The Apple Products Thread

I saw the opening sketch for Mind of Mencia and it had some guy complaining about his ipod bleeding so Mencia gave him the iPON. I almost laughed but I figured I would have been laughing at someone else's ingenuity. I then promptly began to change the channel and ended up watching The Office on Hulu.

I plan to buy my girlfriend a mac for Christmas, one of those big 25" monitor ones. i figured her ipod would be more compatible with that than her delltop, but could anyone tell me if it is just as susceptible to virus' and annoying updates every two minutes? And are WoW and Steam compatible with Mac's or would I have to buy/download some program for that?

I don't know if iPods work better with Macs than PCs. I've never used one with a PC. As for games....Macs are known for not being great gaming machines but I think that's mostly because of the lack of games and not anything having to do with the hardware. I don't play games on my computers so I don't know. Skotti might.

I've never had a virus on any of my Macs and I don't believe it's common at all. I think this has more to do with the fact that virus writers generally don't bother writing them for Macs - the payoff on a PC virus is much much bigger.

The virus question. No, not ever. There are no viruses in the wild for mac. There are like 12 malwares, but they involve the user actively installing the malware (they're disguised as codecs to run certain porn sites).

To the update question. No, important updates can be set to download on their own in the background, you'll then get a one time "Install and reboot or do it later" pop-up.

To the WoW question. Yes, all Blizzard games are hybrid discs. They have both a PC and Mac version on the same install CD/DVD. Installing is stupidly easy. I personally get better performance on my mac install of WoW than I ever did on PC.

To the Steam question. Sadly no, Gabe Newell is a douche. Wanting things like a $1 Million license per game (which he only demands of Apple) and his company having a say in hardware options (again, which he only demands of Apple) has kept anything Valve off Macs. With that said, you can install windows on a mac for Valve and other games that don't support apple. (I have Windows installed on my MacPro to play games like Mass Effect and Final Fantasy XI). So all you'll need is a copy of Windows XP SP2+ or Vista.

As to iPods working better, I've not really noticed a difference. Generally, if an iPod is working crappy on a windows machine, I've been able to track it down to an issue with Windows (ie: bad dll, or registry entry for iTunes).

Oh and PS: Macs used to be deficient on the GPU/video card options, which is why a LOT of gaming companies bashed the mac. As of the last refreshes on the iMac and MacPro, you can get the high end nVidia GeForce 8800 GT(S).

Okay, on iTunes, I list my albums in chronological order. I have a problem. Both A Hard Day's Night and Beatles for Sale came out in 1964. A Hard Day's Night came out first, but it lists it after Beatles for Sale. How do I swap them around so Beatles for Sale comes after A Hard Day's Night?

I'll be getting a 16 gigger.

Wonder if the ATT&T subsidizing rumors will be true?

according to my dad's AT&T rep (through his work), yes, AT&T will be subsidizing, but they're not allowed to share details till around the 29th of June.

Nice. Will the be subsidizing ALL activations, or just ones bought in AT&T stores?

since now a days most AT&T subsidies are now rebate cards, i could see it working on all activations.

I just read that the 199/299 is already subsidized, and that Apple will no longer be receiving a cut of the contracts.

Also read that all activations must be done in store - no more over iTunes. Not sure I believe that one.

I'm pretty disappointed over the lack of the front camera and no 32 GB. I assume there is no 32 because it would make the iPod Touch a profound ripoff, but I hold out hope that there will be a 32 in a few months. For that reason I'm thinking I might just hold on to my iPhone 1.0 for the time being.

Also - $10 for apps? Total ripoff.

actually, the $10 for the iPhone software for the Touch makes total sense. It's not part of the price of the Touch, so by accounting, it has to be levied. It'd be like taking your newer GM car in and having the timing changed to let your gas burning engine run on E-85 Ethanol. Yes, GM sells E-85 ready cars and trucks, but your car wasn't sold with it, so you have to be charged a nominal fee for their accounting purposes.

According to Jobs' speech though, the iPhone 2.0 software will be free for iPhone 1.0 owners, the $10 is only for the Touch.

I agree with that - I meant $10 for the apps from the apps store is too much. They should be closer to $5.

Although supposedly the developers will be able to charge what they want...so who knows.

yeah, all app prices are set by developers.

I've tried to get the "This is Sportcenter" commercials from iTunes (under ESPN's podcast section), but for some reason it's not working and hasn't been for over a month.

This sucks. :(

You can't download them, or you can't get them on your iPod?

It would tell me that it's unavailable to download and to try again later. Then I tried again like a week later (I first tried at the last weekend of May) and it said the same thing.

I haven't tried again since, yet.

I just downloaded the Spelling Bee one. You should try now, if you can't, I can try looking for a solution.
