X-MEN AND WOLVERINE: THE MANGA

From the New York Anime Fest - Marvel and Del Rey have joined forces to produce new OEL manga starring Wolverine and the X-Men...

-----------------

Today at the New York Anime Festival, Marvel and Del Rey announced a joint project which will see their most popular properties produced as Original English Language manga: X-Men and Wolverine - the manga.

The deal, which will see two volumes of each produced in a traditional manga digest size, began when Marvel and Del Rey were in negotiations to publish the Iron Man movie adaptation, and grew to the final product. The black and white digests will be printed left-to-right, in a Western style format, and publication will begin in spring of 2009.

Creators named for the titles are:

X-Men - Written by Raina Telgemeier and Dave Roman with art by the Indonesian artist, Anzu.
Wolverine - Antony Johnston was named as writer, with the artist to be named later.

Del Rey's Dallas Middaugh stressed that the titles will be looking to reach out to manga readers – clearly a different readership than the traditional X-Men fan, as such, the styles of the two series will be shojo (aimed at girls) and shonen (aimed at boys), respectively. That is:

X-Men will be a shojo style manga, where the Xavier School is still a mutant academy, but it's a all-boys school – with Kitty Pryde, the heroine of the story is the only girl in the school. Kitty is torn between the popular Hellfire Club, led by Pyro, and the school misfits who she eventually bands together as the X-Men.

Didn't they already kind of do this with the Mangaverse?
The article touches on this very question.

Speaking to Newsarama, Cebulski told Newsarama that this is Marvel's move to jump "whole heartedly" into manga, whereas past attempts have been more experiments in manga - such as Kia Asamiya on X-Men, etc. Continuing to differentiate, Cebulksi cited the Marvel Mangaverse, which he spearheaded, which was originally supposed to be written and illustrated by Japanese creators, but wound up using more Western creators writing and drawing in a manga or "mangafied" style. These two projects won't be like that, Cebulski explained.

Cebulski noted that Tsutomu Nihei's Wolverine: Snikt however, was a series that stood out to Marvel at the time as the way to do it, as it was written and drawn by an acclaimed Japanese creator, and Marvel was impressed by the reader response to it as well as from a creative standpoint.

Eh, it still sounds the same. I mean, yeah, now an Eastern artist is doing the art, but when it really comes down to it, it's been done.

Pass from me.

Now an Eastern artist AND writers are doing this. Meaning, it won't be the same because the writers have different interpretations in how they do their stories.

The writers are Eastern? Really? Their names sound kind of Western to me. . .

There are plenty of Eastern people with names that would make you think that. I had a friend from highschool who was from Cambodea (sp?), but his name was Michael.

More on this from Newsarama:

Ruwan Jayatilleke on X-Men & Wolverine Mangas

As we reported on Sunday, Marvel and Del Rey have entered into a relationship to produce Original English Language manga starring Wolverine and the X-Men. Beginning in early 2009, the volumes will be published in manga digest format, with Wolverine being written in a shonen style by Antony Johnston, (artist TBA) and X-Men to be written in a shojo style by Raina Telgemeier and Dave Roman with art by the Indonesian artist, Anzu.

We spoke with Marvel's Vice President of Development Ruwan Jayatilleke about the deal, while Del Rey supplied us with a sneak peek at the art.

Newsarama: To begin Ruwan, can you tell us how this deal came together, and why it makes sense for Marvel?

Ruwan Jayatilleke: The real but somewhat "fake" origin: Much to Dallas's (associate publisher of Del Rey, Middaugh) chagrin, I will tell this "story": In my mind, the origin of this deal all started at San Diego Comic Con 2005, where I first met Dallas at a Random House dinner where people would rotate from table to table with some uber-author talents and other random folks like myself. At that dinner was the attractive Amber Benson ("Tara" from Buffy) whose table I rooted myself for nearly the entire dinner, thereby preventing Dallas or anyone else from rotating in to meet her…much to his rage/frustration. Haha. Yes, I am a bastard!

What does this have to do with the manga deal? Well, I felt I owed Dallas a gigantic reparation (which was this manga deal) since I essentially c-blocked (chair blocked) him from meeting Amber who is sweet, awesome, sharp, etc. I am sure steam is now geyser-ing from Dallas's ears as he reads this. If it's any consolation to him and other fanboys, she had/has a boyfriend who was at the dinner, so all my subtle stalking/lingering was all for naught. Though I didn't get shot down because she's kind and polite and not because I have "game." Ack. Anyway, I definitely would place Amber Benson as the critical spark in making this deal happen even though she played no substantial part in it being brokered! However I am digressing…
