Marvel planning 'Guardians of the Galaxy' pic
Time-traveling, interstellar group would launch in May 2014
By MARC GRASER

Marvel Studios is ready to assemble its next group of superheroes for the bigscreen: The Guardians of the Galaxy.
The Disney division is expected to announce a "Guardians" film as its next tentpole that would launch a new set of characters on May 16, 2014. Studio had previously planted a flag on that date for an untitled Marvel pic.

The Guardians are aliens in the 31st century -- each the last of their kind -- who travel back in time to enlist help to battle the Badoon, an evil alien race that attempts to conquer Earth's solar system. First introduced in 1969 and again in 2008, the newer set includes Star-Lord, Drax, gun-toting Rocket Raccoon and Groot, a tree. Characters were recently featured in an episode of the animated series "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes."

In the comicbooks, the characters have crossed over into the "The Avengers" universe, making them fit in easily with Marvel's bigscreen plans to expand the superhero franchise -- as would Ant-Man, another Avenger. And like its other Marvel properties, Disney can exploit the Guardians across all of the Mouse House's divisions as TV shows, videogames, consumer products and possibly theme park attractions.

Nicole Perlman, who came out of Disney's screenwriting program, penned a version of the script that Marvel has been high on.

While Marvel will focus much of its Comic-Con presentation on "Iron Man 3," lensing now in North Carolina under the direction of Shane Black, the company will spend some time highlighting how it plans to introduce new characters to auds the way it did with Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America. Session wraps up Hollywood's film panels on July 14.

The website Latino Review first reported Marvel's plan to announce a Guardians pic at Comic-Con. Marvel declined to comment, although sources confirm to Variety that Disney and Marvel are zeroing in on the project, rather than a standalone Black Panther project at this point.

Marvel topper Kevin Feige has long discussed the possibility of a Guardians film, wanting to produce a big-budget space adventure. And Disney recently secured trademark rights to produce an array of consumer products tied to the pic and its characters.

Guardians of the Galaxy is among several new properties Marvel is looking to launch as films, along with Ant-Man, Dr. Strange, The Inhumans, while Black Panther also is being tackled by scribes. Edgar Wright recently shot test footage for "Ant-Man," about a scientist who can change his size and communicate with insects. Project, which he co-wrote with Joe Cornish, has long been in development and discussed at Comic-Con in previous years.

Marvel and Disney's next superhero outing is "Iron Man 3," skedded for May 3, 2013, to be followed by "Thor 2" (Nov. 15, 2013) and "Captain America 2 (April 4th, 2014). Disney already has said an "Avengers" sequel is in the works, most likely for 2015, although no date has yet been set.

I heard instead of using CGI, Rocket Raccoon is just going to be Gilbert Gottfried in a furry costume.

It's all rumors and nothings confirmed, but James Gunn (Slither, Super) is the frontrunner to direct. And he's said he like to cast Nathan Fillion (who he worked with on Slither--it's an awesome movie I'd you've never seen it) as Star Lord.

I can definitely give my vote to that idea. I (and many others) have hoped for a role for Fillion in the MCU ever since Joss Whedon coming into the verse with Avengers. Some have speculated he'd be a good choice for Ant-Man, but apparently Fillion isn't interested in playing Hank Pym. Star Lord seems like a good role for him, since he's already got the space captain acting chops and ability to bring both drama and humor to his roles (and humor will be a big element of GotG--one of the reasons it's being rewritten is to add a bit more humor to the script).

Fillion would be good not because he was a space captain, but because he can portray the forced leadership that Starlord has been given, the humor or Starlord, as well as the genuine hurt that Starlord has for being such a screw up in the past. The weight he feels everytime he makes a decision that could cost people lives.

Fillion would be good because he'd be Fillion. 'Nuff said.

I honestly know nothing about the character, but have plenty of faith in the Nate's ability to do it justice.

Jim Carrey And Adam Sandler Reportedly Eyed For Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy

Here is what I know so far on Guardians Of The Galaxy, first off, the search for Peter Quill aka Starlord continues. Peter Quill is the half-human, half-alien hero who was made the leader of the latest iteration of the Guardians when it launched in 2008.

Remember back around Thanksgiving when Mike Fleming over at Deadline dropped a list of names in contention?

According to my sources, you can add Wes Bentley, Chris Lowell, and Cam Gigandet to the latest crop of actors reading for the role. Keep in mind I said reading, they didn't get no offers yet.

But here is the kicker. Marvel is going after some big comedic actors perhaps for some comedic relief in the movie. Exactly how big?

Marvel is asking for the availability of both Jim Carrey AND Adam Sandler!

For what roles, I'm not sure. Maybe Rocket or Groot? Jim Carrey I can see since he is already playing Colonel Stars & Stripes in Kick Ass 2, but Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) in a Marvel movie?!

According to Deadline, Chris Pratt (Parks & Rec, Zero Dark Thirty, Moneyball) is going to be Peter Quill/Starlord.

I finally started reading this series. I'm only a couple of issues in so far, but it's really really fun. I'm not sure how they're going to sell this movie to the general population, but I'm excited for it now!

I think it can be done, and pretty effectively. I would do it as a Star Wars-esque space opera kind of thing. I just re-read the two Annihilation minis and they have a lot of everything.

Chris Pratt is an interesting choice. I think I can see it.

Chris Pratt is the best. He's going to be a huge star.

And sorry about that. My phone now decided to upload.all of your guys' posts about that.

Either way I'm excited On that choice
