I've changed my mind about Stuart Immonen...

I love Land's work, but I agree with the "stiffness" criticism.
He draws really pretty pictures, which isn't necessarily the best thing for a comic. Like the links said, he's not necessarily consistent and all his women are basically the same hot chick; don't get me wrong. I'm down with that, but it starts to get repetitive and when half the time we're relying on the art to know who a character is? Less cool.

That said, I hate him with less fire than Immonen.

Since Land's art has been mentioned, I'd like to chime in (on this revived thread)

I CAN'T STAND when you recognize the actual photo from which his art has been traced. There was a pic of Wasp (or was it Scarlet Witch?) in Ultimate Power that I saw, and instantly knew the photo of Alanis Morissette from which he traced. Somehow that really 'removes' you from the story and situation.

As static pieces, I think his pics are nice, but they just don't lend themselves to dynamic action scenes.

Immomen I like.

Bachalo? My only impressions of him come from Ultimate War. His work was like very well made doodles on circular paper. Each part was nice, but altogether it was confusing, and almost 'un-decodable' in terms of sequence.

That being said, each of these artists are miles better than me. (my profession has nothing to do with art, writing or comics). The same can't be said of all comic WRITERS.

I like going back and reading the hate arguements for Land's tracing.

We all know he does it. But it still looks pretty.

I'm still loving the old hypocrisy, where it was perfectly fine badmouthing Bachalo/Immonen/JRJR, but god forbid I mock Joss Whedon.

I would just like to note how utterly correct I was and still am about Land being a hack. I don't care how 'pretty' and professional your art looks, if you can't tell a ****ing story or draw something without tracing it you probably shouldn't be working as a professional comic book artist.

I thought Land's utter incompetence was generally regarded as common knowledge.

Aside from the fact that he's a hack, the fact that his drawings are completely static just completely cripple his work. It's the same reason I don't really like Alex Ross.

it's because Land = Hack is a completely objective truth.

Not liking Bachalo, Immonen, JRJR, (even Whedon) is completely subjective taste.

Stuart Immonen is still better than everyone else.

Ok...not saying that you're wrong but how does Land tracing his work differ from someone who traces via photos on a lightboard like Bradstreet?

I'm not familiar with Bradstreets process, but I'm pretty sure he uses things besides Sports Illustrated, Victoria's Secret Catalogues, and Girls Gone Wild videos.

No discredit to Bradstreet.

But I know that Bradstreet uses actual models/actors and actually photographs them with the props, costumes, the whole spread.

Then he develops his photos and traces/inks the stuff himself.

I'm not sure what Land's process is, but if he's doing the same thing with photos (only not doing the photographing himself), then what's the difference between Land and Bradstreet if Land is just skipping a step?

Land is putting a mask over someone else's work, Larocca and Deodato aren't much better in that regard with celebrity matching. But Land is the worst example of this, you can create a Land comic with some scane of a sports illustrated and a good version of photoshop.

Bradstreet, and Alex Ross, and Quesada all take their own photo's, often of themselves for reference, and draw something new over it.
