But didn't the average movie watcher not know who most of them were in regards to X-men 1 ? That worked.

If trailer looks cool and film introduces characters like 1 did it'll work. Look at that watchmen film they are making, Do average movie watchers know them? Or how about Punisher? he got a film that was successful.

By that logic every movie should fail as no one knows who the characters are untill they actually watch it. So X-men movie fans + People who like Trailer = Should make a big profit.

I still think name recognition accounts for a lot. Many people of our generation, no matter their tastes or gender, probably at least know of Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, etc, due to the X-Men animated show from the early 90's. Of course comic fans will be more familiar and interested, but casual movie-goers won't go see something just because a trailer looked cool (see Jumper). There are just as many instances of THAT as there are successful comic movies like the ones you named.

As for Watchmen, its getting a HUGE marketing push from WB and is based on THE BEST GRAPHIC NOVEL OF ALL TIME!

Punisher wasn't huge at the box office, but is still a known entity among even non-comic fans.

Layla Miller, Surge, Hellion, Dust, etc are none of those things. That was my point.

Still a comic than non-comic people will not recognise. Plus Fox will advertise the crap out of the new X-men film, why wouldn't they? They did for X-men 1-3 and Fantastic four 1 and 2 I think it's a safe bet they will for this.


So the not knowing is still not a factor. Hell how many non-comic people had heard of V for Vendetta before this film? Very little yet people still went and saw it, (I personally loved it then got the comic because of it) A new X-men film will sell even if it's a horrible moie I bet a lot still go to see it first week.

But if its labeled as the "X-Men", people will want to see the X-Men they know. Watchmen isn't the X-Men, hence people aren't going into it with expectations of seeing Wolverine or Cyclops. Many would be with a movie titled "X-Men: First Class".

I'm still unsure if First Class will be an origin story with Cyclops, Jean, etc, or feature all new characters. I've been reading online that it seems like certain people interested in making it are pushing for the new character approach.

As soon as kids realize the characters they know aren't in it, they won't be interested. This applies to adults as well. Sure, some people would see it, and opening numbers might be respectable, but I guarantee a HUGE drop-off in the second to third weeks. It just won't hold up. The upcoming Wolverine probably won't have this problem, since its all about the most well known mutant character ever. And the other mutants in that movie (Gambit, Deadpool, etc) are fan favorites, so are an added bonus to fans. BUT, you couldn't make a film and expect big numbers when its based on characters that are even less known than the supporting characters in an X-Men spin-off film! The Magneto film might be iffy...he's well known, but I'm not sure if a general audience really cares about the character outside of his role as an X-Men villain (see Hannibal). And as for First Class...I've said all I need to.

Not true. Look at other stuff, Star trek the next generation , Batman Beyond and more. As long as people know from trailers it the next group or something it will not be an issue.

At least that's how I how I see it, but I guess we won't agree on this.

If First Class ends up happening, we'll see all we need to. If I end up being wrong, I'll state as such.

There is no right or wrong on this as if it succeeds like I think doesn't mean it couldn't of easily bombed. And vies-versa.



Though I will add this : If it is a sequel set after X-men III I want to see Bobby ,Rouge, Kitty and maybe Pyro (if they explain how and why) be the teachers of this generation like Wolverine & pals, were last time to them. Kinda full circle there story.

Well, there is a right or wrong as far as our points are concerned. I'm saying First Class won't have a strong box office showing because its characters are less well known than the "regular" X-Men. You're saying that won't really affect it. If it takes in big numbers, I'll be wrong and you'll be right. If it tanks, vice versa.

:lol: I'll admit if it's not got wolverine I might not enjoy it as much (He is my favourite X-man)

20th Century Fox has hired "Gossip Girl" creator Josh Schwartz to write X-Men: First Class. He'd also been offered a chance to direct the film, but declined.

Schwartz, the creator and executive producer of The CW's hit as well as Fox's "The O.C." and NBC's "Chuck," is expected to inject a next-gen sensibility into the superhero series.

Sadly, I think there's a lot of truth to that. As I said, he's easily the most well-known X-Men character, and one of the most recognizable in the entire Marvel universe. While that might mean less to some fans, it means a lot to kids who'd drag their parents to see it, but might not if Wolverine isn't in it. He's the cool one with claws, after all.

Studio execs want to make money. If putting Wolverine in it makes them more money (which to be fair, it most probably will), they'll pay Jackman the money he wants to come back.

I'm honestly wondering how they're going to approach it. I keep hearing conflicting reports. Some say it will be an "early years" story of the X-Men, featuring a young Cyclops, Iceman, etc. Others say it'll feature all new mutants/characters and maybe feature a supporting role for an original X-Men character (to anchor it to the other movies).

Life & Style magazine is reporting that on December 20, 2008 Paris Hilton, George Clooney and director Ridley Scott were all seen sitting together with Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel and Brittany Flickinger, the winner of Paris' BFF reality show at Hollywood hot spot Dan Tana's.

No word on what all these people were doing together, it could have been something as simple as just having a meal among friends, but of course the rumors have started to fly. Could this have been a meeting discussing parts for the upcoming Avengers movie????? Only time will tell

She can play the girl in the deleted scene that gets shot. Or the girl who gets landed on by Kang's ship.

The possibilities are endless. Cap's shield? Ooops, it just happened to go a bit too far... :p

I think if they were going to do another one, you would have heard something. It's been a while since the second one and those films usually come pretty quick, one after the next. I kind of think they're going to close the book on that one. It's too bad. I had a fun time making them."

As someone who really likes Chris Evans, I'm really glad to see that he's not one of those obnoxious actors who washes his hands clean of the comic book movie... *cough*Ben Affleck*cough*

I hope the Fantastic Four films stay dead until they actually get someone smart to direct them, not some twit who directed Barbershop, and a producer with the balls to make them fantastic.
