Dreamcasting Adaptations #16: BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU

This is going to be fun. But a little bit difficult, since I have an insanely clear and mostly original view of what Julia and O'Brian would look like.

I just remember reading this two years ago and automatically having a picture of who the characters should be. It's that iconic. The thing I also like about this round is that you have such a small cast of characters (one who doesn't even appear in it) that you can really put some thought into these characters.

I really want to cast this but I can't until I've read the book and I can't read the book because my library is taking forever to get me a copy.

Sigh.

Some good choices so far though.
Your library doesn't have 1984?

I'm not exactly a psychotic fan of the book, but seriously, how can your library not have that book?

Wow, American education is really going down the toilet if they can't stock their libraries with 1984.

Okay, one, I'm not American. I'm in New Zealand, you Chinese ****.

And my library has three copies, that are constantly checked out. I have never seen them so I've had to reserve them... and I'm still waiting.

Maybe it was just that they were in use and the library was waiting on them. My library has like fifteen copies of it.

Mole you seriously need to read the book. In my opinion it's one of the top ten greatest books of the 20th century. And for those of you adapting the movie you are wrong. This is the book I'm going off of.

Sorry not a big reader , but I might check it out in the future , Also I wasn't going off the film but the descriptions you posted

just curious what do you call people from New Zealand? New Zealandans? New Zealandians ? New Zealish?

I would hope that no one spoils this for any of the members who haven't yet read this masterpiece. The ending is truly astonishing and darkly perfect.

Yeah seriously, I'm surprised those of you planning to read it are in here. In my opinion
Julia handing him that note halfway through the book is in competition for the greatest and most pleasing twist in any book I've ever read.

According to the CIA World Factbook, the people of New Zealand are named New Zealanders. Also, people of the Bahamas are called Bahamians, people of Bermuda are called Bermudians, the people of Burkina Faso are Burkinabe, the people of Christmas Island are Christmas Islanders, and the people of Chad are Chadian.

I think both are applicable. New Zealander being the term used formally, and Kiwi being a self-assigned appellate, a nickname.

I double-checked and Wikipedia agrees with me.

But then again, Wikipedia lies.

I haven't casted in a while due to time, but this is one of my favorite books so I'll give it a shot. Here goes nothing...

1984

Winston Smith: Daniel Day Lewis

Lets face it. Daniel Day Lewis might just be the best actor out there right now. Though he doesn't do a lot of movies, the ones in which he is in almost always lead to a best picture nomination. A movie like 1984 would be enough to interest him. He fits in with the overall description of Winston. I don't think I need to convince anyone that he has the acting chops to pull off such a role.

Julia: Rose Byrne

This was probably the hardest character to cast. My initial reaction was that Eva Green would be good, but that is already taken. Oh well. To get the real world feeling of the book I chose an actress that was beautiful, but still looks like someone you might see walking down the street.

O'Brien: Liam Neeson

One of the things I like about the novel is the twist when it is revealed that O'Brien is a "bad guy". For this to come across on screen you need an actor with a certain goodness. I this I mean that the audience won't suspect he is the bad guy based on the character he has played in the past. Though Liam Neeson played the villain in Batman Begins, he is still ideal for this type of character. Add to that his powerful and commanding presence and he is a good fit for O'Brien.

Big Brother: Brian Cox

Though he is an important figure in the book, Big Brother really wouldn't be that large of a role. What I mainly looked for was somebody that was imposing in an authoritative kind of way.

Well since you guys are a bunch of picky bastards I changed my Big Brother.

He'd still work better as the giant holograhpic Wizard in my TWOO pitch.:)

In all seriousness I'm against the idea of Orson Welles as Big Brother for the same reasons I'm for him as the CGI Wizard hologram in a Wizard of Oz remake. He's a classic and powerful symbol of American cinema. Having him as the socialist dictator in a British film doesn't really make sense.

Definitely. The first part of the books sinks you deep into Winston's world of black depression and absolute, utter hopelessness and then Julia hands him the note and you keep thinking, 'Ooo, I bet she's in The Brotherhood or something' and Winston reads the note...And it's like the whole universe lights up. It's brilliant. There's love, there's hope, there's something worth living for. I couldn't stop smiling after that scene.

*starts searching for new Winston*

I was in Math class reading for the remainder of the period after a test and that part happened a minute before the bell wrang. I grabbed the girl next to me and full-on kissed her. She asked what the hell I was doing and I yelled "Don't you see? She loves him! SHE LOVES HIM!".

The rest of the morning was me waiting for lunch so I could keep reading. That was easily my favourite day of reading the whole book, because even when I wasn't reading it I was just so happy and excited with where the story went it made me just think "life is awesome" all day.

Edit: People can check my initial post for an addition to the cast.

Edit #2: I just went on the IMDb message boards to look at some of the dreamcasts there, and good lord, people are crazy. One guy had "Daniel Day-Lewis as Winston Smith.... Leo DiCaprio as O'Brien". Another had Helena Bonham-Carter as Julia. Has nobody even given the book a passing glance? Most of the lists were filled with American actors, VERY American ones who would not seem right doing British accents, and most of them were just big blockbuster stars anyway. People are crazy.

Will Smith as Winston Smith and Conan O'Brien as O'Brien wasn't bad though.
