Actually, I am going to make one amendment to my post.
Blu-Ray is a leap forward in technology. Specifically, as a storage format. 60GB is a HUGE amount of space for removable storage, especially compared to the paltry DVD9. And I'm a sucker for space. I'd love to get my hands on an affordable Blu-Ray Reader/Writer to go along with my Terrabyte HD.
However, for movies, it isn't doing much. Yes, the quality is a little better, but it just isn't worth it. Hence why I'm hesitant to make the switch as a media format. HD Digital Distribution is, in my opinion, the way media is headed and Blu-Ray is just an intermediate format.
Actually, it's good for video games, too. Now that the PS3 is at a more affordable price, we can see truly large, uncompressed games with beautiful graphics and crystal clear sound. . .if the companies are willing to shell out the very large amount of cash to produce such games. This is also if video games don't make the switch to DD as well. And with things like Xbox Arcade, the Playstation Network, and the Virtual Console/WiiWare all doing incredibly well, that very well may be the case.

I would be surprised if the next generation of systems aren't all digital distribution.
And if the video game industry latches on to that concept, you better believe that Hollywood will follow suit as quickly as possible.

I'm not so sure about the next generation, but surely the one after. We'll definitely see the makings of it next gen, though, especially from Microsoft and, likely after the debacle that was the first year of the PS3, Sony, too. Nintendo has always been slow on the uptake when it comes to the Internet, though, but we'll see.
Except it's NOT just a little better quality , I even went through some features in here that you just can not do on dvds , Stuff that showed it was more than just quality like people mentioned but it was ignored.
No offence but people keep saying it's not worth it , it's just quality ect... proves how ignorant they are to the fact it's NOT just quality , it's new stuff that actually makes the leap from dvd to bluray huge and the fact this is just the beginning is right.
Like skotti said it's just technology evolving , It's happened before and it'll most likely happen again , People to except it.

The format war is over. Blu-Ray wins. According to sources from Toshiba (who was the main part behind HD-DVD) the HD-DVD standard has been put on ice. This in principle means that Toshiba will not support the format anymore but other companies might. In the long run however, the HD-DVD standard will likely be dead and gone within 1-2 years.
Now we just have to wait and see what kind of new, and better, standards that will try to take over the market. According to rumours the next generation of movie formats is just behind the horizon.

Yeah I heard that on the radio this morning....sucks to be E. I think it was all set off by Warner Bros pulling out though
I think the thing was HD-DVD had more features to start with, but now they can do all the same things on Blu-ray.

yay, good.
not that i'm a real blu-ray booster, since i am yet to buy a blu-ray disc and i've had my ps3 for a little over a year, I am glad to stick with DVD's as long as I have too until they are obselete
but once they are obselete I already have a Blu-Ray player in my PS3 so i don't need to drop another couple hundred bucks to play movies

What does this mean for microsoft? XboX 360 vs PS3 ? - and will microsoft be able to use Blu-ray in the future?
Will ps3 sales increase?

If I had to guess:
Ps3 sales will most likely increase
360 will get that blu ray add on rumoured at a while back
360 is the console selling the least at the moment (according to ign's sale figures) anyway this will hurt it more

I don't think its going to affect the 360 one way or the other. HD-DVD ever was a big selling point for the 360 anyways.
I think, in the long run, it'll be very beneficial to the PS3. But, not until the PS3 starts beating the 360 in sales on a month-to-month basis.
Oh I know it wasn't but I know a few people who were waiting to see which format won to get a player. Now Blu Ray has won and ps3 is cheapest blu ray play they'll buy that. It'll make ps3 sell more.
but also the people undecided between the two systems eg Me! I was thinking then I decided blu ray was going to win before that news came out as it seemed obvious and decided end of year to get a ps3.
Does that make sense?

Honestly though, I'm a little indifferent to the HD formats mostly because most Filipinos don't have screens big enough to justify them. Hell, not even the local cable provider broadcasts in HD.
It's just because you HAVE to have little tvs in case of Godzilla attack you can grab it and run with ease
