The Simpsons (Discussion/Spoilers)

I found the Alan Moore episode on the internet last night(first new one I've watched in around two years).

The first 8 minutes or so, as in the part that focused on the two comic book shops and everything inside, was great.

The rest was boring. And it's testament to the utterly pathetic, talentless hackdom of whoever they have writing the show nowadays. They come up with a mediocre story and then can't even come up with a show's worth of material for it, and not only that, but they didn't even try to come up with a way to segue between the two of them. Partway through the show, they stop talking about comics and turn the camera to whatever Marge is doing, with no resolution or point to the other plot.

Gah. I genuinely hate the show. Anyone interested should just look up the first chunk on YouTube for the excellent comic references and ditch the rest.

Even though I've always loved "The Simpsons", I'll admit that the past few seasons were just merely "good - average". But I've really been enjoying the new season -- Season 20!! -- especially last week's and this week's episodes. Last week's was more of a touching "For Your Emmy Consideration" installment (note: they've won the Animated Series Emmy at least 2 out of the last four years), but the newest one had me in stitches throughout. It was definitely one of the funniest episodes in a long time. I'm hoping some of you agree with me, since I'm frustrated that I seem to be the only one still thoroughly in love with the program.

The latest episode of The Simpsons was so painfully unfunny that I quit watching twenty minutes in. I don't think I was even mildly amused at a single moment in it.

wow you cut off the two minutes congratulations your rage is well noted

Anyone see the new episode with Mapple Mypods and Homer's intolerance of Muslims?

I could stop laughing when he's by their window.

*homer looks through windows at Muslim family*
"I love blowing up buildings"
*homer ducks so can no longer hear*
"Safely and legally to help make way for new buildings"
*homer pops up again*
"I know I'm killing my self but it's worth it for the profit, Soon I'll be in a better place"
*homer ducks so can no longer hear*
"In my new managerial office"

:lol::lol::lol: funny scene

Also loved the Genie from Aladin been there as he was voiced by Dan Castellaneta when Robin Williams wasn't doing it.

Little problem with this story, Im liked it better when American Dad did this 3 years and when South Park did this 2 years ago, at least it was in character for Stan and Cartman to be racist towards Muslims, with homer they just shoe horn it into the character in order to make this tired plot work. Simpsons used to be setting trends, not just following them.

It is totally in homer's character. While like you mentioned Cartman his was hatred, Homer's is blind following what he's seen on tv and what people tell him. Remember Apu's wedding? Homer was very racist to Apu even dressing up like ganesh. But with Homer it's more of he just doesn't know any better. It's not filled with hate he's dumb enough to need others to point it out.

Also you mentioned American Dad and South Park doing it. Yet when the creators of south park have done story lines simpsons did first or when the people who make American dad do a complete rip-off of the simpsons in family guy people are ok it with?

But honestly I see more shows doing this storyline as there is racism towards Muslims, Like 90's and some 80's stuff had the same thing story wise with black people to try and get the message across not to be raciest to black people.

The Simpsons have gone HD and to celebrate there is a brand new title sequence.

Now in its 20th season, the cult cartoon has made the switch to high definition television and has made use of wide screen technology.

It is only the second time in the show's 20-year history that a permanent change has been made to the opening sequence.

Watch it here :

I like Otto eating the radioactive rod. That's brilliant.

The episode itself sure did! It looked great, but it sucked ***.

It was yet another alternate future episode, like bart in the indian casino, or Lisa at the medieval festival

lame

This one was different to those. Those the alternate future = the main plot. This one the main plot was Homer dealing with what may have been.

Plus parts of this were really funny. E.g "talk to the garlic bread" then when he tries it the guy mocks him for it . Or "Does she ever shut up?" "Not even when snorkeling" "HEY! I was describing beautiful fish!"

I'm not going to say it's one of the best but it was still funny and entertaining. I for one am not ashamed to admit i've never stopped liking the simpsons and still look forward to new episodes.

same **** different shoe

same **** different shoe

Well they have already done everything it stands to reason a show that's been on that long would have some similar plots for episodes. It's like anything else e.g comics. How many Spider-man plots have been basically the same?

I agree with Mole.

Simpsons now isn't the greatest thing or as inspired as it used to be, but its not necessarily sucktitude. I think the problem is that they've run out of plot structures to work with. That doesn't make the show worse, it just means its formulaic. 'Formulaic' is not always pejorative, it means there is always a formula, like Seinfeld, Frasier and many other great TV comedies.

The only way the writers and producers get around formula as an obstacle to invention is to replace the content markers in every iteration of a formula. Homer arbitrarily getting a new job at a bakery in one season becomes Homer arbitrarily getting a new job as a talk show host in another. Lisa standing up for veganism, becomes replaced with Lisa becoming part of a Wicca circle. And what that does is generate new jokes, gags and cracks at modern culture.

So for Simpsons to suck, it had to have been breaking what it used to do. Of course, people are quick to point out that the show was much more "original" or "inventive" or "unpredictable" than it is now, but a) Originality is NOT the sine qua non of brilliant TV and b) It was those things because it was the new kid of comedy, it's kind of like saying the first Twinkie you had on a week-long Twinkie diet was better than all the Twinkies you had today.
