Bingo! She's the crazy old lady from Donnie Darko, for anybody else who didn't get it.
I think I stumped people with the "alive in the late 19th century" clue. The movie explicitly states that she's 101 years old. (Although it just occured to me that this fact might me limited to the DVD-only Director's Cut, which is the only version I've seen.)
