The Music Thread : It's So Easy To Fly Through A Window

Ah, I hadn't realized that Bruce Springsteen hasn't crossed over into snobby music elitist appreciation territory yet. My mistake.

If you can't listen to The Rising or Nebraska without a permanent chill running down your spine you need to retire from listening to music.

"Like"

Just bought tickets for my 19th and 20th show. 19 will be at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia and then I'm flying to Chicago for my 20th time at Wrigley Field.

I also bought tickets to see Fun. and Of Monsters and Men. (Which isn't like me at all.)

I encourage everyone to listen to a band called Cheers Elephant
. They're out of Philadelphia.

The new Smashing Pumpkins album Oceania is very good. It sounds a lot like Gish-era Pumpkins. Much, much, much better than Zeitgeist and a good chunk of the stuff on the Teargarden EPs.

that's not a very helpful hint... that could mean anything.

Yeah, the only "me" I know is me, and I'm not going.

This is so awesome. I don't think Prince gets his due for his guitar skills but he's amazing in this video.

I went and saw Metric in Vegas a few days ago and it was incredible. Some of you might know them as the band that did the music for Envy's band in Scott Pilgrim.

The new album by The Heavy, 'The Glorious Dead', is pretty great.

I've also been listening to Wasted Light by Foo Fighters quite a bit.

The new Mountain Goats and Muse albums are pretty good

I like the new Fiona Apple album.

I was really excited about King Animal by Soundgarden but it is just OK...I was hoping for something as great as Superunknown (all-time top 10 album right there) or even Down On The Upside.

I heard At Last by Etta James at a wedding the other day and have been listening to that album a little.

Albums I've listened to but couldn't really get into: Psychedelic Pill by Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Push and Shove by No Doubt, Music From Another Dimension by Aerosmith, GOOD Music Cruel Summer.

Good music I've been listening to lately:

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Lana Del Rey - Born To Die
Beyonce - 4
Girls - Album

4 is one of the best R&B albums I've ever heard.

My wife got me an iPod Classic for my birthday so I've been loading it up with everything I have and everything I can find.

You know what I hate about itunes... Some songs you have to buy the whole album to get. If the song you're looking for is on one of those "Now that's What I Call Music" or a some soundtracks. You'll have to buy the whole album just to get one or two, or possible three songs. And the rest are either song you have or don't want.

Man, who knew you had good taste in music? It's strange, because I've been on a huge Arcade Fire kick after not having listened to them in a couple years. I also got turned on to Girls recently, and while they didn't exactly blow me away, they're a pretty damn solid group.

I'm going to see Tame Impala in a couple months! I'm hyped.

Also, who needs iTunes when there's Spotify?

I have a very wide range of tastes in music. There's not a genre that I can say I don't like, except maybe free jazz or modern country.

Lately...I like the new Strokes album but its not as good as Angles. The new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club album is disappointing.

But the new Marnie Stern album is great! I'm really enjoying it. She has one of the most unique styles I've ever heard.

I'm burnt out on the Strokes, ditto BRMC.

And I don't know who Marnie Stern is.

The new Black Moth Super Rainbow is stellar, though.

Major Pitchfork darling, but I like her anyway.

I hate when people say dumb stuff like this, so let me try that again.

Marnie Stern is a singer/songwriter/guitarist who is notable for a fast tapping style of playing. She is one of the most technically good guitarists out there today, but that's not what makes her music good, obviously. She has a unique knack for matching up accompanying vocals with the guitar work, and her voice is as much of an instrument as the guitar. It's a very different and unique sound; I don't think I've ever heard anything like it. And her music is extremely catchy - as good of a guitarist as she is technically, she has really good pop sensibilities.

I tried to find an online stream of the new album but didn't see anything, so the best I can do is the clips from Amazon's page for the album.

Her previous album (self-titled) was just ok but the one before that is called This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That and is phenomenal.

I've changed my mind about The Strokes 'Comedown Machine'. One day it just clicked with me and I love it now.

Sometimes it just takes me a few listens to an album before I get it. Arcade Fire's 'The Suburbs' was like that for me.
