Captain America Vol. 5 by Ed Brubaker discussion (SPOILERS!)

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

It was Sharon Carter, dressed in drag.

Steve Rogers was dressed as Sharon Carter, next to the real Sharon Carter.

Anyways, I've recently nopticed this. Captain America was made to fight the Nazi's, and he's blond with blue eyes. A tad hypocritical, yes?

Plus, he seems to only go after blonds in the comics as his lovers.

I think he was living a double standard.

I don't think it's hypocritical to stand for something you believe in against what someone else would tell you to be true. This imo is just a pr stunt. A pike in comic sales will ensue and then he comes back, or he never really left.

I believe that's mentioned in Universe X.

Yarr...I hate Universe X.

I think that Cap should come back wearing that god-aweful costume he wore in the 70's. "Nomad" or something. That would make me laugh.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

I hear he's being autopsied in #26, so I'm really interested to see how he makes his big return right before they release the Captain America film:roll:

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

Captain America, of course, being known for using slang. And having not ever met any of the New Avengers members.

When did he say he never met them? The "you guys banter" comment? It's a new team and they're together under intense circumstances. It could be a different context.

I can see Captain America saying "yo."

And particularly if he has some sort of amnesia, perhaps from almost dying?

Then why is he so buddy-buddy with Cage?

Oh yeah, because Bendis is writing this.

Why shouldn't he be buddy-buddy with Cage? They were on the same side in the Cvil War.

Plus, if he's got amnesia, Cage is just so damn charismatic who wouldn't love him?

If he were real, I'd totally hit it.

In a VERY heterosexual way.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

CBR: To start with, we have to ask, is Cap really dead or just hanging out with Nick Fury in some undisclosed location?

Brubaker: Nick Fury? Undisclosed location? Huh. That's not a bad idea. I wonder how Nick would feel sharing it with a corpse.

CBR: Indeed. So, what makes this death more compelling than say the Death of Superman, which was also well reported on in the mainstream media?

Brubaker: Well, hopefully because Captain America is intrinsically more interesting than Superman. But also, I hope because it's the beginning of a much larger mystery/tragedy storyline, and it grows organically out of the run we've been doing for over two years. I've been planning something along these lines ever since I brought back Bucky.

CBR: Mark Millar is quoted as saying Marvel wanted to kill off a major character in "Civil War," but he refused – much to Goliath's detriment. Was this something you wanted to do or was it dictated from the higher-ups?

Brubaker: Millar also said Eminem was going to star in "Wanted," so I'd take that with a grain of salt. No version of "Civil War" I ever heard of had Cap or Iron Man dying in it, and I was in the room for three days while the last act of "Civil War" got hammered out. The reason this is happening in the book now, right on the heels of "Civil War," is because "Civil War" left me with a few options, but most of them I felt had explored already in "Captain America" or in other recent books - such as my own first arc of "Daredevil." So, since I didn't want to do a "Cap gets on a motorcycle and finds America" story, or a "Cap behind bars" story, I decided to bump up the timeline on my big "Red Skull Strikes Back" story instead, and go straight for the jugular. The basic idea of this arc – "The Death of the Dream" – is something I've been building towards since issue #1. Some of the beats and the way it goes down, of course, have been altered since this follows "Civil War's" ending so closely.

CBR: With so many major characters having died and returned – some multiple times – how difficult is it to come up with a fresh way to resurrect dead iconic heroes? Do you go so far as to plan the return when you plot the death?

Brubaker: I didn't, no. But I've got the next two years of Cap plotted, if that says anything.

CBR: How long ago was the decision to kill Cap made and how has that affected the stories you've told in the meantime?

Brubaker: The final decision was made between me and [Editor] Tom Brevoort after the big "Civil War" summit meeting. I told him what I wanted to do, and how I wanted to do it, and then I began laying the groundwork for it in the "Civil War" tie-in issues of "Captain America."

CBR: Allright, final question, letting go of the seriousness for a bit – Do editorial mandates require you to make Cap a big crybaby like Millar made him in the end of "Civil War?"

Brubaker: I don't think there are any editorial mandates. I think Millar just hates America.

So yeah, Its good to hear that this was a direction Brubaker was planning on taking the title regardless of Civil War or anything, but the more I think about it, the more it becomes absolutely unbelievably clear... Bucky Barnes is being primed to be the new Captain America...

So lets think for a second... Bucky is a Cap who needs redemption, who dedicated his life to fighting for America, only to have that life taken from him and twisted into the political opposite, pitting him as The Winter Soldier. Also: He hasn't been around for years and years in the same way cap has, so he still has the strong emotional disconnect.

Its also good to hear that he has the next two years on the book plotted out... I was really nervous that #26 was the end.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

Well, as obvious as it does sound that Bucky will be the new Cap, I wonder where that leaves the reported Way-written Winter Soldier book?

If it happens, will it be about his past untold adventures? Will we have a new Winter Soldier? Will it be Jack Monroe back from the dead? Or someone else?

Or will it never happen and we can all thank God for that?

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

Winter Soldier: Origins? Tell his backstory maybe?

And where the hell did you hear that? Daniel Way writing Winter Soldier makes me want to poop out my eyes.

Didn't he write that issue of that Civil War tie in starring the Winder Soldier?

It was rumoured on Newsarama. I believe all they needed was to find an artist, and it was full steam ahead.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

I still wonder if Daniel Way and Danny Way (the Skateboarder) are the same person, but I'm too lazy to go and look it up.

No, that was our good pally Brubaker.

I'm hoping that's bullcrap... Really sincerely hoping.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

This is either going to be really really good or the worst thing ever.

I vote on the latter. But the first issue had pontenial.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

So, I just read the issue. It's pretty good actually. But like I said to Proj, it's not a question of whether or not the story is good, it's a complaint about the ridiculousness of this making the national news.

I'm not sure if I believe Brubaker when he says he didn't have the return planned out when he hammered this out, but it doesn't matter either way.

And the method of his death is interesting, seeing as how in 1602 he survived a point-blank bullet to the head. As I remember, Marvel went to great lengths to make it understand that 1602 happens in regular 616 continuity.

This would have been a whole lot more meaningful if it had happened in Civil War #7, seeing has how basically nothing happened in that issue, especially in comparison to this issue. It also would have made Civil War much better than it was.
