Pretty sure the place the crime boss was at was some sort of mineral refining facility, so if there was a meteorite crash nearby he probably thought there would be a good place to look
Stryker had met a Nigerian crime boss at his illegal mineral refining facility in Lagos, Nigeria. Seeking minerals for military applications, for potential experimental armor and weapons, he attempted to negotiate a supply.

During the meeting, Stryker noticed an unusual metallic rock displayed on the crime boss' desk. Intrigued by its potential military use, he requested the rock and information about its origin. The crime boss refused, and Stryker left empty-handed.

Later, Stryker returned with his team of mutants, Team X, to pressure the crime boss. Under threat, the boss revealed the rock had been found in a small village. When Stryker and Team X went to the village, the locals initially refused to disclose the rock’s origin. The confrontation escalated into a violent conflict, prompting Logan to leave Team X.

Ultimately, the villagers revealed the location, leading Stryker to a meteorite impact site in Africa. He secured the meteor, which had fallen prior to 1973. Using its metal, Stryker created a new alloy: Adamantium.

In Revised Timeline, similar events occurred, but Stryker acted without the existence of Team X.
