yeah but in OG GoWIII you destroy every Polytheist religion, that's no longer the case as the norse saga is a thing and the Egyptian pantheon is still alive and well.
True but I still think it's worth acknowledging because it means the intention for the series up to that point beforehand was that the series was set in the final decade of the BC era

I disagree on that tbh.

I disagree on that tbh.
Why? I'm just saying that like, the minds of the creators envisioned the world of the games to be set directly before the birth of Jesus so wouldn't that imply that's when the games should be set? I'm just trying to see this from the mindset of the developers

Btw you could probably add this trailer to the timeline. The first part takes place in the Battletoads universe (sometime before they're put in the simulation, it uses the NES designs so maybe right after NES? But one of Rash's voice lines is "these cameos are killing me" which could indicate it happens after the Shovel Knight Crossover since that was the other crossover that came out around this time iirc) the rest of the trailer occurs in the Killer Instinct universe since we see Rash enter through a portal.

but that was the plan cos every pantheon would be dead as the next era would be a monotheistic religion.

We can ignore the references to historical events the game makes? Sure but the fact that the Egyptian pantheon still exist contradicts what they original had in mind.

So nope, it stays where it's set.

Alright. I was actually just talking with someone about it and I think it's possible that the timeline could go like this since 3 implies multiple centuries had passed since the first game:

GoW1: unknown time after 1200 BC
GoWCoO: 480 BC (lines up with Persian War)
GoW2: 226 BC (lines up with destruction of Colossus of Rhodes)
GoW3: 226 BC (picks up immediately after GoW2)
Shovel Knight: 614 AD (Kratos is going to the Norse area when he passes through Shovel Knight's land, I heard Kratos was in the Norse area for about 150 years before the 4th game so if that's true Shovel Knight goes here and this lines up somewhat well with being medieval england which is what Shovel Knight is inspired by.)
GoW4: Circa 774 AD (I heard it's set about 1000 years after 3 and that it's set before the Viking era so this works really well)

This way the most historical dates work all at once. The only thing that doesn't work is the Hercules 5th labor one but that's a small price to pay for all the other dates lining up well

Apparently CoO happens halfway through Kratos' 10 year servitude to the gods so the timeline is definitely this:

Ascension- 485 BC
Chains of Olympus- 480 BC
GoW1- 475 BC
Ghost of Sparta- 475 BC
Betrayal- 226 BC
GoW2- 226 BC
GoW3- 226 BC
Battletoads series up to BEFORE Arcade- 62? AD
Shovel Knight (+side stories)- 624 AD?
Battletoads Arcade- 624 AD?
Battletoads The Lost Adventure- 624 AD?
Yooka-Laylee- ??? AD
Yooka-Laylee: The Impossible Lair- ??? AD
Battletoads 2020- 650 AD?
GoW4- 774 AD
Ragnarok- 778 AD

Btw there's another game that could be part of this universe.

Indivisible

Shovel Knight (alongside other indie game characters like Shantae, Annie from Skullgirls and a few others I'm forgetting) were supposed to appear in the game. They never got added unfortunately but Shovel Knight is still referenced because one of the NPCs in the game mentions him and asks if you have seen him.

So basically

Universe 1

God of War
Shovel Knight
Battletoads

Universe 2

Battletoads cartoon pilot/comic backstory
Double Dragon
Kunio-Kun
River City Ransom
River City Girls
When Double Dragon is set

@Megatron do you agree with this take on the timeline? I've been waiting for a response on it

What's the context of that quote? Was he fighting in that before or after he became a minion or ares? Or after he became a god?
as a Spartan Warrior, so not even when he was Captain.

adding the flashbacks from the GoW comics, which is when he becomes a Captain, it has to be before that or Calliope would be like 10 years older when he comces back, while he spent a lot of time for being seen as a Threat by Ares.

When does Kratos become immortal? That could explain it, maybe when he was a warrior he lived in 13th-12th century BC, then became immortal by Ares, then in 485 BC centuries later he betrays Ares and starts his 10 year long quest. Then he opens Pandora's box and centuries later GOW2/3 occur. (That last one has to be true since they say Pandora's box was open centuries before GOW2 and Kratos opened it in the first game)

he becomes immortal when he becomes a god in GoW 1. and deadolus notes specify that 12 years passed between GoW1 and 2.

Deadolus? Can I see the source for that please? I swear there's something that makes GOW 2/3 centuries after the first game
  • Judging from the 4603 days of working on the Labyrinth, Daedalus has spent a total of 12.6 years working on it. This may be disproven since Zeus had the Labyrinth built to lock Pandora away after Hephaestus confessed of her existence; which took place after Kratos killed Ares. This could also imply that 12.6 years has passed between God of War and God of War III.

Hmmm.. maybe

although here's some evidence that points to a few hundred years passing

P.S. make sure to check the replies
I'm mostly on the side of hundreds of years passing so GoW2/3 can take place around the 200s BC since that's when the Colossus of Rhodes was destroyed. Not only that but since GOW4 takes place 1000 years after 3 that would place GOW4 in the late 700s which fit with the pre-viking era. And we need it to be as far into the future as possible since Shovel Knight takes place before Kratos arrived in the Norse area (which was about 150 years before GOW4) and Shovel Knight is clearly medieval times with knight armor and stuff

So I think it might make more sense if Zeus just had the labyrinth built 12 years before GOW2 since he was probably already busy imprisoning cronos and Hephaestus at the start of the gap of time and he probably did a lot of stuff in-between that as preparation for stopping Kratos that we didn't hear about

One last thing is that in the "Fate of a Titan" video from GOW1 it's said that Kronos lived for a thousand more years after Kratos opened the Pandora's box. Meaning that if GOW1 really is set during the Trojan war in the 13th Century BC that means GOW3 has to be 3rd Century BC which would be the 200s which is where I have it

the ending of GoW one also says that Kratos kept his status as the GoW till this day and kept watching all the conflicts.

I also read the comments under your post and the majority were people saying things that I'm saying now, like the 13 Years passing and the Labyrinth notes.

That's the ending of the game. Fate of a Titan is a separate cutscene you unlock once you beat God Mode
I know, but I meant that a cutscene of the 1st game was retconned, it could be that too aswell since it's an extra thing, way less important than an ending.
