Anyone else read the new Original Graphic Novel by Brian Azzarello? It basically follows the Joker after he is freed from Arkham, they never go into detail as to why. This Joker is pretty much inspired by The Dark Knight Joker, appearance and all.

I must say I liked it pretty good. I liked the other slightly different versions of the some of the villains like Croc, Harley, and The Riddler.

I suggest picking it up.

I remember when this series was first mentioned a while back and Bermejo told Wizard that he "came up with this Joker's look way before Heath Ledger was even involved with The Dark Knight or before the movie was even announced." I'm obviously paraphrasing there, and it is true that he's been working on the series since 2006, but my point is, why would it even matter (about the credit for this Joker's design)? I thought it kinda made Bermejo look like a prick because it was the January 2008 issue of Wizard, and Ledger obviously ended up dying at the end of that month.

IGN has some pretty good interviews with both creators. IGN is really heaping praise upon it. I'm pretty excited to go pick it up sometime soon.

Azzarello and Bermejo

There's also links to their reviews and preview art.

I really like their take on The Riddler.

I have it but haven't read it yet. I didn't really care for Lex Luthor: Man of Steel but this looks interesting. I don't like that The Joker was just let out though... it's really stupid.

Definitely picking this up....

How much was it?

It was very good. Aside from the obvious stupid idea that begins the whole thing (Joker just randomly deciding he's not crazy and being let out of Arkham - no prison or execution?) the rest was great. I liked the different interpretations of the characters - scary, modern, realistic versions... that I could see in a Nolan movie. It's incredibly strange how likely this Joker is to the Ledger one, especially the appearance. What the **** was up with Joker calling Penguin Abner the whole time? Was he doing that just to annoy him?

And man, The Joker really loves shrimp.

Ledger never claimed to have come up with the "look" of the TDK Joker, nor was it ever part of his job. That was Lindy Hemmings, the costume designer. Actually, the Dark Knight team never claimed the design was original and Never Before Done Anywhere Else

Granted, Bermejo is probably just trying to stave off the inevitable obnoxio remarks about how "OMG just like TDK," but there are much more polite ways of saying that in an interview.

"IGN Comics: Naturally the first thing many fans will notice is the similarity between your Joker and Heath Ledger's in the Dark Knight. Was that simply happy coincidence, or did the film begin to affect what you and Brian Azzarello were doing?

Bermejo
: Definitely a coincidence. I certainly don't want to take anything away from Nolan or Ledger, they did something spectacular and iconic with the character, but the reality of this particular situation is simple: Brian and I were already well into this graphic novel when they released the first photo of Ledger. In fact, I was drawing the sequence where Joker walks into the Italian restaurant. I admit, I freaked out when I saw the photo. I immediately called Brian, and I remember he was like, "It doesn't really look anything like your Joker." I still feel like all they really have in common is the carved smile.

Honestly, the only thing i can tell you I know for sure is that my version of the Joker, the way you see him in this book, was established long before Ledger was even cast. Just to be clear, this is not to say that Nolan and Co. were informed by my drawing. I've said this before and I really find it to be true, that certain ideas float around at the same time for a reason. Pop culture, social tendencies, fashion, you name it. If you want to do a realistic interpretation of the Joker, there are only a few ways to do it."

That doesn't seem very impolite to me.

If you're referring to my original post, I never explicitly stated that Ledger claimed he came up with that Joker's look. You must have mis-read. And I said it doesn't matter who came up with the design, it just made Bermejo look like an ******* since that was the issue printed right before Ledger's death.

But whatever, I have nothing against him or his artwork and again, I'm definitely picking this up.

How does this make Bermejo look bad though? It was said BEFORE LEDGER DIED.

I don't understand your issue here.

I never said that that's what you said.

I was merely saying Ledger, nor anyone else on the TDK team, never made that claim.

Well, seeing the IGN piece, well then yes, it's clear he wasn't being impolite at all.

Also, I really really really like Bermejo. You must all read Lex Luthor: Man of Steel.

If I made an erratic statement about someone in an interview, and that 'someone' ended up dying a few weeks later, I'd feel like a major prick; moreover, I would feel guilty/remorseful, even though I know I wasn't the direct cause of that person's death. I'd have a guilty conscience, it's part of human nature. And since Bermejo did exactly this, he looks bad in my opinion. That's all I'm saying, that's just my opinion.

*sigh* I know, but there's also something that stated clearly in the first sentence of the post that you quoted: "If you're referring to my original post...." So that only applied to you if you were in fact referring to my original post.

I thought this was a pretty cool comic, but it showed almost everyone but Poison Ivy.
