Not only do we have a solicitation that doesn't tell us anything, we have an interview that barely tells us more - EXCLUSIVE: Brian Bendis Reveals Marvel's 'Ultimate Enemy'

"A new enemy brings forth a big mystery, and certain pinpoints of the Marvel universe are attacked by some grandiose villainy," explained Bendis of the story that will unfold in three, four-issue miniseries that combine to form the "Ultimate Enemy" event.

According to the writer, the three stories will be titled "Ultimate Enemy," "Ultimate Mystery," and finally, "Ultimate Doom."

Whether the title of that last miniseries reveals anything about one of its chief villains remains to be seen, but Bendis did reveal some of the major players in the series—specifically, "the whole cast of Spider-Man, what's left of the Fantastic Four, Nick Fury and all kinds of other characters."

Bendis compared the "Ultimate Enemy" event to the 2004-2006 "Ultimate Galactus" event written by Warren Ellis, which introduced Marvel's most famous planet-eater to the Ultimate Universe.

... Gee, I wonder who it can be.

Though this does sound interesting, for a second I got a sudden flash to a time when the UU was awesome and we would all be coming up with detailed theories and now I made myself sad.

Wow! Characters from the Ultimate Universe face ENEMIES! Over the course of four miniseries! Written by Bendis!

I. can't. wait. It sounds like a mystery of LOEB PROPORTIONS!

(Seriously. I swear to god. Not only do comic book writers have no understanding of what the term "noir" means, but half of them don't understand the word "mystery" either)

Also, boobs aside, do all the characters on the solicit cover look 11 years old to anyone else?

My guess? Bendis is going to introduce a female Doom rip off (aka, Johnny and Sue's mom) who's going to use Atlantean technology to "take over the world" (so original). Sadly, it took me 4 seconds to come up with that, and even sadder, I bet thats what this ends up being.

*sigh*

Yes, except for Sue. With those hips she definitly doesn't look 11--Bom-chicka-wow-wow!

As the man who created it, I guess it should fall to Bendis to pound the last nails into Ultimate's coffin. .... This story sounds really, really boring. A mysterious villain shows up and all the heroes have to rush through a series of miniseries to battle him? Wow, sounds like every boring crossover I've read in the past 30 years. You know what made Ultimate Spider-man great? Focusing on tight, character-driven stories that took place in a real-world environment. Not a bunch of idiots all screaming pithy lines as they battle some off-panel ultimate-evil. Bring back the characters and put an end to this "huge team-ups with multiple miniseries and villains you don't see until the end" garbage. Sheesh. I miss the days when Bendis was only writing 3 books a month.

This is from the comment on the link. Quoted for truth.

Also, when Ultimate Nightmare started, from the first page I knew it was setting up Ultimate Galactus. Everyone did. And they not only hadn't announced the titles of the successive minis, but they hadn't announced that it was part of a trilogy, if I recall correctly. And here, not only before the first issue's out do we have all three titles, but one of them is "Doom".

Right, this is why it's stupid to announce it as "Doom": Everyone will now expect Doctor Doom to be the bad guy since he is, quite clearly the most disappointing ultimization they ever did. Ignoring Ellis' arc which, despite being immensely entertaining, redid Doom with goat legs and as a king of homeless squatters, and the stories prior to UF4 #1 which had Doom set up as a shadowy king of Latveria, Doom never did a damn thing, was never cool, and then died stupidly. He was a haphazard mistake. So now, the idea is that people will want to see a proper, full-on Ultimate Dr Doom that is awesome. If the series is called "Doom" as a red herring, it will be disappointing. There is simply no way it can be called "Doom" without it being a clear and present hint that Doom is the big bad. But then why not own up to it? To be coy! Well, if you want to preserve a mystery don't give away your gorram ending. Announcing the third mini as "Doom" and then pretending there's a mystery is counterintuitive. Either it's not Doom and it's just a disappointing tease, or it is Doom and it's not a mystery.

That's right, from the bloody marketing, I'm demonstrating conceptual flaws in the series. And I never had to go the route of "Bendis has tried to do long-reaching, slow-burning story arcs and has never succeeded" to point out this will be nothing but disappointment for everyone.

I dunno why we even bother putting up these "news" things anymore.

We should talk about TINTIN instead. It's awesome.

Ultimate Galactus wasn't intended as a trilogy at the beginning. Ultimate Nightmare was supposed to be a lead-in into something big Millar was supposed to write, but Millar got sick and Ellis was proposed to make a trilogy instead.

Most people I've heard discuss about this are expecting Reed to become the new Doom after Ultimatum, loosing his "family of four", his girlfriend and his best friend because of his own actions. Nearly no one is expecting Doom to come back.

There's is the boy adventurer, called Tintin.

Which is what I'm assuming Bass is talking about.

I am. What the hell is wrong with kids today?

Sad to hear Millar got sick. I'm curious, how much of Nightmare was done, how far along was it, before the change?

Reed became Dr Doom in EARTH X. It's an old stand by. When I say "Doom coming back", I don't mean Victor Van Damme, because he was rubbish. What I mean is that by calling it "Ultimate Doom", everyone is going to expect there to be a proper, ultimized, Doctor Doom at the end of it. And I don't think it can work because they either bring back Dr Douche or make "Dr Doom" a title someone else will wear and he won't feel like "the real Doom".

Normally, I'd say "could be wrong though", but considering Marvel's track record of "events" in the last five years, I don't think I need to.

For this being an event, they didn't even announce it beforehand. They're just like, "Oh yeah, there's this. So anyways..."

It's Bendis baby, actually. He pitched it, he gained the approval, and now he's writing it. Two weeks ago he didn't even have an artist on it I think.

It would be interesting - though not necessarily good - if they set it up so that the UU is what leads into what has become Earth X (which is not 616 canon). The chain of events in the UU obviously wouldn't let it work itself out that way but if it were anyone but the people who are authoring the UU right now doing it it might possibly be something I would consider thinking about downloading and maybe reading.

I really hope not. It just seems far too out of character for Ultimate Reed, even considering losing Sue, Ben, and Johnny. Besides the fact its been done before...

This is going to be a huge waste of time.

I'm actually looking forward to this. I like where Ultimate Spider-Man is now, and this looks like more of the same.

I sometimes wonder why the human race keeps producing these ne'er do wells.
there are so many ne'er do wells in the world now that they inevitably meet and breed, producing more ne'er do wells. The world is stuck in a vicious cycle of Ne'er do well breeding.

HE IS NOT A BOY ADVENTURER, HE IS A BELGIAN JOURNALIST AND CAPTAIN HADDOCK IS AWESOME AND SHUT UP.

I wonder if you had to spend at least a few years of your childhood living in Britain to appreciate Tintin. I started to get into Spider-Man when I was a kid, but then my family moved to England and all I could find was Tintin and Asterix. I'm sure Spider-Man and Marvel were around, but they weren't nearly as popular.

I'm guessing Bendis will use his Roxxon subplot that he built in USM for the last few arcs in this event. We should probably learn of what happened to Beetle and Eddie Brock. So Latveria should be involved anyways.

I'm calling it now, Doom will be carnage
