Cloverfield (Spoilers!)

Something about that makes me laugh...

Anyways I havn't seen this yet. But from the previews it kind of has a Blair Witch meets Godzilla feel to it... Anyone else get that feeling?

because Blair witch was over hyped and godzilla had a big monster?

No, it's like the Blair Witch because of the camera (unless that was a joke comment)

kinda was a joke but kinda wasn't as this is so over hyped i'm not watching it unless I happen to pick up the dvd someday

So what does the monster look like? I've heard descriptions like "Spider-like" and it "having tentacles". What the hell kind of monster is it?

Think Jiggly puff on steroids

:lol: :lol: ok I have no idea

It's humungous, big enough to decapitate the Statue of Liberty.

Thank you, Capt. Obvious.

:roll:

I saw a bit in the trailer, but it looked like the leg of a dinosaur. With people also saying its got tentacles and looks like a spider, I'm just trying to figure out the logistics of this thing's physical form. What the heck is it? Just some amalgamation of a bunch of monsters, or is it just a Godzilla rip-off in more than plot?

Dammit!

I love and hate the film. The entire time I was watching the film I was totally engrossed in everything that was going on. I could not wait to see what happened next. Even after the film ended, I was still stoked on my way to the car.

But then as a drove home, I began thinking about the film. And the more I thought about it...the more I hated the film. I hated how I could never really get a "firm" overall shot of the monster. I hated how the film ended, even though it was the only plausible ending. I hated how nothing is ever really explained.

But for everything I hated.....I loved something about it. I hated how I could never really see the monster the way I wanted, but I loved how they stayed faithful to the viewing format and never caved in and gave you your cinematic shot of the monster. I hated the ending, but I loved that it was so ambiguous and left it open to a sequel (even though it doesn't really need one). I hated that nothing was explained, but loved that the mystery of it all kept me so engaged and added to my tension.

I might have to sleep on it before I give it a final verdict. All I do know is that you all MUST....repeat MUST see this on the big screen to really expericence this.

It's sort of hard to explain... it's sort of a mix and match of lots of different things. Your best bet is to find a crappy photo/video someone has done with their phone... or, y'know, see the movie. :)

I agree with the sentiment that this needs to be seen on the big screen- there's not two ways about it.

Otherwise, I liked it well enough. It wasn't the best film I've ever seen, but it was far from bad. I don't think I'll ever see it again.

It was a nice, intense monster film- but it doesn't strike me as one with any replay value.
I didn't mind not knowing what was going on- that was the point of the film- but I hate it at the same time.
An okay film.

Oh yeah, I got cold chills from the post credits audio.
Is it worth sticking around for? I don't usually sit through the credits unless I know there's going to be something at the end.

Re: JJ Abrams' "Cloverfield"

First - go to www.1-18-08.com - check out the pics, you can flip them over by rolling the mouse over the pics. Not all of em have stuff on the back, but the important ones lead us to....

www.tagruato.jp
www.jamieandteddy.com (click on the pic for a prompt for a password, it is jllovesth)

Also, for a laugh, go to www.slusho.jp

The gist of it is that Tagruato is this evil corporation who is ultimately responsible for unleashing the MONSTER. They run Slusho. Slusho has a "secret ingredient" that makes people addicted to it (take note - Slusho! will be available at a store near YOU soon!). They call it "Sea Bed Nectar". They had an "oil drilling station" at Chuai in the Atlantic. It was shady. So this group called TIDOWave (www.TIDOWave.com) went there to check it out. But judging from the NEWS REPORT, it looks like it unleashed the MONSTER and got eaten (and then spit up)

Most of the viral sites seem to be being shut down. (Which makes sense, seeing as the film is released.)

Specifically, TIDOwave's site has been shut down for alleged terrorist actions at Chuai, Tagruato's site is shut down for maitinence, and at Jaime and Teddy, Jaime just announced she's going to a party...most likely the same party in the film.

Eh......

I've seen better.

But it was cool...but i wouldn't care to see it again.

