So #102 is a far cry better than 101..........but considering the fact that I would rather wipe my *** with #101 and then light it on fire rather than view a single page of the issue---being better than #101 isn't that great of an accomplishment.

Synopsis
We open with the F4 pleading with Fury to let Peter go. Fury basically tells them to shut up and go color. Peter chimes in and tells the F4 to let it go---it's over.

Then outta nowhere SpiderWoman jumps thru the crowd, grabs Peter and escapes with him. S.H.I.E.L.D soldiers and Johnny Storm try to follow---but she loses them. She frees Peter from his constraints and tells him to follow her.

They hitch a ride ontop a truck and we begin the standard "back and Forth Bendis" dialogue. Peter asks who she is and she unmasks. SpiderWoman is revealed to be a "clone" (I know E hates the specifics of that word but bear with me) of Peter. Ultimate SpiderWoman is the UU equivelant to X-23. What a shock.

She fills Peter in on what's going on.....at least with her. We then get a flashback of SpiderWoman's memories. Ben Reilly is speaking to her. The scene is done in FPS kinda like when they were creating Robocop. We get the backstory of Ben being arrested after the whole Carnage ordeal and while Conners is in jail for a while---the govt released Ben because he still had a smaple of Peter's blood and Conner's notes. Basically he was recruited by the govt to make an army of spider-powered soldiers.......the next version of the Super Soldier Serum.

Now since she's a clone of Peter---she has all his memories of being a boy. But since that ain't gonna work they're gonna bring in a psychic and wipe her mind and giver her a new identity. She will known as Special Agent Jessica Drew.

After the flashback we see Jessica and Peter sitting on the truck and then we're treated to the classic "I'M FREAKING OUT HERE!" outburst by Peter......but then Jessica does it too. So yeah.....Freak Out x2. Peter then asks where the costume came from.

Another flashback reveals that it was given to her by the govt. I guess she was in some training exercise and then she was introduced to the psychic that was gonna wipe her mind---Cassandra Webb. But before she can wipe her mind, an explosion goes off down the hall and we see that Carnage is loose (the doctors call it the Stacy Experiment). Carnage escapes---but as he escapes the power goes off and all the other Spider Clones are released from holding cells. They all have Peter's memory too---so they naturally freak out and run to save MJ (even though she's not in danger at the moment). A funny thing to note is that the six-armed Spider actually has black eyes and furry face like Man-Spider. Mildly cool---but ultimately lame. So all the clones are on the loose.

We then cut back to the truck and Jessica tells Peter that they're back where this all started. They jump off the truck and we see them standing in front of OsCorp.

Inside we see that She-Wolf/MJ has knocked out Man-Spider and is about to attack Scarface Peter. There's a few panels of the Spider people jumping around all nimbly and whatnot---but it all ends when Real Peter stands between MJ and her prey. MJ recognizes him and calms down. Then all of a sudden she transforms back to regular MJ and faints. Scarface is still crazy and rambling about how now she can protect herself. Peter kicks the crap out of Scarface and starts screaming questions like "where did he get the Oz from?" "how did he do it?" blah blah blah. We then see a little word bubble at the bottom of the panel coming from some mystery person claiming that Scarface got it "from me...."

The next panel shows that the mystery speaker is Doc Ock.

To be continued........

2.5/5

So we finally get some answers but there's still a lot left up in the air.

  • How does Peter's dad play into all this?
  • What happened to Carnage?
  • What about Aunt May?
  • What about MJ?

The list goes on......but quite honestly......now that Osborn isn't behind all this---I don't really care.

Like I said---2.5 because some of the dialogue was pretty smart and not all "questiony" and it wasn't a bad issue in general....just falling short of expectations.

Meh...........hurry up with this arc and get to a new creative team.

Since the "shock" of Spider-Woman being a clone has long since passed (Honestly, who didn't see it comming), I'm actually ok with her being Jessica. I mean. . .I never really liked the original Spider-Woman and at least the two characters (Spider-Man and Woman) are tied together now. It also appears that she may be sticking around for a little while, which I'm also ok with. Tarantula being similar to Man-Spider is neat, too.

Nice appearance by Cassandra Webb.

As for Doc Ock being "behind" it, I still think its horsecrap. I think he's still acting as a subordinate of Osborn and I think that is what Bendis and Bagley's final story will be about: Peter confronting Norman one final time. I also want to know how Ock got away from SHIELD. . .again.

Still intrested about the Carnage/Gwen conncetion. Is Gwen a clone of the original using the Carnage technique or is she the real Gwen, revived using Carnage (I prefer the latter, but suspect the former)? And if it is the former. . .why clone Gwen Stacy? And, of course, I want to know what the deal with Richard is.

Another thing is: How is Peter going to stay out of SHIELD custody? Unless Peter blackmails them by saying how he will tell the press about the government's experiments with cloning.

Anyway, despite the fact that MJ is a Goblin (Which, honestly, was the lowest point in the entire series), I still like the Clone Saga and want to see how it all wraps up. It's not the be-all-end-all USM arc like it was pitched as (Far from it), but I still think its better than the Deadpool, Carnage, and Silver Sable arcs.

Wait, if the govt. gave her the suit, and its similar to the venom suit, then do we come to the conclusion that the govt. may have Brock? Besides, by the time this all finishes up in Feburary, there will probably either be an arc dealing with Harry or Venom, in time for the movie. Seems like perfect timing.

bleh.

Though I am intrigued by the Stacy Project thing.

