We have off-topic threads, and social threads but I can never really tell where to post about work, so I figured we should have a thread devote entirely to our day jobs: complaining, telling stories, etc.

Right now, I just found the most awesome order at work today:
Reformulate the story, characters, and settings of a specific film made before 1980 as a contemporary American film, adapting the elements of the original to reflect the changes and differences in social and cultural conditions. Describe and tell the story of your reformulated work.

You may choose from: A Clockwork Orange, Network, Star Wars, 2001: A Space Odyssey or Taxi Driver
I'll make a safe bet and say that the client has never ever visited Ultimate Central.

Well, I could talk about how much teaching is a ***** of a job. Can be really fun, but kids can drive me round the bend. Thank god for my year 10 class who are all WoW addicts...

One time when I was working at a bar some lady put her cigarette out on my hand while I was reaching for her ashtray.

That's funny. Network is an awesome movie. I hate when you ace 5 interviews for the same job and you still have to wait 3 weeks in between each interview. This has been going on since February 2nd.

I'm a research writer, officially speaking.

What that really means is I do homework for students high school and up who are too lazy or strapped for time to do them. Students go to one of those "buy a paper" sites, and the work gets passed down to us. Due to the not-illegal but still frowned upon nature of the work, I'm not really allowed to disclose much about it.

Huh. Yeah. I can see why. That's interesting.

Ourchair, what do you do? Like, what is the purpose of this job?

See above.

I basically write 24/7.

I write for a day job on topics like, "Should the US ban tasers?", "Japanese cinema", "mobile phone security" or "environmental justice".

On free moments, I write on this board.

At night, I work on random freelancing gigs for magazines. Tomorrow, I have to write about a Filipino bass sessionist.

Know what i hate about work? "Employees" who don't ****ing listen to you when you tell them their money is coming. I hate waiting for money, too, but I don't ***** about it two weeks before I know when it's supposed to come.

I'll write your story about a Filipino bass sessionist for twenty bucks.

I don't get paid THAT much.

(Varying economies, so Philippine dollars are pathetic next to the American peso.)

*Raises hand*

Guilty.

But then again, I get my pay deposited straight to my account, and I really really really don't think getting a receipt for my pay is important enough to interrupt me at 10:11am or at 2:37pm while I'm working on orders. Can't they give it out at the end of the day or before lunch?

I know how you feel. I was unemployed for a whole year after graduating.

I graduated college a year and a half ago, and I'm having to rely on self-employment and a pizza delivery side job to make a living.

Does that count?

The thing that sucks is that I'm hired. I'm just waiting for them to give me a start date so I can take my drug test and psych exam. I really wish that meant the tv show.

I HATE IT when students turn in papers they claim are theirs but are so OBVIOUSLY not written in their style.

It's like they either insult my intellegence assuming that I can't tell the difference between what they write in class and what they write at home or insult my profesisonalism by assuming that I don't actually read what they've written.

What really gets me is when a simple Google Search of a suspicious line from their paper sends me to the paper they copied from, I have all of the proof, and they STILL claim they wrote the paper and their parents try and back them up on it.

Makes me crazy.

I know how you feel. What gets me pissed off even more is when they copy from another person in class. Not simple, one answer copying, but I had a case once when taking in an assignment on databases, that four pupils had used ONE pupils set of answers and just changed the name on the paper they handed in. The database queries (which were supposed to be chosen by them, not specifically stated by me) were all identical, and the font they used (which was one of the dumbass ones that kids seem to love so much) was identical. I mean, if you are gonna cheat, do it imaginatively, and make it a challenge for me to spot. If they are gonna make it that easy, they will get what they did get. Finishing it all throughout their lunchbreak.

I just don't understand it. First, these guys aren't really employees. They're independent contractors. Which means, technically, it can be up to 90 days before they get paid. However, they way my company works is it takes 30 or so days for the first check to come in, and then it's weekly after that. Occasionally there is a hiccup (For example, it might take two weeks to get a paycheck), but then it gets caught up so you'd get two checks at once. It's never longer than that.

I drill it into these guys' heads when I hire them that they aren't employees, they're contractors and I spell out in painful detail how the money situation works. And I STILL get calls after two weeks with people screaming for their money. It ****ing irritates the hell out of me, and i have very little patience for such people.

That. Is. Awesome.
