Oh yeah! It's been a while since I've played it.

My best bet would be that, in the same way ME2 was about getting together a crew to strike at the Collectors and protect Earth, ME3 will be about building an alliance of the various races to protect Earth from a full assault.

But that's just a guess.
 
Actually, it looks like we were pretty close.

Earlier today, ME3 showed up in the EA store, with the following plot summary:

Earth is burning. Striking from beyond known space, a race of terrifying machines have begun their destruction of the human race. As Commander Shepard, an Alliance Marine, your only hope for saving mankind is to rally the civilizations of the galaxy and launch one final mission to take back the Earth.

It was quickly taken down.

It looks pretty certain that this is ME3 we're anticipating, though I think we should avoid making a thread until we're 100% sure.

I'd definitely say no. The first game exhaustively sets up the very complicated world of the series, its government, species, the hard sci-fi behind everything, etc, as well as loads of characters. The character you make and develop throughout the first game is carried over into the second through stored data on your system, as well as the choices you made which significantly affected the plot and relationships. It's very much a direct sequel.

Also, Mass Effect is pretty widely recognized as one of the greatest and most memorable games of all time. There's no reason to skip it. It's practically still new.

Yeah, it's pretty ****ed up and mean the way they're handling this. If your PC can run ME1, I'd definitely recommend trying to get it for that first and then manually re-entering your decisions when you set up the second one for PS3. They're really trying to play up the motion comic catch-up stuff as being just as good somehow now that they're cashing in with PS3, but it's like when people start watching LOST a season or two in because they "caught the recap episode". They can follow the plot enough to get by okay, but holy **** think of all they've missed. There's such an emphasis on character and relationships in the game that I can't imagine it living up.

I'd imagine you'd be just fine jumping into the PS3 version of the game. You miss a bunch of stuff, but it's not all that complex a story and you can catch up pretty easy. The thing that sucked about the 360 version is unless you imported a character, you couldn't make any choices about your character's decisions during the events of the prior game. But if the PS3 version remedies that, you should be fine.

This would probably keep me from playing the game. If I felt at all like I'm missing out on a game from not having played the previous installment, I couldn't do it. That's why I was so mad at myself for watching season 3 of Sons of Anarchy. Now I get my queue up from Netflix and watch the first two seasons.

See, I'm the opposite. I've got no problem with jumping into a story that's already halfway over.

Except for those choices actually having weight and meaning behind them from the first one.

I don't mean to be a buzzkill 'cause you obviously really wanna play the games, Proj, and I think they're pretty much made for you, and depending on whether your approach to a story is usually more like J.Agamemnon's or Zombipanda's you may get by all right. Just make no mistake - it's not how the games were meant to be experienced any more than TV shows with "recap" episodes are. Think it over.

Think what over? It's the only choice we PS3 users have.

At least we get the motion comic, it's better than nothing.

It be great if we got the first one, but we won't. So we'll have to make do.
 
It's a no brainer as far as I am concerned. I didn't think this would ever come to the PS3 and now that I know it is, I'm definitely on board. It was such a great game to play while

. I wish that Dragon Age would have been more like it. Supposedly the second will be a lot closer. I don't know if I am sold on DA2 yet, as the combat in 1 was off. I digress, though. I played the first game and can't wait to get into the second.
 
I'm definitely one of those people that wants to experience the complete story. I just don't understand why they aren't releasing the first Mass Effect as well. Surely a definitive edition should come with both games?

Like I said, I'll probably check it out and while I'm sure I'll be missing something, I hope I will still enjoy it.

I think it had something to do with BioWare making a deal with Microsoft to only release it for 360 and later PC, which they got out of for the second game. Microsoft still won't let them do the first one now. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony reaches some sort of arrangement with them so it can be a downloadable or part of a bundle or something when the third game is released, given that you could fit the first and second onto the same disc.

BioWare've also said now that the later-released PS3 version of ME2 is the more advanced one because it uses the prototype ME3 engine. Basically, they've been disloyal and screwed over pretty much everybody, but I'll still buy each game because they're just about as good as it gets.

Microsoft owns the distribution rights for the first game. That's pretty much why we can't have the first one.
