...Monopoly.

Ridley Scott's Monopoly.

Based on the best-selling Parker Brothers' game of the same name.

I'm not kidding.

It's old news actually, but I just found out today:
News.Com.Au said:
FILM director Ridley Scott is preparing the most unlikely movie of his career: a feature-length version of the venerable board game Monopoly.

The 69-year-old British film-maker, whose hits include Gladiator and Black Hawk Down, has been offered the pick of young actors to help turn the property game into a comedy thriller.

William Morris, the oldest theatrical agency in Hollywood, has promised Hasbro, which owns Parker Brothers, the manufacturer of Monopoly in the US, that the cream of its stable of 2000 actors will help create a blockbuster movie.
Speaking to the LA Times, Scott says:
LA Times said:
"Monopoly is still the most popular board game -- I might be misquoting! -- in the world. So it's really finding the universe for that game. Because clearly it ought to be humorous and for the family -- the funny way it brings out, particularly when your uncle suddenly gets Park Lane and -- in England, we have Park Lane, Mayfair and Barclay Square, what's it in America? Park and Madison? So you watch people change. You're witness to Jekyll and Hyde. Somewhere in that is a hysterically amusing and I think rather exciting film."
Scott goes on to suggest that focusing on 'our gilded age of greed' is a potential direction.

This is ****ing brilliant.

What's that?

The movie or the game?

The game "Connect Four" is only the second greatest game ever invented.

First place goes to Stratego.

But in all seriousness.....the movie of "Monopoly" sounds brilliant. Like "Wall Street" brilliant.

I've never played those games.

But I think the other board game that needs to be made into a movie... is MAD.

The movie business rags are the ones that are actually making it sound ludicrous... I mean they're talking about sexing up the property so that people will want to run home and play Monopoly after seeing the movie.

But it's Ridley Scott. I don't exactly deify the guy, but he's notoriously argumentative and made a movie in which Roman politics is reduced largely to ESPNing the hell into fame, and gained critical praise for basically making the world's greatest most plot-empty film noir story about a detective who doesn't do any detective work.

He's just weird enough for me to want him to do this movie.

Also, the thimble should make a cameo appearance as a rich guy's keepsake from when his poor mother used to work in the garment factories.

I find the idea of a British-Indian playing an early 20th century old money guy offensive.

No.

Especially because Risk sold out by appearing on Seinfeld and now thinks it's such a Hollywood playa.

  I meant game play wise , Risk is a pretty damn good game

The only thing that unites them is that they are fundamentally wargames.

Otherwise, they have very different rules and mechanics... Stratego plays largely as a game of reconnaissance and misinformation in search of your opponent's flag, and is largely abstract in design while Risk is a straight up conquest game in which combat is used to take over territories.

Neither is fundamentally 'better' than the other. The former has a simpler design but with more nuance, while the latter is pretty much more complex and requires more brute strategy even if there is very little subtlety to it.

. . .AWESOME.

This. . .this is seriously too much awesome for me to handle. And it makes sense! I LOVED the Clue movie with its multiple endings and such.

I am going to see this opening day. And I hope they make a Risk movie, too. Because that would be awesome.

I can't really imagine a Risk movie, but hey I'm open to anything.

I think the Monopoly property is so abstract and open to a myriad of cinematic interpretations. You could be self-serious and just not even make it connected to the game by making it a period film about the olden days of cut throat real-estate, you could make it a Jumanji/Zathura story... or even crazier, you could mix BOTH.

A World War that takes place in the Victorian Age? Where, literally, the entire world is involved? I think it'd be brilliant!

Either way would make for an entertaining movie.

I'm trying to remember, is Stratego the game where your pieces are a certain rank and can only take pieces with ranks lower than them? And then the last ranked piece (I forget the name) can only be defeated by the lowest ranked piece (The Spy, I think)?

Because, if so, I loved that game. I should probably buy it some time.

PLAY WITH THE PAST.

RISK THE PRESENT.
