IGN's Top 100 videogames of all time

some of you may have noticed that IGN has a Top 100 video games article going on right now

it brings back alot of nostalgia for the old days of gaming when instead of slapping you behind the helmet of Generic futuristic soldier who fights aliens #578 you had games that were highly original (Note: i'm not saying that there isn't orignal games anymore)

Eligible games had to have been released no later than December 31, 2006 (perspective is a good thing)

A number of factors were taken into consideration when selecting a winner: How good the game was compared to others of its time, its overall game design, how well it stands up over the years, how influential it has been in the realm of gaming and just plain how much fun we had playing it are all points for contention.

The list is comprised of single, stand-alone titles and doesn't include compilations, expansion packs or add-ons.

Titles with multiple editions such as collector's boxes, gold editions or direct re-releases have been consolidated into one single entry, with the edition deemed most deserving taking precedence.

Updated versions of original titles were only included on the list if they were significantly different from their predecessors.

There are some games on there that I haven't even heard of, and Contra should definitely be higher on the list. Tetris, Pacman, Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart, Halo, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Pong must be in the top 50. Oh, and Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Seamen, 007: Goldeneye, and Final Fantasy 7. Also, one of the Soul Caliburs and one of the Tekkens should be on there.

EDIT: WTF?!?! How are Resident Evil, Final Fantasy 7, and Goldeneye that low on the list?!?!

i don't think any games from the last 6 months should be in at all, hype factor always inflates a ranking, it's better to have no ranking at all than to have one that it doesn't deserve

Even though I've never actually played it, I'm stunned WoW isn't in the Top 50.

I just hope Halo 2 is in at least the top 20. Also, I would've liked to see the Spider-Man 2 game on there somewhere, but if it wasn't in the 100-50 section, I doubt it'll be on their list at all.

i felt the same for Mortal Kombat 2, IMO it deserves to be in the 100-70 range but any higher and it wouldn't deserve it

Unless you're some kind of freak job that plays every game and lives for nothing but games that shouldn't be a surprise.

That said, these guys are supposed to be writing about games for a living so it's a given that just because we don't know those games, doesn't mean they can't be on that list.

Also, I'm not going to argue over whether Halo is a good game, or which of the three games is better than the other. Or how influential it is.
