The Pixar Thread

They've been less than consistent for me. I disliked Monsters, Inc so I have no desire to see a prequel. I've yet to be able to work up any desire to see Cars, had even less interest in Cars 2, and the bad reviews for it clinched it. While both will probably be successful, would they even have gotten made if Brad Bird were available to make The Incredibles 2? That's the one I'm waiting for. I'm certainly excited about the little bit I know about Brave, though.

There will never be an INCREDIBLES 2. This is an established fact.

Okay peeps, it's that time again. Time to rank the PIXAR films from your favorite to your least favorite. Opinions change over time and our lists may look radically different from the last time we posted them -- I know mine does:

1. TOY STORY
2. THE INCREDIBLES
3. FINDING NEMO
4. UP
5. CARS
6. RATATOUILLE
7. MONSTER, INC.
8. TOY STORY 2
9. WALL-E
10. A BUG'S LIFE
11. TOY STORY 3

Everybody else, go!

I've said it before, I'll say it again:

Anyone who actively disliked Monsters, Inc. is either dead inside, or has flogged their inner child.

11 Cars
10 Monsters Inc
6-9 Toy Story 1-3 ( i can't remember them enough to rank them against each other)
5 Ratatouille
4 Finding Nemo
3 The Incredibles
2 Wall-E
1 Up

I still never seen A Bug's Life. I need too.

Uh-huh.

If we're going to be kicking around tired old phrases: You are a sad, strange little man. And you have
my pity.

I can't rank them. All I know is that they're all four or five star films except for Cars, which is a three.

Someone should buy them all for me on Blu-ray though.

If Brad Bird wanted to do INCREDIBLES 2 it would be done. As far as we know, he hasn't done it because he can't think of a better story. Considering the brilliance of TOY STORY 2 and 3, especially when they didn't want to do 2 and had to 'fix' a crappy Disney version, this seems extremely believable. I also say "as far as we know" because since it takes like 8 years to make a Pixar film, it's possible it's in the works for 2018 or something.

I'm shocked, shocked to discover that you would condemn someone for flogging children!

I was going to say "You have no soul" but this is better. You win.

People harang on CARS, and if you look at Rotten Tomatoes every Pixar film except CARS is over 90% (CARS is only 78% or something). But, even if you think it's their worst film (I don't) it's pretty bloody good and, here's the thing: It's the best film of that year. (Well, in the top five.) It was 2006. Seriously. There are only four other films you could consider "as good as" CARS or better – LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, THE PRESTIGE, BABEL, PAN'S LABYRINTH, and CASINO ROYALE.

They make the best film every year.

As for ranking them... whichever one I saw last.

Cars (and Cars 2) were made for the same reason the superheroes fought in Civil War: merchandising.

2006 films as good as or better than Cars: Thank You For Smoking, V For Vendetta, Inside Man, Lucky Number Slevin, Mission Impossible III, Superman Returns, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Little Miss Sunshine, Crank, The Departed, The Prestige, Borat, Casino Royale, Deja Vu, The Pursuit of Happyness, Children of Men and Pan's Labyrinth. And those are just the ones I've seen.

Or for kids.

Since, you know, not every film is mad for our age group and all.

But that's what's so great about Pixar: they don't make films for kids, they make films for families.

Bass said earlier that if another company made Cars it would be considered their best film and that's kind of my problem with it: it actually feels like it was made by another company (like Dreamworks). It feels like it's lacking that Pixar touch.

I don't even think it's bad but it's their weakest film (well, before Cars 2 apparently).

Oh hell no. I haven't seen THE DEPARTED yet and I didn't realise that came out in 2006, but the others... some I can imagine being better like THANK YOU FOR SMOKING which I've not seen, but there is no way MI3 or DEJA VU are better when they are bottom of the barrel stupid. The second PIRATES movie is a 3-hour spectacle in missing the point, as is the god-awful V FOR VENDETTA. SUPERMAN RETURNS is okay, but it's a maudlin, plodding, pedantic movie that thinks it's really meaningful. Other than the films I mentioned, I can certainly accept films I've heard good things about that I've not seen like THE DEPARTED might be better, but no way are ****ty action movies better than CARS.

I feel that way about A BUG'S LIFE. CARS is a rather poignant story about the destruction of Americana. A BUG'S LIFE is just THE SEVEN SAMURAI with bugs.

EDIT – Just looked at CARS 2 on Rotten Tomatoes.

44%?! Really? Damn. This might be the first properly bad Pixar movie. I'm really worried.

But then, I was really worried when I saw the Coen Bros' THE LADYKILLERS which was supposed to be their 'bad' film and it really isn't.

