Since we've been so cruel to Bendis, I think it's only fair we talk about his original series.

I've only read the first arc, but I thought it was pretty good.

I only read the first ICON arc, and didn't care for it...

I got turned off by the horrid art. Who's the artist on the book?

...but I do like the art. It's Mike Oeming.

The first ICON arc was only enjoyable if you read the entire Image run, 60% of which was complete drivel.

I have no idea why people think Powers is where Bendis is never crap. It's full of infantile conversational gags, annoying cop-out endings that keep detectives from detecting, loads of typographical errors.

Also, inserting 'Easter eggs' in the form of civilians and streets named after buddies and comic book creator names stopped being cute after the first arc. Now it's just detracting and annoying and even if you were a person who wouldn't recognize those names, it doesn't add anything to the book so why not just attempt to create a real sense of urban space to this unnamed city? Oh wait, that'd involve EFFORT.

Look, I'll defend Bendis a lot to a lot of people. He's the creator that got me back into comics through Sam & Twitch. I love Fortune & Glory for its cheap laughs. I totally loved Jinx and Goldfish. I still think that up until issue 50, USM wasn't half as bad as people make it out to be. But Powers is easily the worst written book he's ever done in spite of some of the brilliant ideas present in stuff like "The Sellouts" and "Forever". But 'ideas' do not excuse bad writing.

Oh, and I like Oeming.

Omening. And I really love the simplicity of his art. His clean pseudo-animated style tells stories very well.

I could never get into powers, and damn did I try. I mean its a police procedural set around dealing with superheros. Sounds like its right up my alley, but OurChair pretty much hit on my dislikes for the book, more so the plot points than the editing mistakes.

That's funny, because right before Bendis took it to Icon I asked him directly, via his message board, if it was necessary to read the first volume in order to enjoy it or get what's going on. he said no, and in fact was pretty rude about it.

I didn't have a clue what was going on.

So TOG - blame Bendis, not me.

I'll tell him at Philly.

I'll be fair and say that I guess you could enjoy ICON Powers Volume 1 if you read Image Volume 1, but the fact is that the twit didn't even bother to reintroduce the characters and current events or premise within, which I think was a fatal mistake for a 'relaunch'.

As a long-time reader of Bendis, I can tell you that he has a very bad habit of saying "everyone can appreciate it" or "it stands on its own" when that's actually complete balderdash.

And with regards to his fan interactions, I never liked his 'humorously abrupt' manner of responding. It can be funny, but I think it's not as consistently funny to 'everyone' as he --- or the people who write his Wikipedia entry --- thinks it is.

His dickery is well documented.

I... I genuinely can't tell whether this book is good or not. I'm not even sure if I enjoy it. It's like it exists in a vacuum for me. I've read almost all of the series and I can't make a value judgment on it. There are a few things that will make me roll my eyes, like the stupid random club rants, and there are a few things I'll like, like Christian telling the girl how to avoid upskirt and the superhero/villain teamup to get notoriety but... I really can't tell how I feel about it.

I used to feel the same way --- there're elements of it I find that are really smart, but then other elements that were just completely juvenile --- to the point of making me feel similarly undecided about my feelings, but now that I've stopped actively collecting it I look at my trades and hate them.

I think I tend to hate it more because people put it on a pedestal above his mainstream Marvel work, when honestly I find that giving him the free reign that comes with a creator-owned superhero work is just license to let him be an idiot.

But uh... Calista is HOT.