And Special Agent Jessica Drew.......make her S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Special Agent Drew, a.k.a. Scarlet Spider.....perhaps.
This would solve how Fury would get a Spider-Man ans Peter could remain solo after 18. But it's just a thought.

Osborn not behind it? PERFECT.

Osborn's behind everything in 616, but in the UU he's mostly just a crazy Hulk ripoff. It would be good to see Norman back to being a mastermind.

Er...um...no. The suit isn't a red version of the symbiote. It's just a dark red cloth suit with a giant spider on it.

Once again....swing and a miss. While I didn't mention it in my summary---SHIELD does not equal the entire govt. She's actually working for the CIA. So Special Agent is appropriate. And it's just Spider Woman.

And you spider fans gotta let the whole Scarlet Spider thing go.

Sounds like an awesome issue.

I am thrilled Ock is behind this. Makes alot more sense, and he's a way better villain than Osborn anyway.

Way to go Ock!

I agree. UGG just doesn't seem to have the "evilness" of 616-GG, and its too late to go back. Doc Ock is a good villain, and I could see him taking Osborne's place.

However, I know that there are fans who really like Ultimate Osborne's human persona, and are turned away by his hulk-like form, so I don't expect too many people to agree with me.

Ok, read the issue. First issue since 97 that I've truly enjoyed. Finally we find out who Spider-woman is, and to my relief it's not Kitty Pryde in yet another costume. Jessica Drew, very cool. But very creepy about her having Peter's memories.
And MJ de-Goblinized at the sight of Peter, *phew*. Never want to see that again. And the Tarantula is alive ( but creepy looking ). So lots of goodstuff in one issue. Seriously, this arc needed this issue.

I love this arc. Bendis and Bagley are the best comic team ever. The only thing that would make this even better is if Ultimate Scarlet Spider shows up.

OMG!!1!111! Ultimate Scarlet Spider would be teh coolest! Maybe Ben Reilly can inject himself with the spider serum and become Ultimate Scarlet Spider. ROFLCOPTER!!!!

Ok but what about her shooting web out of her finger? Seems to me that that was one of the venom suit's features.....And Peter doesn't do that, so neither would his DNA allow a clone to either.

And what I meant was that she could become a SHIELD agent. Not that she is one. And has Jessica gone by the name Spider-Woman?

And one last thing. In 101 a fan asked if we would see Ultimate Scarlet Spider. The response was "well, this would be the place for him..."

I Still think that some other entity and the CIA is running this operation. Like Ultimate AIM or Ultimate Hydra.

You know, you dont have to cut n00bs down every time they post about spiderman. Its possible for people to actually want to see the Scarlet Spider.

I mean, it was the coolest thing that came out of the original Clone Saga, and its one of the better costumes. Although I dont really care if we see S.S. or not, I think it could be done well.

"Doc Ock is behind this"

"Doc Ock is responsible"

"Doc Ock gave them the Oz formula"

Am I the only guy who noticed Fury/Shield and the Fantastic Four accompanying Doctor Octavius on that last panel?

And Hydra or A.I.M. is not behind this. Sorry Darth Kosh but that's already overloading this overwhelming story.

This was ridiculous. Let's just make a lot of clones and one of them will be female but thinks she's male. Can't wait for the freaks to come out of the woodwork and applaud that idea. "SHE'S LIKE TOTALLY GONNA GET IT ON WITH MJ!!! How hot would that be."

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Not necessarily. The other clones could all have been just experiments, and Jessica was the closest to a pure clone of Peter they could get.

I dunno. . .for some reason, I just like having Jessica be a clone of Peter. She becomes kind of like a twin sister, but works for the government instead, doing what Peter doesn't want to do. I like her a lot better than X-23 for some reason, too.

I don't think any of the clones besides Jessica and whatever the hell Gwarnage is should make it out of the Clone Saga alive. Jessica has the makings of a decent character, and they could do something with Gwen. . .

 The roflcpoter graphic is freaking awesome.

Why did his DNA make the turantula have a spiderface. Or make the other clone ugly. They aren't perfect clones. After all she is a girl, that seems pretty different from Peter. Why would his DNA allow that? Besides this whole arguement is probably mute, Peter has web shooters and she probably does too. It's not to big a stretch to think that maybe the Spider-Woman suit shoots them out someplace new. You're looking for connections where there are none.

Yes. They named her Spider-Woman.

Sounds like a red herring to throw off dimwitted fanboys. Not that I'm calling anyone here a dimwitted fanboy.

That aside. This was... a good issue. I really didn't expect to say that after the debacle of 101, but this wasn't bad. If they find a way to change MJ back without ever letting her go Goblin again I'll be a happy camper. Sure it'll make the ending to last issue even worse from a storytelling standpoint, but seriously I just want that little storyline to end before it begins. Also I assume Doc Oc was in on the clone project since he called the clone his son, so then why did he show up with Nick Fury and not the CIA? I'm actually looking forward to that. The Jessica Drew stuff was good, so lets just have this big fight with Doc Oc, explain how Doc Oc ended up working with Ben Reilly to make clones of Peter under CIA direction, find out why Peter's Dad was working in the same building on the Gwarnage project and retcon a goodly portion of this subpar and at times terrible story and we're good to go.

3.5/5 - The best issue since before Deadpool and it's only a 3.5. Why do I keep buying this?

Because you're a masochist? Or you have a ridiculous amount of hope? Or you're a fanboy? Or you're a completeist (Which may actually fall under category 1. . .)? Take your pick.
