I figured it would be fitting to start a new thread, considering all the Bat-books are getting a relaunch. It seems the new titles are going to be co-mingling pretty extensively, so I figured an umbrella thread would be useful.

Anyway. It's official. Morrison and Quitely are writing Batman and Robin. There's going to be a Morrison interview tomorrow. Dig it. It looks like Dick Grayson and Damian Wayne.

and in case you missed it... Judd Winnick is on Batman. Hopefully he'll be writing Jason Todd, and not Dick Grayson. And maybe he'll learn something from being around Rucka, Morrison, and Dini..... but probably not.

I will definitely be reading the Morrison/Quitely Batman and Robin. I hope it's just like All Star Superman. It should be fantastic.

I will also try out the Dini Batman titles and probably Winick's Batman, because I did enjoy some of his stories. Maybe he'll resolve the end of his Under the Hood arc?

Really? I thought Winnick's run was horrible. I'm guessing (hoping) Winnick will be writing about Jason Todd, who's apparently putting on a Batman costume and running around with guns. Then we don't have to worry about his garbage overlapping too much with the other books.

That link also finally shows the design for the new Batmobile Morrison's been talking about since Batman and Son.

I thought it was relatively good compared to everything else he's written. I enjoyed the Scarebeast arc and I liked the idea of Under the Hood, even though some of it was a bit crappy and it never actually ended.

Also, the Batman universe is now being run by Morrison, Dini and Rucka. That is so awesome. I love what DC are doing with Batman and Superman. These characters deserve top talent like this.

And people over at Comic Bloc are talking about a comic that is going to spin out of the Batwoman story in Detective Comics... I'm guessing it will be a proper Batwoman ongoing or maybe something like Gotham Central with The Question? Rucka writing a Batwoman/Question ongoing would rule everything.

An interview with Grant Morrison.

It's like David Lynch doing the Batman TV show.

It's almost a reverse of the traditional dynamic, with a more light-hearted and spontaneous Batman and a scowling, badass Robin.

This is the next book in what will be a 5-volume series beginning 'Batman & Son' but it can be read on its own too.

Frank Quitely's coming back to the book to wrap up our year-long storyline and I think we'd all love to see his take on the Joker, so yeah, I'd like to think I can make that happen in some way.

This is going to be awesome.

The bat-book I'm waiting for is "Sirens" That should be cool.

where does this leave Tim Drake?

(I don't read Batman comics much, but i like Tim from Teen Titans)

...Maybe he'll become the new Nightwing?

Tim Drake might become Red Robin.

do you actually have a reason to think that, or are you just guessing?

Red Robin seems to be the only open spot so it makes sense Tim would be him. Maybe he's disgusted that Damien is the new Robin so he changes his name?

We're all just guessing.

okay, it makes more sense to me that he would become Nightwing, but who knows.

There is also the issue of who his legal guardian will be now that Bruce is dead.

another question, Morrison says this will the "next book in...a five part series"

what are the other parts?

are they
Batman & Son
The Black Glove
The Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul
Batman R.I.P.
?

The reason I ask is because I'm thinking of getting into some DC stuff. I was reading Teen Titans, but it sucks since Geoff Johns left. I think I want to check out more Batman and Geoff John's Run on Green Lantern

I'm pretty sure Batman and Son, The Black Glove and RIP were the first three books. I don't think Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul counts. That makes Batman and Robin the fourth book and then one more to come.

Unless... his entire first run was just the first book and this is the beginning of the second, which would be pretty crazy.

But yeah, best DC stuff to check out is the stuff by Geoff Johns.

Here are all the new titles with the creative teams:

Batman - Judd Winick/Tony Daniel

Batman & Robin - Grant Morrison/Frank Quitely

Detective Comics - Greg Rucka/J.H. Williams III

Red Robin - Christopher Yost/Ramon Bachs

Streets of Gotham - Paul Dini/Dustin Nguyen

Outsiders - Pete Tomasi/Lee Garbett

Gotham City Sirens - Paul Dini/Guillem March

And Quitely's Joker (I believe it's just a drawing for a fan but it looks good nonetheless):

That is some amazing talent.

I'm glad that Tony Daniel and Dustin Nguyen are staying on some books.

And freaking Williams also.

Dude, that's awesome... I mean, aside from Winnick writing Batman, but at least it'll have Tony Daniel. So the art will be awesome at least.

Chris Yost makes perfect sense for a Red Robin book if it's Tim Drake in the role. And every sign seems to be pointing that way. I'm just curious about what direction that book will take.

I think the Dick/Damian dynamic will be great, a fresh new perspective. Dick Grayson is more colorful and garish than Batman, and he's been Robin in the past, so I could see him being able to communicate with Damian in a way Bruce never really could.

Oh, and Guillem March's art is so beautiful. It'll be perfect for a girl-ensemble book.

As for Morrison's tenure on the book.... Yeah.... I think Batman and Son through RIP is just his first book. Book two will be B&R; which means he'll be wrapping up just in time for me to take over. Mwa.

So beautiful...

I can't remember the last time I saw a Joker picture that looked so much like Conrad Veidt.

I'm getting more and more hyped for Batman & Robin. It seems like it's going to be such a weird and trippy, almost childlike arc. But something tells me it will be a heck of a lot more comprehensible than R.I.P. and all of that other stuff.

