This is never happening, is it?

I think there were a lot of hurdles to get through (having to do with Alan Davis if I understood correctly) that they need to work out before they can reprint anything. And if they are letting Gaiman continue his run they might be at his mercy. With all that's going on with American Gods I doubt this is high on his priority list.

On the subject about Marvelman, from today's Cup O' Joe Panel at NYCC:

"The perennial question about new stories for Miracleman/Marvelman received the standard response that things are in the works, but no hard news was announced. Buckley said, "I will give as much as I can give...there's a lot of very complicated things to navigate to ensure that every creator involved in said property [can be taken care of properly.]" He added, "If we're going to do it, we're going to do it right, and we're not going to have anybody questioning what we're doing."

The ironic thing about this quote and his stance is that, unfortunately time is running out for Mick Anglo and his wife, who as I recall were both quite sick and as I remember there was a lot made of the Marvel deal being able to help them with medical bills.

Re: Marvel to Publish Marvelman!

On a whim, I picked up the first two Marvel Marvelman hardcovers (Marvelman Classic and Marvelman Family's Finest). My son was asking about Miracleman so I picked these up so he could see.

The Marvelman Classic one is more like a graphic novel as they've traditionally been described, not made up of already-released issues (at least as far as I can tell). It is actually the first 6 or so appearances of Marvelman. Marvelman Family's Finest was a 6-issue series full of random reprints from a few months ago. The format is weird by Marvel's standards - they are sort of like newsprint and the hardcovers have full color printing - no dust jackets, like the Scarlet hardcover.

I got them for about $6 each and they aren't too bad for that price. I was amazed to see that the cover price on each is $35. Who in the world would seriously pay $35 for these?! I can't believe anyone did. They are interesting for their historical value (and the extras are pretty good) but $35?! Unreal. No wonder they are being liquidated.

And there are more in the pipeline. I didn't look, but I assume that they will also be $35 each. This is one reason why Marvel is so stupid. If no one bought the first ones (some guestwork here but that's based on them being liquidated, which is true), what makes them think subsequent ones would go for the same (or close to the same) price? Furthermore, who would buy them if it's been established that they can be easily bought at liquidation prices just a few months after they are released?

I'll probably get the rest that come out, but not new and certainly not for $35 each.

Re: Marvel to Publish Marvelman!

Also, I was just thinking that I bet part of the deal made with the Anglo reps include reprinting a certaim amount of the old books. So they are probably contractually obligated to keep printing these books even though no one is going to buy them.

I also like this blurb from the back of the Marvelman Classic book: "If you only know him from his dark, deconstructionist eighties revival, then you don't know Marvelman!" I guess that is pretty accurate but it still sounds funny to me.

Big news? "Wait Six Months Until Marvelman"

At FablesCon this weekend, one Little Bleeder found himself chatting with Fables co-creator Mark Buckingham in the Kill Shakespeare bar.

The Angela news had hit, and people were talking about the possible return of Marvelman/Miracleman with Neil Gaiman and Buckingham at Marvel. So our Little Bleeder asked him.

Mark's replied "wait six months". When asked if he would go back to draw again, he replied "Oh yes. I'd have to take some time off from Fables but yes."

Our Little Bleeder had a busy weekend. More to come.

Re: Marvel to Publish Marvelman!

Marvelman is Ultron.

Marvel to Publish Marvelman!

We are never going to see those damn Alan Moore issues reprinted until they're in the public domain.

Mark Buckingham clarified his quote: he basically says this to everyone who asks and has said it basically for the last 3 years, since Marvel announced they bought the character. He also said that he found out about the acquisition when Marvel announced it.

Marvelman is Ultron.

We find out who Ultron is in Age of Ultron 3.

Re: Marvel to Publish Marvelman!

Wait...Ultron isn't Ultron? I'm lost. Of course I haven't read many Marvel comics outside the occasional Ultimate title catch-up for the timeline.

One of the heroes (I can't remember who - I forgot already because this is already forgettable) goes into Ultron's main city to confront Ultron and finds that
it's actually Vision who (seems to be) running everything
.

Nothing earth-shattering in that spoiler and likely a red herring but a spoiler in a book which is off-topic nonetheless.

Back on topic...

Can you blame me? That comic is excellent.

True, I really can't. It's why I know you're uber excited for Marvel having received the rights so they can bastardize it and have Miracleman appear in a gajillion comics and crossovers. He's going to be like the new Wolverine.

I know you're really looking forward to the Miracleman vs. Deadpool comic.

Funny to think that this will almost certainly happen. After a few years they will have some hack writing the character, ruining it with stupid ideas and forced integration and team ups. It's funny because the character is untouchable and mythical right now. They are being so careful with rights and not upsetting the apple cart as far as permissions with past creators go, and in a few short years it will mean nothing because with crappy gimmicks they will suck all of the life and value out of the character.

Change Deadpool to Venom (original) and I'd buy that!
