Timeline Hub

The Exorcist: Believer is in the same continuity as the other Exorcist movies beyond the original, stated by the director. This made me interested in learning more about the timeline.

The problem comes with the prequels. They're different films telling the exact same story in a different way. It's confusing, but basically the films feature the same characters in different ways with entirely different scenes. There's also some issues between the prequels and the first two films. I'm planning on watching all the films as if they were the same continuity though, just to see if it could fit in any way. The prequels are likely going to be different continuities to one another, so I guess one of them is supposed to be thrown out.

At the very least, the first three films are confirmed canon. If the new film says the first movie is set in 1973, that's a small retcon to the third, but either way, it's canon.

There's a crossover character with The Ninth Configuration apparently, and it's apparently explicitly related to The Exorcist in general.

The TV Series is a sequel to the original film, but a character dies in it that is alive in the new installment so it can't be the same continuity as the films. So, that's absolutely cut.

Film Timeline
1947 - Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist [Schrödinger's Canon]
1949 - Exorcist: The Beginning [Schrödinger's Canon]
1975 - The Exorcist
197? - The Ninth Configuration
1979 - Exorcist II: The Heretic
1990 - The Exorcist III
2023 - The Exorcist: Believer

TV Series Timeline

1975 - The Exorcist
2016 - The Exorcist 1x01-1x10
2017 - The Exorcist 2x01-2x10
There is one of the movies that has 2 different cuts, right?

Are you talking about the two prequel movies? They're basically completely different films that tell the same general story. I would assume that Dominion would take greater precedence, but I'd need to watch both.

What I expect it to look like when I'm done is this:
  1. They reshot Dominion as Exorcist: The Beginning. That film is intended to be in the continuity of 1-3 and TNC.
  2. They then allowed the original movie, Dominion, to be finished and released. This movie is intended to be in the continuity of 1-3 and TNC, ignoring The Beginning.
  3. The Exorcist: Believer is therefore set in the current post-2005 "retconed" timeline of Dominion.

For now, I'm gonna watch Dominion, then The Beginning as the second prequel, and see how they fit in conjunction with each other.

I have checked that out, yes, Dominion and Beginning are the 2 movies that I was thinking.

One thought I just had, I suppose it's possible the new Exorcist movie is set before the TV series, but it's unlikely.

Another thing, I find it funny how wikipedia considers each film to be a separate continuity from one another when the third film specifically avoids contradicting the second with camera positioning, and the David Green specifically said that the other film could "fall into the acceptable mythology" for what he's doing. He clearly implies that all films are canon in the article, though it's kinda difficult if that includes both prequels. Or maybe not. I'm intrigued.

EDIT: I think both prequels can technically be canon as long as you're okay with characters sharing the same name. It sounds stupid, but technically The Beginning could happen 2 years after Dominion even if it wasn't intended. I don't think the new movie has specifically said it's set in present day or anything. It's probably best to assume the show is canon until the movie outright contradicts it.

In which case, this would be the completionist timeline.
1947 - Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist
1949 - Exorcist: The Beginning
1975 - The Exorcist
197? - The Ninth Configuration

20?? - The Exorcist: Believer

2017 - The Exorcist 2x01-2x10

Willow Timeline

I'm a huge fan of the 1988 George Lucas Film Willow, so I thought I would do a Timeline, but I don't think it needs an own thread. Not sure if I will do a Timestamp Timeline, because the Willow TV Series is no longer on Disney+. The Series retconned the Shadow War Trilogy, so I'll do them in a seperate Timeline. Oh, and I'll include adaptations. Not sure about the NES Game, I'll include it, because it adds some new stuff, but, given its nature, it doesn't 100% line up with the movie, but the (very incomplete) wiki treats it as canon.

(In case I'll do the detailed Timeline: BBN/ABN = Before Battle of Nockmaar/After Battle of Nockmaar)

Oh, one other note, on April 1, 2006 there were Willow entries in the Star Wars Databank, connecting the two Universes, but it was later revealed as an April Fool. I saw one Timeline including Willow pretty early in the timeline, though no idea where I saw it. Anyways, here are the Timelines:

Willow "Canon" Viewing Order:
0 BBN/ABN:
Willow
Willow: A Novel
(Adaptation of Willow)
Willow #1 (Adaptation of Willow)
Willow #2 (Adaptation of Willow)
Willow #3 (Adaptation of Willow)
Willow (NES Version, Adaptation of Willow)

20 ABN:
Willow 1x01: The Gales
Willow 1x02: The High Aldwin
Willow 1x03: The Battle of the Slaughtered Lamb
Willow 1x04: The Whispers of Nockmaar
Willow 1x05: Wildwood
Willow 1x06: Prisoners of Skellin
Willow 1x07: Beyond the Shattered Sea
Willow 1x08: Children of the Wyrm

