I had posted about this in all about video games thread but now theres more info I wanted to create a thread for it.

Warner Bros announced a new Mortal Kombat is in development for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Set for release in 2011, the new title will feature an all-new graphics engine, the return of brutal fatalities, and a "reinvention" of its classic 2D fighting mechanic. Long-time series creator Ed Boon once again returns to lead his team at his newly re-named NetherRealm Studios in Chicago.

"We can't wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat," said Boon. "This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!"

The game will also include new features, such as a 4-player tag-team mode where players battle in teams of two against each other online. Fans can also enjoy the "deepest story mode of any fighting game" and an "extensive" lineup of the series' iconic characters.

Personally I think this looks great also :D reptile = human looking as opposed to the lizard version. I think the modeles = Mortal Kombat Armageddon models just tweaked. I could be wrong but alot look similar.

But still this could be great as 2D Mortal Kombat's were much better than the 3D ones. Plus the fatalities in trailer look cool.

If everyone's jump kicks and punches are still going to look identical, count me out.

I would like to see some variation in fighting styles, not just specials.

This looks like unfinished product to me.

It may be. Chances are at E3 they are showing off what they have so far. Final product = more polished and worked on. Plus i find it incredibly coincidental that they announced it and showed footage like 2-3 days after Rebirth trailer hit and interest in franchise sparked up more.

New preview.

On the story

"Mortal Kombat has this timeline - eighteen years of making games, and we really didn't want to just continue, like, chapter seventeen of the whole story," says Ed Boon, the co-creator of the series. "So we're kind of doing a Back to the Future type of thing, where Raiden is about to be killed by Shao Kahn, and just before he delivers the last blow, he sends a mental message to his earlier self, so the camera rewinds back to Mortal Kombat 1. The Raiden from back then gets a message and he doesn't know what's going on, but he knows something bad's going to happen, and the game spans Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and 3, retelling the story with an enlightened Raiden, and he's changing the course of things, so everything you've seen happen before – Liu Kang winning, the guys turning into cybernetic ninjas, are changed around, so you might see a character become cybernetic who wasn't before, and so you see a different version [of events]."

I love this idea!

Gameplay :

"The fundamental fighting mechanics are based on custom combos," says Ed Boon, the co-creator of the series. "We want to do as little of the pre-programmed combos in the game as possible, and let players take pieces A, B and C and piece them together themselves. And when you add the whole tag team thing, with other characters coming in, all of a sudden there's new variables to mess with. We just want to create this huge palette and let players connect the dots. And that's our mission, with every single feature in the game, the X-Ray moves, all the specials and enhanced specials, they're all built around just adding variables to what the player has to work with."

Powering the gameplay system is a Super meter that functions much as you'd expect. It's a three segment bar, and different moves use different numbers of segments. An enhanced special, for instance, uses a single segment. Enhancing a super basically gives it more oomph. Reptile's slimy green projectile gets much larger, while Kung Lao's spinning hat changes from horizontal to vertical, embedding itself in his opponent's chest.

Of course, the real jewel in the crown of the Super system is that when it's full you have the chance to do an 'X-Ray attack' (this may not be the final name by the way – it's mostly descriptive at this point), where your character does a sequence of devastating slow motion punches and/or kicks, and the impacts are shown in x-ray vision. Y'know, so you can see the bones shatter.

Graphics :
Mortal Kombat runs on a heavily modified version of the Unreal Engine 3, and the action sits at a silky smooth 60 frames per second. Characters are huge and detailed, the animations flow really well, and the stages are quite spectacular. We particularly like the Coliseum-style arena, where a huge crowd of people are cheering from the stands, and a demonic figure surveys the fight from a throne formed from a massive horned skull.

There are plenty of small touches that show the team is going the extra yards. For instance, yes there's lots of blood, but this blood actually has a physical presence in the world, spraying onto characters and bloodying them up. It's a small touch, but we like. Characters also take damage, so even if you win, chances are one of your eyes will be popping out of your head or your jaw will be smashed off.

And then there's the internal modeling. Yes, the team have modeled each character's insides for the X-Ray attacks, and the result looks great. Because hey, when Johnny Cage goes to town on an opponent's bathing suit area (an actual move), or Sub Zero reaches into an enemy's chest to freeze then shatter their liver (also an actual move – bless this game), you want their insides to look their best.

It actually sound really really good. I'm hyped for this.

NetherRealm's gruesome revitalization of the classic Mortal Kombat franchise, set for release in 2011 for PS3 and Xbox 360, will include downloadable characters and possibly much more.

Mortal Kombat is getting a makeover for the new game–imagine Scorpion wearing bright red lipstick–with smooth 3D graphics in a classic 2D fighting mechanic, new fatalities, new battle modes and our favorite cast of iconic killers. As PlayStation Lifestyle discovered in a closed-door run-through of the game at E3, the character selection screen features a button labeled "DLC." This means new fighters and perhaps much more as one of NetherRealm's main concerns is delivering Mortal Kombat to the modern generation of gaming.