The first time, it took 'em 30 years to run me off. This time though, they must have upped their game, 'cause they've made me wave the white flag after only 4 years.

"Thanks" DC.

*rolls eyes*

After watching a recent interview with DC's Dan DiDio and Mike Marts discussing what they have in store for Batman in comics (CLICK HERE to view) -- this so-called "New Era for Batman" -- I'm sad to say that I have absolutely ZERO interest in any of these future endeavors.

Why?

BECAUSE "BATMAN" HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY OF THIS!

Sure, there's going to be a guy (Dick Grayson I presume?) in a Bat-Suit fighting crime in Gotham City. But unless it's Bruce Wayne in a Bat-Suit fighting crime in Gotham City, it's NOT Batman.

It's like they say, it don't matter how much perfume you spray on a piece of crap, it's STILL a piece of crap.

Bruce Wayne is Batman, Batman is Bruce Wayne. Remove that element from the character, and you don't have THE character.

And DC has to know this, right? Really, there's just no way (*crosses fingers*) they think that you can stick anyone in the suit -- Dick Grayson included -- and it's Batman. And that's what makes this all the more maddening is because it's nothing more than a gimmick -- a stunt to get people talking and angry (duh!) and buying more comics.

I guess DC figures that we're all of the Bat-sheep will simply fall in line and buy "Battle For the Cowl," this BATMAN & ROBIN by Grant Morrison, this DETECTIVE starring Batwoman -- and ALL of this other Bat-Garbage and wait. The Bat-sheep'll just bend over and scream "Thank you sir, may I have another" buy and read this drivel, and wait for Bruce Wayne's inevitable return. Then when he DOES return, the Bat-sheep will laugh a laugh of relief and say, "Whew! You really had us going there DC!" And the fine Bat-Folk at DC will -- and probably have been -- laugh a laugh of "Ha! We really had those Bat-sheep going!"

Is Grant Morrison the tail that wags the dog at DC?

Well you know what? I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!

And YOU -- you "Bat-Sheep" -- should be too.

Check out these results of a recent "Bat-Poll":

Yeah, I know this isn't a scientific poll, but the results pretty-much echo the feedback I'm getting from fans via email. I think it's pretty telling that 32% don't read the Batman comics and 27% have stopped reading because of FINAL CRISIS and BATMAN, R.I.P.. On the other hand, only 17% seem to like what's going on while 23% are going to keep reading -- despite not liking the state of the Bat-Comics.

Before y'all even do it, spare me with the "It's all about the story…being creative…and the ride" stuff, OK? This is the sort of mentality that's allowing DC to do this BS to all of us Batman fans. When people write in to me and tell me, "Give it a chance" or "Enjoy the ride," all you're really saying is "Thank you sir, may I have another."

Think about that when your paying for that next Bat-Comic, OK?

The thing is though, DC's is getting too cute for their own britches. I guess they didn't learn anything when previous gimmicks like KNIGHTFALL, UNDER THE RED HOOD, CONTAGION, CATACLYSM, and "Whatever BIG Stunt Crossover" drove longtime fans away -- like me -- back in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Do they NOT think fans will simply accept good storylines in the monthlies that DON'T have to crossover into the other titles and NOT come off as superhero soap operas? Like the BEST Batman comic book of late -- Paul Dini's run on DETECTIVE.

Apparently not.

I have a new crusade and I haven't been this fired up since I walked out of BATMAN & ROBIN back in June of '97.

I'd like for DC Comics to realize that they can have their cake and eat it too. If they feel the need to do all this crazy-*** crossover/stunt/gimmicky stuff, cool. BUT, how about a regular -- and QUALITY -- title or two that isn't mixed up in all that soap opera-ish insanity? How about more miniseries like Matt Wagner's BATMAN AND THE MONSTER MEN and BATMAN AND THE MAD MONK? Or the classic THE LONG HALLOWEEN from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale? Hell, or even more of stuff like the recent BATMAN: CACOPHANY from Kevin Smith?

Don't tell me that that's what BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL and ALL-STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN is for, OK? Why, because they've either sucked, can't get on a regular release schedule, or both (ASB&R). If that wasn't the case, then perhaps this wouldn't be such an issue.

DC, trust me, you're alienating A LOT of you longtime, loyal fans. And BOF is now banging the drum on their behalf of them -- and mine.

Think…think about this: Bruce Wayne's now a caveman in the comics.

*shakes head*

A bit one-sided, methinks. He's far too conservative. But I suppose he's got a point.

He is missing the point entirely.

*points to the thread where I argued why Bruce Wayne should no longer be Batman"

He totally and completely missed the point. The essence of DC is Legacy. Someone taking up the mantle of a fallen hero is par for the course in that universe, and that's one of the reasons why I love it.

This is no different than the whining that occurred when; Barry became Flash, Hal became Green Lantern, Wally became Flash, Jean Paul became Batman, Bart became Flash, Jon became Green Lantern, Guy became Green Lantern, Freddy became Captain Marvel, Donna became Wonder Woman, the list goes on.

Oh, and Guillem March's art is so beautiful. It'll be perfect for a girl-ensemble book.

God, I love March's art.
