This is the first confirmation I've seen that Ares is joining the Avengers - I knew it was speculated, but I hadn't seen confirmation.

"The difference between the two books is that Mighty Avengers is the big, giant, 'world's coming to an end' Avengers," explains Bendis of the new title where power-heavy heroes like the Sentry and Ares join up with what the writer calls "an" Iron Man. "Where New Avengers—as it's been from day one—is dealing with some seedy underbelly thing that's going on in the Marvel Universe. Even the creation of the Avengers was brought together by some seedy, shadowy person who we don't know, and all of that continues. There is a conspiracy going on, a massive one that will be revealed this year."

What won't be revealed anytime soon is the lineup of New Avengers, whose former roster of Bendis favorites from Spider-Man and Wolverine to Luke Cage and Jessica Jones now only draws sharp laughter from the writer. "I'm not sure that they all make it out of Civil War," grins the secretive scribe.

Two cast members Bendis will reveal before the book's first post-Civil War arc are Echo—the David Mack-created character who was last seen posing as new hero Ronin—and a familiar character taking up the Ronin guise. "There is a reason that Echo is Ronin, and we'll find all of this out in issue #27," says Bendis. "At the end of this story, she won't really need to be Ronin, but there will be someone else in the Marvel Universe who is without a costume who fits the bill and kind of sees themselves as a masterless samurai."

And could this character be a certain shield-slinging hero currently on the outs with the government? "We are not commenting on Captain America's existence post-Civil War," says Bendis. "Could Captain America see himself as a masterless samurai? Or maybe it's Tony? Maybe Cap is in the armor? I don't know."

Also looking forward to seeing Echo expanded on - the first story was decent but kind of weak.

He was confirmed in the Wizard preview a few months back. Also, didn't you see the cover to #1 in March (which was also in the preview)?

Nope.

I figured it was already confirmed since this article wasn't hyping the reveal, I'm just saying I hadn't seen it.

I didn't read the mini, is this the same Ares that's been in the Marvel Universe from the early Hercules appearances in Thor or is this a new guy?

The mini was awesomeness defined.

I would assume that this Ares in Mighty Avengers is the same one from the mini. But the mini suggests that that Ares is diferent from the one that's been in the other stories with Hercules and whatnot.

The mini claims that Ares has been in hiding for centuries, living amongst us as a normal human.

Ares = Kratos?

You're basing it off a mythical character created by Sony. And that makes you wrong. So very very wrong.

possible spoilers for upcoming mighty avengers storyline....

It was the script for his first issue as artist of Marvel Comics' Mighty Avengers. Medina told The Continuum on Sunday that he will be following the opening arc by Frank Cho on Mighty Avengers for the next storyline.

"I call them the 'real' Avengers since there's no Wolverine or Spider-Man on the team," Medina said with a smile.

Medina was weened on such Marvel Comics titles as Avengers, having had numerous letters printed before becoming a professional artist. He said that in his initial contract talks with Marvel -- he signed an exclusive after a lengthy run on Spawn -- which characters he was going to work on was a priority.

"Before the money, I wanted to talk about the characters," he said. "And the Avengers were on the top of that list."

After finishing his stint on Sensational Spider-Man, Medina was going to work on a Venom mini-series. In fact, he was 11 pages into it when he got an e-mail from Mighty Avengers writer Brian Michael Bendis.

Originally, Medina was reluctant to take the Avengers gig because he didn't want to drop Venom.

"About two weeks later, then I found out the story," he recalled. "
It was the Avengers vs. an alien invasion -- by the Venoms
."

So instead of one symbiote, Medina is getting to draw dozens apparently.

"I was really excited reading the script on the plane," Medina said. "There's a huge double-page spread when the Avengers are looking out at the city and New Yorkers are being taken over by symbiotes."

Medina, one of the most frequent faces on the convention circuit, will be re-teaming with Bendis on Mighty Avengers. They previously collaborated on a run of Todd McFarlane's Sam and Twitch.

"I requested to work on Sam and Twitch, and Todd was surprised I would want that because I'm such a super-hero guy," Medina said. "But I love that guy (Bendis) so much as a writer. He's such a cool guy and I can't wait to work with him again."

...................... thats wrong
cho is the artist, and the script or whatever sounds like "planet of the symbiotes" that came out in the mid 90's

That is actually kind of interesting. I never read "Planet of the Symboites" or whatever.

I'd much rather see Cho stay on the book though.

I suppose that might also offer a few spoilers as to how the black costume comes back?

It's the origin they used in the cartoon Ultimate Spider-Man. Or U-something, I forget.

Spider-Man Unlimited?

Spider-Man shoots off to Counter-Earth to recue John jameson from Venom and Carnage, who stowed aboard his space launch, only to find the world is run by the Knights of Wundagore and the Green Goblin is a good guy!

Oh yeah, and he lives with some woman and her kid son, gets a job at the newspaper there, and has a costume made up of nanites.

Glad I missed it. Sheesh.
