I never said branches aren't alternate universes. You're mixing up terms. There's a difference between parallel and divergent realities.

Let's take the Marvel Zombies What if episode, that universe is divergent from Earth-199999 but parallel to other universes like Earth-616, Earth-688 and others. I don't know know much of the comics lore but this is how it's explained in the MCU and by people like Michael Waldron

Also I think the comics made allusion to the Reality Gem/Stone being what warped reality as it formed in some branched timelines. Which is why there is a LEGO universe and a toy universe, or paint one, etc.

Adding to this, Earth 13122 has a Infinity Stone exclusive to that universe called the Build Stone, which might be the reason why some realities look like Legos

Modern day Electro, but Earth-688 is actually Earth-120703, and the two Amazing Spider-Man films took place in the 2020s (despite the 2012/2013 onscreen dates, Petey born in '03), Giamatti's Rhino was an imposter, and Uncle Ben went from young handsome Adam Scott to Martin Sheen & haggard in a few years time.
