X-Men: Destiny

Damn, I can't read about it at work. I hate waiting until I get home.

With New York Comic-Con officially upon us, the announcements have begun. Among the first is that Activision is teaming with Silicon Knights for a brand new X-Men game called X-Men: Destiny. No platforms and no genres were announced in Activision's statement about the title.

"The all-new original video game casts players as new mutant recruits in a rich, branching storyline that features a deep element of choice and gives players ultimate control of their destiny," the vague release said.

What else is known about this game? Well, not much, but we do have this sweet trailer.

I'd like to see something with the depth of Mass Effect too. I liked X-Men: Legends okay, but they got pretty old quick.

This is being developed by Silicon Knights, who also did Too Human (uh-oh!).

Thanks, Nigma.

I'm hoping this is more Mass Effect than Marvel's answer to DCUO.
I doubt that it's their answer to DCUO. I believe their own MMORPG was rumored to be back on track. But their own Mass Effect would be interesting...

Yes, but they also made Eternal Darkness. So 50/50.

I was thinking Mass Effect when I saw this and hope I was right.

I feel like such a terrible, terrible nerd for saying this, but I don't think that's a good metaphor. X-Men is a fairly black and white setting, with X-Men being good and the Brotherhood being evil. There's a couple gray areas, but that's the general way of things. Mass Effect is a pretty gray setting; you're invariably fighting evil abominations from beyond the stars, but it's up to you how you go about it and the galaxy gets saved whether you're a Paragon or a Renegade.

KOTOR might fit better.

OK, rant over. Back to your regular thread.

you're invariably fighting evil abominations from killer robots to hate groups, but it's up to you how you go about it and mutantkind gets saved whether you're a Paragon or a Renegade.

Pretty much sounds like some of the better X-Men stories in the past. I mean, don't forget, this is a group of people that allow known killers (Wolverine, X-23, Cable, Deadpool, Emma Frost, Archangel, Fantomex, etc) to work with and at times, lead them.

Exactly. And we know nothing about the game yet. The trailer suggests you might be making a new character. Might you have to make decisions that reflect either Magneto or Xavier's philosophy, or the sort of practical survival choices that have been at the forefront of the past couple years of X-books?

It's been said from the little that was mentioned with the teaser trailer that you will play as a new mutant character. From that it seems to be that the other X-Men characters could likely be NPC's.

We'll know tomorrow morning since the panel for the game will be at 10:45 a.m.

I'm hopping for KOTOR style game with x-men.

I hope it's a remake of Marvel Brothel.

Some more details.

The tone of the game is said to be "dark, mature, & intense" striving towards an adult feel, but a Mature rating is said to not be likely.
San Francisco is divided into human & non-human sectors as Professor X is dead.
The game starts with a peace rally being staged to pay tribute to Professor X, which is when you are prompted to pick one of three characters in the crowd.
OXM's Activision guide chose Adrian Luca as their character.
The game presents the player with frozen in time "decision moments", indicating its time for players to make a big choice. The first big choice in the game allows you to pick your power archetype ranging from being able to manipulate matter and your body mass, energy projection, or a third one that was kept a secret.
The game allows you to decide who is friend or foe in the X-Men universe.
Cyclops, Quicksilver, Surge, Magneto, Nightcrawler, Wolverine, & Gambit are confirmed to make an appearance in the title, with plenty more to be announced.
X-Genes play a rather large role in the game, ranging from boss fights to deciding to give it to an X-Men, or someone else to form another alliance.
Linking together a good amount of attacks will fill up your "Mutant power" meter, allowing you to pull off even stronger special attacks.
One of the special attacks described as a part of the "Mutant power" meter was "Force Pillars". The attack was said to produce crowd clearing beams that rise from the ground.

This sounds more and more like a Bioware game.

I hope it's a remake of Marvel Brothel.

That would be fun.
