Watchmen film discussion (Spoilers!)

How would you rate Watchmen?

I watched the director's cut last night and saw this and thought it was weird that I didn't remember it from the original film. But it is pretty moving, especially how he fights the gang members as best as he can. The actual killing where he gets whacked in the head with a trophy a bunch of times is brutal and graphic even though we don't actually "see" it.

After watching it I realized that I do really like the film, even though they ruined the story by modifying the ending.

A 5 disc version comes out later in the year.

Yeah, I heard that. Does anyone know if it is going to be released for regular DVD, or will it only be Blu Ray? I have yet to get a Blu Ray player.

I'm pretty sure it's both formats. If anything, the Blu-Ray version would surely have less discs, right?

FIVE discs? Whoa.

I didn't realize the director's cut would be so early. I still want to wait for the version with Black Frieghter and Under The Hood integrated in, though. Not to mention the rumoured squid-ending, which would change everything.

I saw that but didn't see any details about it other than it included the Black Freighter film meshed in with the movie and the Motion Comic - which I already have. If it had something new (especially if it was the squid ending) I would get the 5 disc version.

And I can't believe for one minute that the squid ending wasn't done and isn't being considered for release in some capacity. It's only a matter of time.

I'm certain they at least did a screen test

I didn't know that...humm. If they do have that in the 5-disc version I might just have to get it.

What exactly makes you think that? I'm not saying that you're wrong it's just that I haven't heard anything about the squid ending being filmed from people actually involved in the production. I've heard rumours but I just assumed it was fanboy wishful thinking. The time and money it would take to do the effects shots on that would be substantial...I just can't see them doing that for a DVD release that only hardcore fans would buy.

Re: The DVD purchase thread

I bought Watchmen Director's Cut. To be honest the theatrical release is a better movie, but it was cool to see some scenes from the book put to film. Some of the additions just weren't needed though, and weren't even in the book. For instance there's a scene where
Silk Spectre II escapes from the government after they detain her following Manhattan going to Mars
. If I'm not mistaken, in the book they don't give a **** about her after Manhattan leaves. This not only saves time but makes more sense. Also, if you're expecting drastic changes to the end...
there aren't any.

When it comes to it the scenes that weren't in the theatrical version weren't there for a reason. All in all I still liked Watchmen. This might be heresy, but I kinda like this ending more than the one in the book. While they should have had the streets full of dead bodies, I don't have a problem with them using Manhattan energy thingys and not a giant squid.

I feel exactly the same on this point, reasonable change that was just missing a little to make it great

Re: The DVD purchase thread

But it completely changed the intention of the plan:
to unite the world against a terrifying external enemy. Not a superhero who is completely public, American and so powerful both sides know there's no point uniting against it.

I like the movie, but the book's ending is a million times more solid.

I see what you are saying, but I disagree to a certain extent.
By this point Manhattan is an external being (at least in the eyes of the population), and the fact that he is public only means that Veidt's plan is more likely to work. A lasting peace is more likely if the world can unite against a threat that they know exists. After a few years without any evidence of more giant alien squids it seems more likely that humans would fall back into their own ways, rather than if you have Manhattan who people know exists.
I don't see how the intention of the plan is any different. The way I see it, the plan itself is the only thing that has changed.

After thinking abut it, perhaps my words were too strong. The squid plot works better within the book, but I think what they came up with works better for a film. I don't think the squid plot would have worked on screen. Sure, the fans would buy it and love it, but everyone else would be wondering "WTF". I know I told two of my friends the Veidt's original plot and they seemed to think it was ridiculous.

Plus there was no mention of genetic engineering, rembmer when the Lynx showed up, when I saw the whole thread said "wtf?"

I told my brother right after the movie and he kept saying "that's bull ****, you're bull ****ting me"

I think Ozymandias using Manhattan to terrify the world into a state of peace makes more sense than the squid.

It's an effective use of pre-existing resources, and pays off Manhattan. Manhattan is the reason humans are escalating to war. On the surface, it looks like Manhattan is the one thing stopping nuclear war, because he's so powerful, Russian cannot attack the USA. But in actual fact, he's so powerful, that the other countries can't do anything but work around the clock to create a weapon of equal power. As such, he's actually creating and escalating war footing. Making Manhattan appear as a renegade god who will devour the Earth in order to get everyone to cooperate makes perfect sense.

Except in one regard: why wouldn't Ozymandias just include Manhattan from the get go? I'd suggest that it's because he can't ask Manhattan to do it or to put forth an ultimatum to the world because if Manhattan says 'no', Ozymandias is dead and the plan can't work.

Hurm.

Thank You!

Never thought of that. Though it applies to book as well.

Maybe, but with the squid is was so much more...grotesque, and therefore did a better job illustrating how horrifying the ends Ozymandias would go to to obtain his goal were.

Snyder could have made the ending just as grotesque even with the Manhattan bombs. I would agree that that was a failure on his part.

To clarify I'm not saying that the idea to use Manhattan's energy devices instead of the Squid was a bad idea, just that Snyder should have included the carnage in the streets of NYC when doing this. All in all I like the movie...it does bother me that there are stupid little things here and there that keep it from being great.
