Evil Dead - Timeline

"There's direct connectivity between what happens in this story and the others. They're in the same world – this is not a parallel universe in any way. It's happening after Fede's movie, and after Sam's, but in a world where those stories have taken place."

"The book that's in this story is connected back to the past," he continues. "If we look at Army of Darkness, and at the fact that there's three books: Sam used one, Fede used one, and I said, 'Y'know what, give me the third one, and let me go tell an Evil Dead story in that context."

Based on the fact that Evil Dead Rise doesn't reference Kandar or the world-wide Deadite attack from 2018, it might be placed before that point. It's confirmed to occur after the fourth film, so 2013-2018.

It could be 2021-2023 if there's any suggestions in the film though. It wouldn't be preferable but it's totally possible as we've seen similar things go unreferenced in other fictional worlds too.

"Giving you a really candid answer, I intentionally didn't pay any heed to the television series, even though I'm a big fan of it and a big fan of everything," Cronin confirmed with ComicBook.com. "I really was just looking at the canon within the movies, that's where my focus was. From that point of view, it's not impossible equally that the story in Ash vs. Evil Dead is taking place somewhere else without an awareness in terms of my story. For me, it's actually quite simple, and I went to Sam Raimi and said, 'There's three books as shown in Army of Darkness. You've used one book, [Evil Dead 2013 director] Fede [Álvarez] used one book. I'm going to take the third book and open up that other avenue.' Sam really liked that idea because at least it drew a line between the existence of this third book and its appearance in this story in Evil Dead Rise back in time. So there is that connection there."

"I look at it in terms of Sam's movies, you've got 1 and 2 followed by 3, which is back in time but on that same stretch of timeline. Then you jump forward to 10 years ago, you've got Fede's movie and then you jump another 10 years forward and you've got this movie. So to me, they're in a straight line, and it's referenced in the movie by the priest, Littleton, on the vinyl and his awareness that they found one of the three Books of the Dead. They're aware of the lore, but this particular book, we don't know where it's appeared in the past and it's certainly been locked away for many, many years until this point in time when it appears post-earthquake and when Danny uncovers it. So to me, it's happening not alongside, it's just happening in the here and now, but everything that's happened before could also have happened and taken place."

So, sounds like it's set in 2023. They chose not to reference Ash vs Evil Dead because they were focusing on movie canon.

Evil Dead Rise Spoilers
"It's called 'the Book of the Dead' for a reason!" - Ash Williams

Somehow, Ash ends up in 1923. Maybe Evil Dead: The Game could explain this at some point?

Lee Cronin: "Bruce came over to Ireland when we were working on the sound and I asked him if he would do this teeny, tiny, little cameo for me. And the fun part is, that's not necessarily Bruce Campbell playing someone else – that could very well be Ash Williams."

Ash Williams Time Travel
1982-1300
1300-1982/2095?
2016-1982
1982-2016
2018-2095?
2095-1923

It's a head-canon unofficial thing, but Vivian Johnson's actress appears in Evil Dead. If we pretend they're the same character, then it supports Ash vs Evil Dead being set after, at least, the prologue of Evil Dead.

Perhaps she was watching over Ash. She seemed to be familiar with the book.

I mean it is not unlikely that it is the same character BUT we would need to ask people involved for a confirmation

Interesting. Sounds like this comic is reconciling both Army of Darkness endings as part of the same universe.

1300 - Past
1993 - Present
2093 - Future

One interesting element to mention, though...

-Evil Dead I-II take place in 1982 in the main canon.
-Army of Darkness released in 1992.
-The present day in this comic is allegedly 1993.

Don't know why they went with that. It's possible Ash travelled forward 11 years after the first two films, but of course that would screw his actual age. Regardless, I'm interested to see what connections are made from this as a standalone comic first. Maybe he returned in 1982, lived out 11 years of his life and then the S-Mart scene places out.

"Picking up immediately after the events of Army of Darkness (the Director's Cut, natch), Ash chainsaws his way through the Techno Army of Darkness in 2093 and defends the sacred aisles of the S-Mart in 1993! (What? How!?) Meanwhile, in the distant past, his lady love Sheila fights off a rising evil at Castle Kandar!"

2093 story (Director's Cut: Post-apocalypse)
1993 story (Theatrical Cut: preventing the apocalypse)
1300 story (Sheila story)

Just a guess.

Updated. My personal assumption is that Ash returned to 1982 but lived 11 years to 1993, with the Army of Darkness theatrical ending, and they're just retconning the scars on his face.

That, or they're retconning Bad Ash to be the 1993 Ash?

His dream is for it to be the accepted canon that you can slide between Army of Darkness and Ash vs Evil Dead, so it probably sorts itself out, timeline-wize? That's definitely interesting considering that the 1993 plot is a huge retcon, but maybe there's more to it than the first two issues imply.

By the way, should I include the non-canon recap stuff and Evil Dead 2 ending or does that just make things too confusing? I'll still mention that they're false memories Ash has but they didn't technically happen.
Put them in the watching order, but not on the timeline.

Two episodes of Freddy's Nightmares are set in the past and completely contradict the flashbacks in the films and comics, so that's gonna be an interesting addition when I do everything else. Apparently it is canon, so... that's annoying.

I saw that episode. The best thing I liked, Is that we won't see Freddy's face, until his Transformation.

It's a good episode for sure. Just complicated trying to fit it with the films. Maybe I can use Evil Dead as an excuse, lol. It's like the Evil Dead 2 prologue and epilogue. It's either the events misremembered or alternate timeline events.

There is a reference to Sugarbaby in FvJvA, so I guess she exists in the main continuity. Ash also states he's been working in retail for only 10 years. Perhaps he took a break.

Obviously it was intended to take place in the Dynamite Comics Universe, and still does, but the distinction for not having the second series be canon for FvJ creates the possibility to use the Evil Dead film timeline. It works since the first FvJvA is based on an actual sequel script I believe.

Either way there's gonna be two timelines with FvJvA in it since The Nightmare Warriors completely contradicts Nightmares on Elm Street (comic), not to mention breaks the chronology by having two sexually active teenagers together who should be prepubescent children based on the films.