Chronicles of the Shadow War Viewing Order:
0 BBN/ABN:
Willow
Willow: A Novel
(Adaptation of Willow)
Willow #1 (Adaptation of Willow)
Willow #2 (Adaptation of Willow)
Willow #3 (Adaptation of Willow)
Willow (NES Version, Adaptation of Willow)

12 ABN:
Shadow Moon
Shadow Dawn
Shadow Star

20?? - The Exorcist: Believer
2016 - The Exorcist 1x01-1x10
2017 - The Exorcist 2x01-2x10
Notes:
  • The Ninth Configuration is set during the end of the Vietnam War. American participation ended in January 1973, 2 years before The Exorcist in 1975. Billy Cutshaw is supposed to be the astronaut that was told by Pazuzu that they were going to die in space.
  • On The Ninth Configuration fan site, the author seems to reject the notion that he stated The Ninth Configuration is a sequel to The Exorcist.
  • It seems that only the book version of Billy Cutshaw is the same from The Exorcist based on official word, as it was said by the author based on the rewritten 1978 version of the original 1967 book.
Conclusion: The Ninth Configuration being connected to The Exorcist is a myth created by the author confirming that in the book rewrite Billy Cutshaw is from The Exorcist, and a video where it was stated that The Ninth Configuration was part of the author's thematic "Faith Trilogy" from The Exorcist, The Ninth Configuration and Legion (all book versions). The timeline set by The Exorcist III is incompatible with The Ninth Configuration and the actors for the astronaut in The Exorcist and Billy in The Ninth Configuration are different.

Wikipedia lacking sources, as usual.

I, personally, would probably have The Exorcist (TV Series) and The Exorcist: Believer as either splitting off from The Exorcist III (set in 1990) or have The Exorcist: Believer set before the series, probably 2010-2015, though it's likely the new film will set itself in 2023 to be "fifty years later".

Assuming no one has a timeline in the works, I'm considering doing the American Story franchise (which currently consists of American Horror Story, American Crime Story and American Horror Stories, with American Sports Story and American Love Story also in the works) at some point. That said, with how graphic the AHS side can get, I'm not sure if I can fully stomach the contents, but considering I've seen gore and whatnot elsewhere, well...
giphy.gif

So uhhh, wish me luck?

As a side-note, I may be less active due to starting college this week, but I'll try my best to keep pumping out updates on the JJBA Timeline. Anything changes, I'll be sure to post an update.

After a few searches, it's something like this for starters. You know I love making lists, so...

1954 - American Horror Story S4 (Freak Show)
1964 - American Horror Story S2 (Asylum)
1981 - American Horror Story S11 (NYC)
1984 - American Horror Story S9 (1984)
1995 - American Crime Story S1 (The People v. O. J. Simpson)
1997 - American Crime Story S2 (The Assassination of Gianni Versace)
1998 - American Crime Story S3 (Impeachment)
2011 - American Horror Story S1 (Murder House)
2013 - American Horror Story S3 (Coven)
2015 - American Horror Story S5 (Hotel)
2016 - American Horror Story S6 (Roanoke)
2017 - American Horror Story S7 (Cult)
2021 - American Horror Story S8 (Apocalypse)
2021 - American Horror Story S10 (Double Feature)
2021 - American Horror Stories S1

Oh, that's a good start, but ideally, I was planning to do a timestamped order, if that makes sense (considering the huge amount of flashbacks and whatnot).

Not to mention, Stories is an anthology series, where each episode is standalone, which makes things more confusing.

I was thinking about doing a Middle-Earth Cinematic Timeline, including:
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: Extended Cut
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: Extended Cut
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King: Extended Cut
  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey: Extended Cut
  • The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug: Extended Cut
  • The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies: Extended Cut
  • The Rings of Power Season 1
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
  • The Third Age
  • The Battle for Middle-Earth
  • The Battle for Middle-Earth II
    • The Battle for Middle-Earth II: The Rise of the Witch-King
  • Aragorn's Quest
  • War in the North
  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor
  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of War
Dunno if I'm actually going to do it though. My other thought was doing a Disenchantment Timeline, though there is a Futurama Cameo, so I don't think I'll do it. Anyways, I want to be more active here from now on and wish to contribute some timelines

Isn't the lord of the Rings online set in the cinematic universe?

Hold on, I'm pretty sure The Rings of Power isn't canon to the films. Still, I'd give an arm to see a Middle-Earth Cinematic Timeline

You put 2235 after 2770. Also I think The Hobbit 1 Extended Edition has a flashback to Bilbo's childhood (?)

Anyone interested to doing a James Bond Movies Timeline(s)?
Eon
Original Continuity (1962-2002)
Reboot Continuity (2006-2021)

Non-Eon
Casino Royale (1967)
Never Say Never Again (1983)

An interesting fact is that the 2010 GoldenEye game shows a new version of those events that take place in the Reboot Timeline. Always liked that.
