New details have surfaced from yesterday's reports that Nintendo is set to unveil its newest console, codenamed "Project Cafe."

According to our sources, the new Nintendo controller will feature dual analog sticks in addition to standard d-pad and trigger buttons. It'll mirror a Gamecube controller in general function but not in specific form.

Update: Sources now confirm to IGN the new Nintendo controller allows players to stream entire games to the device from the console, saying it's like a miniature television. The screen size on the controller is also confirmed to be six inches in size.

Ok the pad sounds just awesome. I want one.

Re: Wii 2 aka Project Cafe

So the new controller is in essence what would happen if a GameBoy got impregnated by a Gamecube controller? Is that a fair guess?

No

It's what if a DS got impregnated by a cube pad. As it's touch screen lol

Re: Wii 2 aka Project Cafe

Game Informer first reported the details, saying the console is capable of running games at "HD resolutions." Our sources have said the the console is significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and that Nintendo's intent is to recapture the hardcore market. Another source said it is capable of 1080p resolutions.

:D I want one!

Re: Wii 2 aka Project Cafe

Yet they still won't have a 3D Pokemon game.

Re: Wii 2 aka Project Cafe

I'm sure this will be good, but I'm pretty disappointed it doesn't feature the 3DS-technology built into VR googles and use some combination of gloves, props or pure motion for the "controller". This feels like a half-step forward at best. They could be doing so much more at this point.

I would never buy anything that required me to wear VR Googles and Gloves.

Re: Wii 2 aka Project Cafe

Ah, I see. That does make much more sense.

Heres a break down of what is in it.

A summary of what they've got:
# The controller will have a built-in high-resolution screen that's six inches big and will be a bit like an Ipad but with buttons
# Controller will also have a front-facing camera, D-Pad, two bumpers, two triggers and "possibly" more
# The controller alledgedly can be used as a Wii sensor bar
# The console will have a custom IBM PowerPC CPU with three cores
# The GPU will be AMD/ATI R700 family with a shader unit at version 4.1
# There will be at least 512MB RAM
# Project Cafe will be backwards compatible with the Wii (including peripherals) and Gamecube games

from http://www.fragland.net/news/Wii-2-tech-specs-leaked/25752/

Camera + Touch screen + Wii sensor bar capability = It's like they have taken everything that worked on wii , gamecube , DS (nd dsi) and combined them together to make what wounds like a great console

But at the same time are fixing what people complained about last time (and not just wii). A real pad not just motion (i know some used cube ect.. but was a complaint) , No hd , backwards compatible (360+ps3 complaint) and more which is shocking.

What I hope :

Internet that has no more friends codes
a big hard drive at least 80gb in size
A big store like PSN but with VC games. Possibly even download Wii and game cube games.
Disc = bluray. They can get the rights of Panasonic ect... like pcs ect.. so why not?

Re: Wii 2 aka Project Cafe

this is ign's concept of what the pad could look like :

In general I would say that since people have proven they will spend hundreds of dollars filling their rooms with life-sized plastic band equipment to play a single game series, you will eventually have to either stop playing new videogames or adapt. But even so, I do mean "feature" and not "require" at this point. You don't need to get up and swing the Wiimote for every game on the system, but having that for some games was a big step forward.

Anyway, why would you never buy a system like that?

Re: Wii 2 aka Project Cafe

Because it doesn't interest me at all? And I think my era of video games is done. Nothing has intrigued me since Fallout 3. Most of the new games people rave about I couldn't give two ****s about.

Plus, I remember the first time VR googles and gloves came out. It was lame.

If it's more about the games themselves not interesting you than the idea of more advanced interfaces, what does any of it matter either way?

Re: Wii 2 aka Project Cafe

For the time being, I am skeptical. Someone at IGN made a good point about the controller costs and how the controller itself would need it's own processor if it's going to double as a DS as some are speculating. In either case, it probably would need it's own processor just for the screen itself. If this thing is going to use batteries, count me out. PS3 has me spoiled with the rechargeable USB controllers which seems a much more viable and cost feasible option. All-in-all, from just what we've seen and heard, the controller alone could cost around $80. PS3/360 controllers cost around $50-$60 and have yet to decline in price. Wiimotes cost around $30-$40(?), up from the $25 starting cost.

I'm reserving overall judgement until we get more concrete info at E3.

My two biggest wishes out of all this;

1. Controllers don't use batteries, instead use USB chargers
2. 1080p HD resolution.

Without those two requirements, count me out.

Re: Wii 2 aka Project Cafe

That's my biggest thought. A touch screen controller that's six inches with all these other things on it as well? This thing is going to be the size of my lap if that's all true. And I have gorilla hands!

Now, if it's just a touch screen, then I'd have to worry about how easy it would be to break the controller.

I need some concrete info here, but like I told Planet-Man, not many video games have me excited these days.

With the cost, processor and size. I say don't worry. All 3 of the technologies exist in mobile phones. My phone's screen is around 6 inches and it fits perfectly in my hand with room. Plus same phone has camera in it, like pad is rumoured too and more.

Plus I think it'll be around like IGN's concept picture. Of a controller with screen on top. As for cost and processor. processor is in phones and DS. Look at DS lite. now it's only like £60 to £70.

360 and ps3 pads are around £40 each. DS Lite and original are only £70 so I think price of pads will be somewhere between £40 and £70 which I'd pay to get an extra pad or 2.

Now J. Agamemnon mentioned battery. Ign and few sites have rumoured it'll use a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery. The same type of battery seen in mobile phones and I believe ps3 pads uses it too. So that could be a great step forward.

yeah...I don't know how cell phone plans work in UK, but if they're anything like US plans, you get the phone at a severe discount depending on what plan you choose. if you bought the phone as is, with no plan, you would essentially be paying $300 - $600. And I'm not to keen on the controller scheme. It's pretty fugly to say the least. I love the concept, like when I used to play Crystal Chronicles with my gamboy advance on the gamecube, it would function as a controller. That's kinda where I see the usefullness. But look how the screen sticks out, one drop on the floor and it's over.

well yeah, but that's how technology is. 720p tv's run for about $300 now. Look back 5 years ago, and they cost as much as the new 1080p hdtv's

I would have no problem with this, but I honestly don't see that being the case. The production costs alone would be significantly more than production cost for ps3/360 controllers.

Yes, and yes. This should be the new norm and hope it's true.

Re: Wii 2 aka Project Cafe

Unless Nintendo stops messing with the third party companies/programmers, I don't see me buying one. Heck, my Wii hasn't been powered on for about 4 months now, there's just nothing compelling about Nintendo anymore.

But, just my opinion.
