Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. discussion (spoilers)

Wow. You bicker like Ray Romano's parents on Everybody Loves Raymond.

Wyokid was saying he was hoping Fury would stick around on the show for a season or two, but he probably didn't stick around because they have plans for him in the MCU movies so he can't be an ongoing character on the show.

DIB was saying that he wouldn't be on the show for a season or two because he's a movie star and he wouldn't get paid nearly as much on a TV series, so even if they don't have plans for him in the MCU movies he wouldn't stick around to act in a TV show.

So Wyokid, DIB is disagreeing with THE REASON Jackson isn't sticking around to be on the show. They can't afford him.

Now kiss and make up.

In other news, I love Coulson. And I loved all the scenes he and Fury had together.

I want to see what happened to Fitz. I'm glad he manned up and confessed his love.

I also want to see if Ward comes back as a villain or maybe a reluctant ally. (She nail gunned his foot to the ground. Wow.)

That Wyokid/DIB discussion was more fascinating than this entire show.

And then I said I'm confused on how that's not clear.

That was clear, and quite obvious given Jackson's contract for the films. My point is it's naive and unrealistic to hope he'd stick around for Season 2. Yes, he may appear in a cameo or two like he did this season, but certainly not on anything approaching a regular basis.

As the great film Grumpy Old Men once said: "You can wish in one hand and crap in the other, and see which one gets full first."

We do, but we have way more sex than those old folks.

They're obviously going to have some redemption angle for Ward in Season 2, which I wish they wouldn't do. He was far more interesting as a villain, plus him redeeming himself reeks of a lack of conviction and personality for the character. Unfortunately the producers have hinted they will redeem him in Season 2 in interviews.

It also contained 100% more nudity.

I don't think it's that unrealistic considering the dude is doing credit card commercials and had been basically begging to be on the show.

Movie stars have been doing commercials for a long time, both in the US and other countries. It doesn't mean they're going to trade the massive paychecks they get from doing a few month shoot in a feature film to a substantially more meager paycheck a network TV show offers. It makes sense considering they get a huge paycheck to appear in those commercials for what amounts to a few hours work.

And when did he beg to be on the show? I'm sure he was open to making the cameo appearances because he's a team player and obviously enjoys playing the Fury character, but again, he's not going to make a season long commitment to any TV show, even one that features him playing a character he enjoys, nor even regularly appearing in said TV show.

You do make some insane extrapolations, don't you?

Him comparing himself to Charlie from Charlie's Angels is your proof he wanted to be on the show?

Like I said, I'm sure he was open to making a couple cameos, but I guarantee he didn't want to be a regular cast member on the show. I'm also sure him appearing was more an inconvenience for him, but he did it without complaining because he's a team player.

But yeah, he even says just them using his voice would be good enough for him...seems to indicate he'd rather have just had his voice on the show, to me, since recording lines in a sound booth is even less work than a day or two on the AoS set filming scenes. Learn to read between the lines, man.

Season one comes out on DVD & BluRay on Sept 9 (the same day as Captain America: The Winter Soldier)

Season 2 is going to be more low tech than the first season, with the agents rebuilding SHIELD and not having as many fancy toys to play with.

I found this quote by Clark Gregg interesting and encouraging:
I thought there were so many things stacked against us last year, and one of them was where the ABC television schedule would put us on for three episodes and then take us down for four weeks. Nobody could get a momentum going and when the show started to be on consistently and having story that carried over in an episodic way, that's when things started to click. So the great thing about the announcement was, A., we're moving to 9pm, where it can be a little darker, like I think Marvel needs to be. Then they're going to show, I believe it's ten ['Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' episodes], eight of ['Agent Carter'], then twelve [more 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' episodes]… For the most part, this is straight runs of our show, which is when I think it really works.

I'm suffering through this. It's taken me all this time to get to the last 4 episodes. It's really bad.

The one redeeming episode has been the last one with Patton Oswalt, where Ward kills him and takes off with Skye. I don't know what the title is, but it's something like the 5th to last episode. They took Bill Paxton out for an episode and the show immediately got better.

Bill Paxton is terrible. Especially when he and Ward are together; they are undoubtedly two of the worst "villains" I've ever seen. They are so cliche; I can't believe Marvel didn't give them mustaches to twirl while they discuss their evil plans.

I'm going to try and power through the last 4 episodes tonight, but I won't be surprised if I just can't take it anymore.

As for those of you that said the show gets better toward the end (DiB, I believe) - you couldn't have been more wrong. :)

To be fair, when I said that, I think it was around episode 16 or 17 when Ward had first turned, along with the episodes that tied into CA-TWS.

I'll admit, the show was disappointing in many regards, and doesn't measure up to the film universe it's based on. However, it did provide some interesting plot twists and helped set up the bigger MCU in intriguing ways. I'm hoping Season 2 improves on the overall quality and focuses on better characterization and more interesting villains.

I think Bill Paxton worked as a villain, but only because he's Bill Paxton. For me, he was able to pull off the stereotypical villain well without it feeling dumb. Ward on the other hand was a crappy villain. They never sold me on him. He wasn't bad, just a misguided youth who blindly followed the one person who had ever given him his attention. blech. If he's bad, let him be bad. Don't leave it open-ended so you can redeem him later.

But besides that, I really liked this show a lot. It wasn't perfect. But I'm definitely in for next season.

No, Ward was bad.
He set his house on fire with, IIRC, his brother inside.

He was completely set up to be a hurting teenager with a terrible upbringing who was recruited and brainwashed by Garret and Hydra. And that would have been fine, except they were sort of half-hearted about whether or not he was really evil or just conflicted.

He shot the dog, he dropped Fitz and Simmons out of the plane, but falling in love wasn't part of the plan and that's where he screwed up. He's evil in my eyes. That's not to say he can't be redeemed (I don't want him to be though).