New game modes include a four-player "tag-team" and a two-player co-op arcade mode that takes the fight online.

So that means DLC is confirmed

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe looks like Sesame Street in comparison to what Warner Bros. is doing for the franchise reboot on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Mortal Kombat, the rebooting of the series by co-creator Ed Boon and his Netherrealm development team, made a behind-closed-doors appearance at Gamescom in Germany today, and we're there to see it all in its gruesome glory.

We've seen the E3 trailer from a few months ago, but this is the first time that Mortal Kombat's been shown in playable form. The game, according to the game's producer, is total fan service that is meant to appeal to the players of the series before the break into 3D with Mortal Kombat 4. This new design features 3D characters and environments but the action sticks to the strict 2D plane of the classic fighter.

The contrast between the T rated MK vs. DC and this game, at least in terms of sheer violence, is so drastic it's almost unbelievable that the 2008 game is still considered cannon for the series.

This looks and sounds great.

:( I liked the 3D Mortal Kombat games. I hope they retain the weapons and the multiple fighting stances.

Also, it's spelled CANON, IGN. Jesus.

3d MK was okay but 2D was always better

There wasn't any depth to 2D Mortal Kombat. As much as I loved MK2, it's purely a nostalgia trip. It's not a very strong game, and its only appeal is the nostalgia of the (now dated) ultra-violence.

There wasn't any real depth to the 3d ones. Just mostly gimmicks disguised as depth. E.g weapons. They added nothing to it besides people sticking a sword in you easily and going "omg your stabbed! lol that's so awesome" Where as the 2D ones were actually innovative. E.g The whole secret reptile fight. Plus the 2D ones were actually fun. The 3D ones weren't that fun. The only 3D i really liked was MK vs DC and that was more of a "cool batman vs scorpion" type than loving the gameplay that much.

BUT it's cool each to their own.

ANYWAY enough comparing the 3d games to the 2d ones, it's a total apple oranges trade-off

So there's been alot of info released on this since the last post, thought I'd get everyone caught up

This game takes place during MK2-Trilogy, but it starts off with Shao Kahn defeating Blaze in Armageddon and achieving ultimate power, so Raiden does something that warns MK2-era Raiden so he can try and change the future Cable/Bishop style

Games returning to 2D roots with full high def presentation (and stereoscopic 3D on PS3), no style changing/weapons, but characters who have traditionally had weapons will have them integrated into their movesets (Sub's Kori Blade, Kitana's fans, Kano's knives, etc.) this game is introducing 2-character tag-team, and new x-ray moves that show you the massive damage you are inflicting on your victims.

Roster (Confirmed): Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Kano, Raiden, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Goro (suspected to be an unplayable boss), Shang Tsung (see Goro), Reptile, Ermac, Kung Lao, Kitana, Jax, Mileena, Shao Kahn (see Goro), Noob Saibot, Jade, Sindel, Stryker, Nightwolf, Cyrax, Sektor, and Kratos on PS3

Rumoured Characters: Baraka (Skull model shown in video), Smoke (Sound file found), Kintaro (Lupinko leak), Sheeva (Lupinko leak), Kabal (sound file found), Quan Chi (sound file found), Skarlet (leg design released, seen in backgrounds), and Human Sektor (sound file found)

DLC (Ed Boon rattled these characters off as potentials): Rain, Shinnok, Kenshi, Tanya, Cyborg Smoke, or a new character

Chars likely not to be put in but should since they are MK1-3 era characters: Motaro (design difficulties), Chameleon, and Khameleon

Confirmed Stages: The Armory, The Belltower, The Bridge, The Cathedral, The Courtyard, The Deadpool, Goro's Lair, Graveyard, Jade's Desert, Kahn's Arena, Living Forest, The Netherrealm, The Street, The Pit II, Rooftop, Shang Tsung's Garden's, The Subway, Throne Room, Wasteland, Training Room, and Kratos' Stage (PS3 only), also a rumoured Lin Kuei Lab (where Cyrax/Sektor were roboticized)

Every character is getting 2 fatalities, an alternate costume, dlc fatalities, Klassic Costume DLC based off of original appearences.

I was really wary about this game at first, but my inner MK fanatic has fallen for this game. There is so many things in this game that feel like they're doing so right with this game. They've actually managed to get it accepted to the EVO gamers competitions (something MK hasn't been accepted to since UMK3). There's so many nice little details they're nailing down with this. I really can't wait for this game.

That Noob Saibot video blew my mind

Playstation plus members got the demo first. I've playing it a lot today. Awesome demo. It plays great
