Deadly Shooting at Virgina Tech

Yes. It's called East Timor.

As for this whole Virginia Tech thing... way I see it, that kid, no matter how ****ed up he was, no matter how 'evil' he may have been, no matter our political climate, the way I see it is this:

We've always had malfunctioning people. People who will just destroy other human beings not out of any kind of survival, but because they can and want to (whatever the motivations may be). However, it's only a recent phenomena that one person can execute 30 by themselves without help. That's due to the proliferation of firearms. When a guy went crazy and attacked a school a hundred years ago, maybe 3 people would die, because he had an axe and you can run away from an axe. Even a revolver can be run from because of the required reloading. But automatic weapons?

The only real reason 30 people died is not because the guy went mental, but because they guy went mental with an automatic weapon. He's the reason any one died at all, but the reason for the high body count rests in the lack of regulation of automatic firearms.

Damn shame.
Bass wins.

Mass genocide? wasn't there like two ethnic cleansings in Africa in the past two decades? i remember in thailand a little over a decade ago, the emporer was trying to brainwash the whole country like somethign out of a book and just have them be drones of some sort. I mean the phrase goes, violence only beseeches more violence. I'm exhausted with this now. even if there is a decline, it's still extremely bad.

There's still a lot of genocide in the world, but I think it's much less supported. The only reason why genocides continue to happen today is because the western world is generally oblivious to them. A few hundred years ago, genocide was casual. You would have been hardpressed to find a European who gave two ****s about what was happening to the Native Americans.

And yes the world is still extremely violent. We can't forget that. But like I said, it's an issue of hope. Knowing that the modern world is actually progressing rather than degressing makes some of our more lofty ideas about society and humanity seem that much closer.

I totally see where you are coming from. I where the others were coming from as well.

My point though was it's impossible to determine it beacuse there are too many factors to take in consideration. E.g TwilightEL mentioned the killing of slaves , I mentioned unreported stuff. TheManWithoutFear mentioned the wild west and more.

Plus even today there is too much to consider just about today. E.g all the murders you don't see. The drive by shootings . Drug shootings ect.... So my point was It's too hard to see which was more violent

BUT yes it is still extremely bad.

Yeah. There's a huge decline in genocide and what not, in first world countries. Poorer countries, all kinds of **** happens all the time. As far as I can tell, the quality of life in the world has increased greatly, but not everywhere. For example, the quality of my life, and no doubt your life, would've been the envy of those who lived in the same place as us 100 years ago, and unthinkable in many ways.

But there you have it - as great as things are, there's as much ****e. Just never forget that the great things exist. A diamond's still a diamond, no matter how much **** it stinks of.

This is true; If I were to ask most kids in my school what the "killing fields" were, they'd ask me if that was a new horror movie. Hitler? "Wasn't he that guy who killed like, 5 Jewish people???" In fact, many kids at my school are convinced that Osama Bin Laden himself crashed the planes on 9/11. Those stupid, ignorant ****ers! God, I'm so tired of them! Sitting in their ivory towers, their ****ing towers of IVORY! GAH! IGNORANCE!!! THEY CAN ALL TO GO TO HELL!!! THEY CAN GO AND WATCH THE ****ING OC AND LISTEN TO FALL OUT BOY!! IN HELL!!!

I'm sorry you had to see my dark side.

In the 70s, the US and other countries helped sponsor the genocide of the East Timorians by the Indonesians. We had the Khmer Rouge, and we've had Bosnia and all those other horrible places. Still happens a lot today, I'm sad to say. :(

Exactly what I was trying to say. The problem is that those of us who are lucky enough to live in the first world should be more educated about what's going on elsewhere. The genocide and slavery still going on in the world would be much less tolerated if people actually knew that it was happening.

There's also the lack of safety nets in society and other forms of attention to 'mental' cases.

Seriously, I mean what's up with everyone being so 'perceptive' and giving indications that it was obvious to them this guy was a little cuckoo? If this isn't a case of hindsight enlightenment --- where suddenly people start acting more observant about matters at a time when such observation is no longer useful --- then why didn't anybody act concerned?

I'm not excusing the kid, but if the teachers saw his 'disturbing' writing, and his college mates observed his antisocial behavior, and his counselors were 'deeply concerned' then why didn't anyone throw him a safety net? It is more moronic to not act intelligently on what is obvious to you, than it is to act foolishly on limited understanding.

"And when you can't crawl, you ask someone to carry you a little further."

But NO ONE'S there.

Seriously. Two girls had reported that the guy had been stalking them. Teachers were so afraid to be alone with him they had secret codewords to alert other faculty members to call security. He set fire to one of the dorms at one point!!!

There's no excuse for not taking action towards this type of behavior. They should've locked him the **** up in Arkham after some of that stuff and not let him anywhere near that campus until the help he needed had been forced on him.

But the first thing that has to happen at this point is make a lockdown procedure that actually works. This is a real threat. We don't have time for **** like "1) Lock the doors, 2) Take Attendance, 3) Remain Calm"(the actual failsafe emergency procedure my school has posted in every room).

"You can't just tap someone on the shoulder and expect to get their attention anymore. You have to hit them with a sledgehammer. Then you'll see you have their undivided attention."

And can you believe those jerks in congress want to outlaw sledgehammering?

That's Republicans for you.
That's a pretty ****ed up sense of priorities, they let the guns slide but they want out with the sledgehammers.

Guns never convinced anybody of anything. Sledgehammers do.