Considering CARS is their least beloved franchise, I wonder how bad it really is. I have trepidations now... :(

I don't understand the Cars hate. It's not their greatest, but in my opinion, it's better than A Bug's Life, and certainly better than Ratatouille (which is the only Pixar movie that I don't like at all).

And *prepares himself to be banned by Bass* i even liked it better than Wall*E, which was cute but tried to hard to be poignant, i thought.

I thought the message behind Wall*E was way too "in your face" (maybe because there was no dialogue besides EEEVAAA and WALLLLLEEEEEE for 85% of the movie). On the other hand, Up had a terrifically awesome message, but it was more subtle and the movie was just so much better.

That said, I'm not planning on seeing Cars 2 in theatres, I'll probably rent or borrow it when it comes out.

RATATOUILLE and WALL•E are awesome.

You can prepare yourself, but I will ban you when you least expect it.

That sounds about right. They're not going to do it without Brad Bird, so we're all waiting. But even Bird has said he does want to do it when he has a good enough story, so I don't know what Djf is talking about. And if Bird was ready now, I still think they would've given it priority over Cars and Monsters.

Did you finally get around to seeing the VFV film then? I'd heard you weren't going to. Anyway, I love it more than at least half of Pixar's crop. I agree about Superman Returns but I'd also give the same review to Wall-E(and I really went in to that one excited and wanting to like it). And in my opinion, calling MI3 just "a ****ty action movie" is like calling Finding Nemo just "a ****ty cartoon". It's so far from "bottom of the barrel stupid" that I can't even imagine how few bad action movies you must have seen(and given your tendency to know what you'll like beforehand and subsequently avoid, this doesn't seem farfetched?).

Anyway, this debate is pointless because there are hundreds of films from 2006 we can go to at random, but if Cars was actually the best film that year I think it would also have to be one of the best movies of all time.

Where was this established, and why?

god-awful V FOR VENDETTA

God-awful because it was a bad movie, or because Alan Moore hated it?

It is seriously one of my favorite movies, and I don't believe a better adaption of a comic into a movie can be made, especially one set in an era that has little to no meaning for the core audience the movie was made for.

Well, no. For all we know, Brad Bird went into Pixar yesterday and said, "I've got an idea for INCREDIBLES 2!" Prioritizing other movies has nothing to do with it. It's possible it's in it's early stages as we speak and we wouldn't know for at least a year.

My thoughts on MI:3 as I watched it.

God-awful because it was a bad movie, or because Alan Moore hated it?

It can't be both?

Right. I am trying more and more to not criticize films people really enjoy. Ever since a friend came up to me and started talking about KICK-ASS and I said, "Well, it's a piece of ****. The problem is it's cheap because..." and after I explained why it sucked he couldn't enjoy it anymore and I realised, "Why the hell am I telling people why films suck? There's no positive response out of it other than 'they agree with me' which is less satisfying than hearing someone talk about how much they love it". So I'm trying not to do it anymore. Now, sometimes, I'll relapse and start ranting, and other times, I won't. You'll notice I've not been jumping into threads like THE DEATH OF ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN to really savage it like I used to with HEROES. I recently took a look at the RED HULK: SCORCHED EARTH everyone raved about and was disappointed but I didn't really say anything because I don't really want to upset people anymore.

Considering that V FOR VENDETTA is one of your favourite movies, I'm not going to say why I think it is awful. Just enjoy it, and that's that.

Lasseter said the reason why he decided on making Cars 2 was because of a road trip he took with his family and thought that would be a good thing for a sequel, (a road trip). Obviously it wouldn't be just a road trip, but that led way to a world race and etc.

I enjoy Cars, it's still a very good movie. But with all the Pixar movies, it's the "weakest".

Also, I believe it takes 4 years to make a Pixar film, if I remember correctly.

I'm not too surprised that Cars 2 is looking bad. The first one used up about every car joke it could use (effectively I might add) and had a great ending. Especially since their biggest draw for this is Larry the Cable Guy who stopped being a nationwide sensation when I was in high school this film lacks any of the draw the original had. I think the first had a lot of magic in it that it won't be able to duplicate in the second without the appeal of Radiator Springs and most sad of all Paul Newman :(

On another note here's my rankings of the movies as of now. I'm a bit disappointed this is where they went but am looking forward to Monsters University.

1 (Tied) Incredibles and Finding Nemo
3. Toy Story 3
4. Monster's Inc
5. Toy Story
6. Ratatouille
7. Up
8. Wall-E
9. Toy Story 2
10. Cars
11. A Bug's Life

I know Wall-E and Up are higher on most other lists but the others are just more enjoyable for me and I still think Finding Nemo is their most touching movie while Incredibles is their most thrilling. Toy Story 3 makes me cry every time because the timeline matches up with my own life almost perfectly. Really they're all good movies.
