Newly confirmed director Shane Black reportedly discussed the movie at the Omaha Film Festival. There are no direct quotes — so take all of this with a grain of salt until we get some sort of more official confirmation, but the initial reports are intriguing. Black reportedly confirmed that he is writing the script, and that this movie will do away with the already tired element of two men in metal suits fighting each other which we saw in the first two films. In fact, Black supposedly likened this third movie to Tom Clancy movies like Patriot Games or Clear and Present Danger, saying Iron Man will take on real world - or at least, more realistic - villains this time around. Black also reportedly stated that there will be no other superheroes in the movie, and the crossover elements will be confined to The Avengers movie(s) from here on out. Again, none of this should be considered official until we get some corroborating sources, but honestly...so far, I like where this is going.

I agree with io9, this sounds intriguing. Particularly the removal of crossover elements. Shane Black is responsible for some nice movies like LETHAL WEAPON and KISS KISS BANG BANG.

The only thing that worries me is the potential lack of a supervillain simply because the problem with the LETHAL WEAPON movies is that (with the exception of Jet Li) they all suffered from a lack of a good villain. On the other hand, the movie might be more introspective and not require one. We'll see.

Possibly Demon in a bottle playing a role?

Oooh, nice thinking considering the crazyness of Mel Gibson's character in LETHAL WEAPON. Maybe it'll be a good fit!

Diplomatic Immunity

I love how you say this without any context of any kind, yet I totally get it and laugh.

Kind of a cop-out that they're abandoning the crossover stuff once after embracing it so rabidly. I mean...what else does Iron Man even have as a franchise? RDj opening and closing his suit jackets and talking really fast?

That being said, I like that they're actually attempting a plot this time around. I'd really like to see them do Demon in a Bottle; at least a heavily adapted variation of it. That's the only story they could really tell with a real 'oomph' factor, after The Avengers.

Marvel always seem to be taking one step forward but then two steps back again. They hire Shane Black, one of the best action film writers ever, to direct Iron Man 3. Then for some reason, they hire the guy who created No Heroics to write it. Why? You've got Shane Black already! It doesn't make sense!

I sincerely hope the villain will be Mr Unioshi.

Of course he's a racist caricature. He's called the Mandarin, for Chrissakes!

Well Mandarin does have his fans and I believe some of them would argue otherwise.

The thing is though, it would be easy to write a movie around Mandarin, because they have already had a bit of build up for him, with the "Ten Rings" group being the ones who kidnapped Tony in the first movie. The problem is the Mandarin is essential Iron Man's arch nemesis in the comics and he has this stigma to him. That and introducing his magic rings could be tricky.

I thought in one story his rings were linked to alien technology. You could link that to the alien presence set to appear in the Avengers.

I love MURDER BY DEATH. It's one of my all-time faves. I kinda want to watch it right now.

+1

Peter Sellers was one of the best actors of his day. Period, end of sentence. Murder by Death is one of my all time favorite movies.

I have to kind of disagree with Shane Black, while yes The Mandarin started as a Yellow Menace! character, but writers like Joe Casey have been able to make him not only a credible threat, but make him less of a flaming racist caricature.

Also, "The Mandarin" isn't necessarily racist in itself, unless you see someone calling himself "The Bureaucrat" as racist.

I don't know a lot about the character or Iron Man comics, but it seems that it wouldn't be that hard to do the character onscreen without his more stereotypical traits.

I like the idea of making it a "Demon in a Bottle" story. Maybe they combine that with Armor Wars, in order to raise the stakes a little and explore the arms race themes that have been building through the films.

As for the talk about the Mandarin: I really don't know much about him, and if he does turn out to be the main villain, he'll probably be fine, but I'm not entirely sure a choice of villain matters much. The last film had Whiplash as the main antagonist. Sure, he borrowed several elements from Crimson Dynamo, but they made him a credible threat. If they can do that, I do not think that they need to add Iron Man's archenemy when they can use any of Iron Man's other foes. And besides, if they did use him, the Mandarin would have to get an overhaul, in order to avoid the racial implications and the alien rings weirdness. (Though they could probably tie the latter into the Guardians of the Galaxy film, but I digress.)

There is one tragedy to this, however: since this is apparently going to be a more introspective film, it is very, very unlikely that we will be seeing FIN FANG FOOM!