I didn't even know there was anything at the end (which I guess is a con of first screenings) but it's everywhere on the internet now (I even posted a link to it in this thread). Besides, the audio you hear at the end has to be reversed before you can even understand it's message...

Saw it tonight. It sold out and we were lucky to get tickets, and we ended up sitting in the middle of the second row from the front, which was actually perfect.

It was really cool. Didn't seem very long, though, I could've easily taken another full hour.

I think the shot towards the end where Hut is face to face with the monster was really stupid and against the style of the rest of the movie. It just sneaks up on them from nowhere in the middle of Central Park, and then takes the time to observe and maul a single person. It was really just an excuse to see an close-up of the monster's face, but I don't think that was necessary. We had seen JUST the right amount up until then, very satisfying and still mysterious. Seeing that close and detailed, and focusing on one random person.... it made it seem smaller.

Having said that, the movie was mostly awesome. That first time you get a clear look at its face as it walks over the streets and roars right down at you for a second was the definition of movie magic. The thing was suspensful as heck and like I said, I could easily have taken another hour of it or more. I was loving it the whole time.

I was disappointed they killed off Marlena so early because I thought she was the best character and her interaction with Hut the most interesting part of the movie.

I also think the thing was kind of a cop-out, just a "let's do something really big and cool and mysterious and scary and show it in a cool way. Forget about a plot or explaination, experience will stand for itself!" kind of thing.... and it really did work to an extent, but I still wanted something more.

8 out of 10, and still well worth seeing on the big screen.

~~~
In other news, the kids who were sitting in front of us, a group of boys about 14 years old, actually left about halfway through, one of them saying he just "couldn't take this anymore" and the others going along with it. They all looked pretty shaken, but then again it could've been because they were in the front row. Anybody here see anything like that?
If it was the First row i can understand.....I've had huge neck pains becouse of sitting in the first row.
But no. I didn't see anyone walk out and leave.
We had a couple of people walk out during the 10:10 showing tonight. I almost threw up but I am prone to motion sickness so I spent a little bit of time when I knew it was just running looking at the ground. I think people who were expecting more from the film as far as bacl story and and what not were seeing the wrong movie. The point was that we know as much as some average people in New York. We are just is in the dark. The only thing I wish we did have was some sort of confirmation one way or the other after everything was said and done. I was kind of hoping for like a news report off to the side or something while the end credits rolled. something to give a little bit of an ending but it wasn't that big of a deal without it. I really like the film and it was a great concept but it isn't something I would see multiple times and isn't something I will own.
Holy ****
this movie was intense
thoroughly awesome, my only problem was the camera in some places (see: when people were running), and the monster singling out and mauling Hut really seemed pointless
did the maleyna (is that right) girl just blow up or was she shot?
this is one of the only movies that has actually managed to downright scare me, and i'm not afraid to say that
easily my favorite movie of 08 so far (well my only movie of 08 so far but still)
9.5/10
just wow
Hmmmmm. This is one of the few movies that I've actually had a lot to say about.
The easiest way to sum it up was that it was a brilliant concept with likeable characters and good dialog. . .with a very unnecessary story. I'm glad I saw it, and cannot stress enough that it needs to be seen on the big screen, but I have no desire to see it again. Or a sequel, for that matter.
Going into it, I knew I was going to hate the camera work, so I can't really complain about it. Fundamentally, I think the idea is brilliant, but, in practice, I think it does more harm then good for the viewer, especially if you're prone to motion sickness.
As for the characters and story, I felt all of the main characters were very likable and I felt for them every step of the way. However, the plot line of the group going to save Beth was incredibly stupid. It's somewhat understandable for Rob to go back to save Beth, but for Hud, Marlena, and Lilly to follow him was a bit unbelievable. As for the Monster, I'm going to agree with Planet-Man. I really liked how they gave you glimpses of it from various angles, but the scene with Hud in Central Park and the Monster was ridiculous. Overall, though, I was satisfied with the Monster.
So, I was generally satisfied with the movie. The concept was brilliant, even if the execution left a little to be desired (Not terrible, by any means, but it could have been tightened). It should definitely be seen at least once.
