Saw this earlier on yahoo news and was just :shock: wow ........ and the way he died. Shot! No heroic death , No villain responsible , No sacrifice. Just shot. That is seriously ****ed up.
makes death mean more and weird thing is he's fictional yet i'm more shocked by his death than all the celebrities you hear about.

I totally agree with Mole, his being killed by a faceless assassin impacted me more than had he died in a huge heroes v villains battle.
I wonder who's taking up the mantle.

just thought of a theory that may of been mentioned or may be flawed BUT what if the sniper guy is the Punisher!
1 of 2 cool ways to go with it is.
1 Punisher kills criminals so technically captain America is a criminal now and punisher could of been getting close for undercover work like he use to when he was frank the cop.
or
2 Punisher does it to try and strengthen his side. Sounds weird but wasn't it a sniper that shot Aunt may? that would make Spider-man angryer at the system and give him a reason to pull out all stops.

Didn't you read Civil War? Captain America is almost Frank's God. He's the reason why he became a soldier, and he respects him so much he wouldn't even hit him back. He's not going to turn around and shoot him.

I understood that there wasn't an unknown shooter. The shooter was Crossbones at the request of Red Skull... which would fit into the flow of that particular title... Sharon Carter fired the finishing two gut shots.
(Captain America is one of Marvel's best ongoing titles right now...)

I mean, seriously, when was the last time Marvel said someone's death would be final and they didn't come back to life a few months later? There will be a brief- maybe even lengthy- mourning period, and then, all of a sudden, in a story that will almost certain be written by Bendis, he will return in a blaze of glory!
However, on the off-chance that he stays dead, my respect for Marvel will have recuperated significantly. So let's all hope that happens.

Well, it looks like either Frank Castle or Bucky is going to take over the mantle. Personally i would prefer Bucky as it would cheapen the Punisher to have him imitate Cap. Also it would be slightly amusing if the Punisher sold caps cowl on ebay for monies rather than wear it.
