How would you rate Superman Returns?

Superman having a son is the best twist I've seen in a movie in a long time. That was just great. I kept imagining Superman flip out when he finds out and saying stuff like, "I knew that regular condom wasn't going to cut it" and "I was always bitter at my father for letting another man raise me, but now I'm thinking it might be genetic." I kept thinking of Mall Rats and hearing Lois say, "The pregnancy wasn't that bad. I just had to keep out of the sun."

The real reason Superman left for Krypton.

I should mention that I really like Superman Returns and it really was a great movie in its own context (I gave it four stars in the poll), but for the sake of sequels and the traditional 'happy' Superman-atmosphere, it wasn't very good. As much sequel-potential as there was in this film; I think a lot of people were browned off by the whole illegitimate son thing. It really just didn't seem like something the normal Superman would do. In the context of the character in this particular film, I didn't mind at all. He's just a flawed, ordinary guy. But the Superman the whole world knows probably wouldn't be so morally skewed in matters of fatherhood and consummation.

One thing's for sure though; anyone less than Brandon Routh in a Superman movie for the next twenty years simply won't do. :)

From Superman Homepage

Writer Mark Millar approached Warner Bros. months ago about his idea for a new Superman movie, but the WB, while impressed with Millar's pitch, reportedly declined his offer because he was too closely associated with Marvel Comics.

Now, with his comic book "Wanted" set to be a huge Hollywood hit, Millar is once again setting his sights on the Man of Steel according to an interview with the Daily Record in the U.K.

While he is an executive producer on Wanted, he is a full producer on his next movie Kick-***. He claims there are some A-list names involved in the film about an ordinary boy who becomes a superhero.

But Mark's big dream is making a Superman movie.

He said: "Since I was a kid I've always wanted to reinvent Superman for the 21st century.

"I've been planning this my entire life. I've got my director and producer set up, and it'll be 2011. This is how far ahead you have to think.

"The Superman brand is toxic after that last movie lost Û200million, but in 2011 we're hoping to restart it.

"Sadly I can't say who the director is, but we may make it official by Christmas.

"But fingers crossed it could work out, that would be my lifetime's dream."

You can read the complete interview at the Daily Record website.

Realizing that this interview would be picked up by Superman fans, Millar posted the following message on his personal forum today...

"PS: That Superman news is interesting, isn't it? In the interests of clarity (because I'm sure this will be picked up somewhere) a very well known American action director heard about my love of Superman, approached my and asked me to team up with he and his producer to make a pitch for this. We've been talking for several weeks now and, if this is going to happen, we'll know by Christmas. He has huge pull at WB so fingers crossed. But this is nothing more than a huge US name pulling me into his fold and making me part of a package."

Not too sure how I feel about this. Obviously Millar has the potential to write an excellent Superman movie (Red Son showed me this), but with Wanted shaping up to the biggest non-event of the Summer and his mentioning how he has a US action director, I'm not too sure it will be the Superman mega-experience fans want. It might be as good as Incredible Hulk but I want something as good as Batman Begins or the original Superman.

Also, Brandon Routh or nothing.

I'd rather he do the comic with Hitch instead of a movie.

Please God, let this happen and be great. Routh's great, but they shouldn't use him if it's a reboot. If it's a sequel, absolutely, but if it's a reboot they should start fresh with everything, all of that. The only thing I want back is the Superman theme.

I think Incredible Hulk proved that a soft reboot/sequel does have the formula for success.....but I think if anything that we should learn from this and mesh the 2 films together.

Create a soft-boot but keep some of the cast. There is no reason to NOT use the same Superman, Jimmy and Perry White. But at the same time, go ahead and recast Lane and Lex (as much as I loved Spacey in the role I have no problem with him not returning).

Use the same CGI/effects team. Brighten up the color pallette. The list goes on.

I 100% agree with this. I also think a complete reboot is needed. A whole new continuity so we can ruthless evil Lex not comical lex trying to get a little bit of land. A whole new series is needed. But I think it's important to make it diffrent. E.g here is how I see it happening.

Villain = someone like Metallo who seems to be targeting businesses. So at the end of the film they can leave it open/tease with Lex seeing footage of Metallo vs Superman and saying something like "Well it appears we have a new player here in Metropolis. But I promise I shall win the game" .

This shows Lex has never met superman so movies 1-5 are not in continuity, It serves to leave it open for sequel like the joker card in begins and gives us a movie of superman vs another non-lex villain even if Lex was pulling the strings.

Backstory = Important and has to be done. Yes we have seen it but we need it to show its a new start and help ground this in it's own universe. Not having a backstory works with say hulk when it was cut very short and once it out the way movie started.

The reason is Hulk is all about his internal struggle with the beast inside him. That is the foundation of the hulk stories. Superman however is all about this amazing guy from far away who has the power to kill us all but doesn't even consider it based on how he was raised. He is very much the hero and his backstory is essential in showing the key to the superman stories.

Also if handled well can show the more religious side of the story. Not getting in to a religious bashing or anything, But I always liked the stories that showed superman as the hero from above who is pretty much like a god walking among us.

Music = the Superman theme like Planet-man said as this has become an important thing for live action superman. It's as important as having the Star Wars theme before each movie.

But this is just my thoughts

I completely agree, Revamping is always better than a reboot when it comes to a film just a few years later. I really want hollywood to avoid mindless reboot after reboot. I would just add to Doom's comment that they not directly contradict the previous film. I'm not saying the kid has to be present, maybe just a mention or a cameo. I just really hate how hollywood may go ****ing crazy with reboots.

Revamp>Reboot

Yeah, a Requel would be fine with me.

(Note: "Requel" is the official term.)

I'd just rather they left Luthor out completely and had Brainiac be the villain on his own.

I thought he's probably the best actor to play Superman. The difference how they had him look as Clark and Superman is a nice distinction that you can see them as two different people.

I mean he wasn't horrible, but I would have preferred a Man of Steel closer to the version seen in the the Bruce Timm Animated Series. He was just a bit too effeminate for my taste. He spent the entire third act having his *** kicked. But then again that has more to do with direction that Routh's acting.

Yeah, I feel the Clark aspect needs the most overhaul, it basically the only thing I really didn't like about the movie. They need to portray a more modern version of Clark
