Did anyone else pick this up yesterday? I got it and it was a very good story. There are no fights, no brawls of any kind, but it is the set-up for the backup stories that will begin to run starting next week in X-Men #200.

Here's part of a review (with spoilers as well) from Newsarama:

When previews of this story first appeared, with its funereal images, everyone made guesses as to the identity of the deceased. It turns out that it's someone we've never met. A faceless boy who once interviewed with Cyclops for a place at the school. And he's met his end not on a mission, not in a crossover, but in a simple, all-too-human traffic accident. The reason that the X-Men are drawn to his funeral is simple: after the Scarlet Witch's decree of "No more mutants", there are precious few mutant lives left. In a medium rife with resurrections and retcons, Mike Carey and the rest of the creative team may have actually found a way to make death matter.

Since essentially the whole of this issue is conversation, there is quite a bit of character-building taking place. Nightcrawler displays his mentor side with members of the New X-Men. Rahne and Rictor wax philosophical. The Beast contemplates how he might go out. Emma Frost deals from her traditional spot of misplaced anger as she and Cyclops telepathically spar over the best way to speak to the father of the dead boy.
And, in one of the best scenes, Cyclops himself has a rare heart-to-heart with Wolverine, flashing a little bit of wit but mainly questioning the place of mutants in the new social order.

The issue again is really good and Scott Eaton did an awesome job penciling it. Colors were magnificent to add.

5/5

Okay, so it looks like the One-Shot didn't catch everybody's discussion, but since I want to discuss the overall implications of the ****ing crazy awesome that's going on in the X-Books with this Massive X-Title Crossover (the first one of its kind in over five years, the first potentially good one is a quite a bit longer)

Chapter One of Endangered Species was released today (well, yesterday) in X-Men #200...

The One-Shot had some heavy implications and left a lot of things to be thought about, but this here is the issue were things really start happening in a way that could potentially change the X-Universe's characters even more than House of M...
The Checklist Page has this to say about this 17-Part Crossover:

"Dr. Hank McCoy searches for a way to reverse the disastrous effects of M-Day, the tragic day that 99% of the mutants on earth lost their mutant gene. But as he draws closer to the answer, what price will he pay for the chance to be a savior?"

The final seven pages illustrate the implications of the quote... The Beast stands before an audience, explaining House of M and the resulting loss of many of the worlds mutants... Explaining it to those who don't remember the alternate reality of it all. How he has been working with the brightest minds within the Hero community, and has found NO way to reverse Wanda Maximoff's actions... He reveals to us that in his desperation he has turned to the darkest men in the Marvel Universe, the Smartest Villains out there, in exchange for information gathered by the X-men over the years. Those on the screens include Four people I dont recognize, one who I'm pretty sure is Stryfe, then MODOK, Mr. Sinister, Dr. Doom, and Mojo.

This is DAMN good stuff... I'm thrilled to be reading all the X-Books right now.

Just one thing that im a little confused about... are the titles interacting, or is the whole Endangered Species bit just the backup material in these titles?

EDIT: *******it, its just backup stuff... That's really disapointing, I have to say... I wanted the main plots to play into it a bit more...

But still it's pretty interesting stuff.

I should be reading this.

But I've given up on X-Men so much. By all accounts I gave up right before things started getting better, so...I'll pick up some ES trades when it's all said and done and see if I should be any non-Ultimate X-Books.

Actually, that's chapter 2. Chapter 1 is the one shot!

But Im going to pick up my comics today, so can't wait to read the back up. Part 3 in Uncanny #488.

Endangered Species is just the prelude to the event, Messiah CompleX. But, all 17 chapters of the Endangered Species back up stories will be collected in trade with the One-Shot.

Wow. I heard heard about Doom appearing, but that last page is just a shocker! I mean, Mojo, MR. SINISTER!, and some others I can't remember now. Wow.

Things will be very interesting for part 3 next week in Uncanny X-Men #488.

Don't give me that crap! I want a synopsis dammit!

Um... *points to my post* I already gave a synopsis of the Endangered Species back-up story...

Here it is again -

 Missed that part...

I'm gonna trade wait this one. It doesn't really seem all that interesting. Especially after house of M and decimation. Mutants are starting to annoy me. Except Astonishing. Good stuff... until Whedon leaves.

God Bless Wikipedia!

The Faces are - Pandemic, MODOK, Kavita Rao, Mojo, Sugar Man, Mister Sinister, High Evolutionary, Arnim Zola, and Doctor Doom

Sugar Man? That's impossible.

Sugar Man was killed by Callisto all the way in Excalibur (right before HoM). :?

Yeah, but wasn't he originally from an alternate timeline? Combine that with Excalibur, which I believe is the X-team to go to for wacky AU hijinx, and it seems likely that this is just another version of him.

I don't remember any 616 Sugar Man. Only one around was the AoA which died.

Right, so there could be a 616 version of him running around, or another timeline/universe version accidentally brought in. Or maybe Beast just used the results of his research, which were probably obtained through painful and unethical methods.

Or it could be a horrible continuity error that will never be explained.

Take your pick.
