For those that don't know, Bendis and Maleev have been working on a Spider-Woman series for the last few years and it looks like it's finally coming out soon. Marvel have done a few motion comics for it. I'm not sure if they're original or scenes from the comics yet but I decided to watch the first one since it's free on Marvel.com at the moment.

People seem to be pretty split on it - some say it's great and motion comics are cool and the rest think it's terrible and don't understand the point of this "format." I am in the latter because what I just watched was pretty awful.

Bendis's dialogue is normally pretty poor when read but it sounds dreadful when listened to. The voice acting was strange and off-putting. I didn't even know Jessica Drew was supposed to be British? The only positive thing I can think of is that it looked good - but that's because Maleev is a great artist and I'm going to get plenty of Maleev art in the actual comic. I still don't understand the motion comic thing so I think I'm going to stick to the proper thing.

I was initially excited for this comic back when it was announced after Daredevil (how many years ago was that?!) and Jessica Drew was going to be dealing with SHIELD and HYDRA but now after all these delays and story changes (now she's working for SWORD and hunting aliens on earth), I'm just not so sure anymore.

Are you guys looking forward to the comic? Did you like the motion comic? What do you think?

yeah, she is. They just don't refer to it very often and you can't hear accents in comic word balloons. I think her origin story mentions her living in Britain after Wundagore, but i don't remember the details.

EDIT: Oh, i got it the wrong way round, she was born in England, then went to Wundagore with her parents

wikipedia said:
Jessica Miriam Drew, daughter of Jonathan and Merriam Drew, was born in London, England. At a young age, Jessica was lethally poisoned by radiation while living near Mount Wundagore in Transia. In an attempt to save her life, her father injected her with an experimental serum based on irradiated spiders' blood.

I thought the motion comic was really good and it actually made me more excited for the comic, even though I can't believe it will be so good that it took however many months/years it's been to develop.

The British accent thing threw me too. I had no idea she was British.

The writing in the first motion comic was kind of weak and pretty predictable, but I was glad it wasn't typical Bendis bad. And the art was so great it made up for the deficiencies in writing.

mmm...I'm with Project X2 on this. I usually don't mind Bendis' dialogue, but it really sounded awful outloud (and maybe just in this context)

The voice acting just didn't sound natural. It sounded like someone reading a script (except for Spider-skrull).

That said, I love Maleev's art and the overall concept was pretty cool. it will be interesting to see where this goes.

Eh. It's not a "motion comic". It's just low budget animation. The art wasn't bad. I could see it fitting on MTV's old Liquid Television or an Adult Swim production. But, the art was kind of washed. I think they need to bring in a brighter colorist, and the lack of facial movement is a little disconcerting.. The dialogue sounded like a dub for a Japanese cartoon. Regardless, the content of it bored me. It just wasn't very good.

But it's not a comic. It's not the next iteration of the comic book format. In fact, the format cleaves most of the positive artistic qualities of comics: layout, reader-defined pacing, the capacity to internally vocalize the characters. I could see a good creative team eventually doing something interesting with the format though.

The dialogue sounded even more retarded read out loud than it does in a normal Bendis comic.

And the animation isn't significantly better than The Maxx was when it did the same thing 15 years ago.

Plus it's like a total Men in Black ripoff. Marvel already owns the rights to Men in Black, they don't need to rip them off.

Ok, first of all, The Maxx was way better than this.

Secondly, you're absolutely right about Bendis' writing.

Read the first issue...I thought it was good. Of course the dialogue was bad, but I didn't think it totally killed the story. The art is fantastic.

Also, it's on Hulu now, which is like Marvel saying "**** you" to the people who paid for it.

Bunch of suckers, dealing with Marvel's insane business practices.

I watched it when Marvel put it on their own site. I would be angry if I paid for it.

#2 was better than #1 though not much has happened. Viper just rescued Spider-Woman by killing a bunch of cops in her flying gun car thing.

Maleev is fantastic.

I'm really loving this book. This is Bendis at his almost-best...the dialogue/monologues aren't very good but the narration is fantastic. And the art...wow.

The whole thing just reads so beautifully. It's not a perfect book but it's got all the right pieces.

Wait. The comic is the same story that they already released as a motion comic just dragged out for 5 months in print?

Lame.
