I'm sure I'm 5 years behind everuone else on this, but...

did you notice that in USM #10, or 11, Peter is on some website or something, for a security site, I think, and the 'Web girl' on the site is Patsy Walker?

She does not look like the Patsy Walker from Ultimates 2 #6 who is Hellcat in the Ultimate Defenders...was this mentioned anywhere else? Is she SUPPOSED to be the same person? Was this just an oversight?

(OK, I know, I'm making too much of this, AND someone is going to link me to a 5-year old UC thread where this was already discussed to death :) )

..anyone?

Most of Spider-man's enemies have been turned into jokes, Deadpool was ruined, Doc Oc was ruined, MJ got turned into the ****ing Demogoblin, Gwen was killed and then brought back as Gwarnage, Richard Parker was introduced and took up almost all of issue 100 only to later be found out as a clone of Peter, and all the other stupid **** that has happened in USM and this is what you choose to complain about. The possible continuity error involving a D-list character from almost 100 issues ago.

I...

I have no words.

Good catch! That's a fine example of Bendis' "cameo ultimizations". Even worse than throwaway ultimizations, these frequently violate continuity and use up interesting characters simply so nerds like you and me can feel superior that we know who they are. Someone else (I can't recall who) caught another one: a reporter called Eddie Brock from the Daily Globe asks Justin Hammer a question, but later, Peter looks up Eddie Brock on a computer and only finds a college student who is most definitely not a reporter. Occasionally they work (see the list of cat burglars Peter stumbles on in the first Black Cat storyline) but most of the time they're annoying.

Bendis also references Reed Richards in ways that make no sense. For example, Justin Hammer responds to the Daily Globe's Eddie's question by mocking the Globe. He says that he's surprised they aren't printing stories about Reed Richards sleeping with Madonna, although this is months before the F4 are created. I suppose in the context of Reed being a famous scientist, it makes sense, but it's still stupid. I guess he was going by the canon introduced by his throwaway ultimization of the F4 in the Ultimate Team-Up book.

Don't forget the annoying habit of cameos that ended up getting retconned later --- Eddie Brock (Sr? Jr?) appears as a reporter from the Daily Bugle in "Double Trouble", though we only see his hand and the mic it's holding.

And the thought that he's "just another guy named Eddie Brock" does not cut it, not even as a No-Prize explanation.

Its possible to just assume there are more than one person in the city of New York with those names.

Actually, no it isn't. The UFF got their powers before Spider-Man got his, and before the X-Men were formed. However, they weren't publicly outed as being super-powered beings, so in that sense it doesn't make much sense. But the four of them already had their powers. See the timeline thread for more clarification.

Its possible.

Why not? Sure, its weak, and we all know Bendis intended originally for it to be meant as the Eddie we all know and probably dislike, but the idea there isn't another Eddie Brock in all of NYC is pretty weak as well.

Well, for Eddie, there's the scene I mentioned where Peter looks him up. But I suppose you're right about Patsy Walker.

Sorry, I forgot they had their powers then. I just remembered that Peter meets Johnny later and doesn't know who he is (even though he mentioned the Fantastic Four when he's hitchhiking home after fighting Doctor Octopus!).

Maybe one of the multiple Eddie Brock's who reside in NYC was unlisted. ;)

True. Point is, Bendis is a hack. End of story.

I don't even know why I tried to explain away his mistakes in that last post. It almost comes across as me trying to defend him, which will never, ever happen.

Not to sound nerdy (but I guess that ship has sailed)...

To suggest that Bendis was referring to another Patsy Walker, when we know that the name was not chosen by accident, is like reading a Bendis USM story in which Elvis re-appears, but since he never comes out and specifically says, we are to be unsure as to which Elvis he is referring - the Elvis everyone knows about, or some other guy named Elvis which may or may not exist.

On the topic McCheese brought up about this complaint being so trivial in the canon of "Bendis boners", I guess I just ran out of things to say on these (and certainly can't speak as eloquently as others - the 1000 other problems are already 'discussed-out'!! :) )

Probability-wise, I totally agree with DIrishB's suggestion...but contextually, it seems unlikely that that was the intent. Irish - I applaud your forgiving soul, though!

Didn't Patsy Walker also appear on a Maxim Kong was reading? Or was it someone else?

This is a nit-picky thread. The entire point is to spend as many words as possible discussing as many different issues as possible while arguing as much as possible, all to arrive at a single point everyone agrees on that can be proved with one image:

Its not merely for the sake of suggesting its a different person, however, but merely to avoid continuity mistakes. There's a reason for it. Whether Bendis meant it as that particular person or not, for us continuity nit-pickers its a preferable option.

Absolutely. We all know he meant those people to be examples of comic character name-dropping. Little "Easter eggs", if you will.

And let it be clear I don't forgive Bendis for anything, I'm merely forced to turn a somewhat blind eye on his work for my own selfish and borderline psychotic purposes (see my countless timeline threads).

I think she did, as a matter of fact. Ah, I can't remember specifically, though.

Demogoblin's lack of breasts is what concerns me the most...

Actually, the fact that the crouch is covered there is more concerning. Have we ever gotten a direct shot of Green Goblin's or Hobgoblin's man areas? Do they just lose their manhood or are they kept?

I'm going to go flip through back issues now.

I'm pretty sure they're covered by pants or the cloaks they wear...

I can't believe I took the time to answer that question...and I'm even more amazed you asked it.

And that's the best picture there is of her.

The rest are even worse. They're total crap. It's like Bagley was drawing through his tears at what this book had become.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
