuff and would just be one of the boys in the back room of some terrorist organization or another. But a pretty famous one among the antagonists, worthy of even an article in Ultimate Supervillians Monthly.

I'd love for him to kill Bucky. Then in the next volume of Ultimates, it can be revealed that Bucky was not actually killed, instead a clone of Bucky was, just to screw with Cap! Then we discover Bucky is being kept alive and experimented on. Cap finds him and we discover that Bucky has been de-aged and has super hair-growing powers! After escaping, he would take on the name Winter Soldier and join the Ultimates.

I really need to write this as a fanfic.

Well that is why I asked whether ProjectX2's Ultimate Zemo was a Nazi or something else, I was fishing around for an alternative. If we are going to tie Zemo to Hydra we have to define what Hydra is. If neo Nazis are dated what exactly is Hydra then?

Would Hydra be a jihadist organization? I don't think that would work, jihadists do not make for good comic villains. They're very low tech (they live in caves and puilled of their greatest sucess with 19 terrorists with box cutters), they are not type to create secret labs and create an army of super solders or something. How can you give hydra a realstic idealogical goal and keep them as suitible comic book villains?

Also Ultimate Cap fought Arnim Zola in WWII and that wasn't mentioned until Ultimates annual 2, so I don't see why Cap couldn't have fought Heinrich Zemo and not mentioned it. Maybe he doesn't like talking about the war.

If anything, Baron Zemo would be the stereotypical Soviet scientist (woo, 10 points for alliteration!).

Well he's German, rather than Russian, so what would the backstory be, is he East German? If he is East German, wouldn't he be working for the West after 1991? I guess Heinrich Zemo could have been on the Riech's top scientist during the war and after the war the Soviets forced him to work for them. Heinrich lived and worked in the USSR until he died. His son and grandson (Helmut) were also gifted at a talent for science and were isolated so they could devote their life to working for the USSR. After 1991 the Russians cut Helmut's funding. Helmut was angered that Russians were interfering with his life's work and quit to work elsewhere. At that time Hydra hired him and he has been working for ever since.
