The first arc was great. Bachalo was superb on the art side, especially the splash page in #3, Wolverine's version of "get off my lawn" . Bradshaw is good too and I very much enjoyed his art in #4. The good news is that Bachalo will indeed be back (see link below) as he and Bradshaw will be alternating arcs.

Having Krakoa be the land that the school is built upon and now is on Wolverine's side, that's just great. Talk about the land itself being a great defense against intruders. And now having Genesis and Angel in the school will make things that much more interesting. Although #4 explains about the two new students, you definitely have to read Uncanny X-Force (#1-19) for the entire story. It's worth it.

Angel having to be a student again is also a bit weird, but it's something I'm looking forward to seeing how that goes for him and everyone. Especially Iceman who now basically is his "guardian" while he's in the no-memory-of-who-he-was state.


Also, Jason Aaron talks about the series over at Newsarama. Favorite part of mine:

Nrama: There was a lot of interesting character stuff in the first three issues, especially with Iceman. It seems that other characters have been telling him for years that he isn't living up to his full potential, power-wise — I remember being a kid and reading Uncanny X-Men #314 back in 1994, where Emma Frost takes control of his body — and you really dealt with that issue head-on in #2. Will we continue to see him heading down that path?

Aaron: Yes, most definitely. That was not a one-shot thing. I'm a big Iceman fan, and I felt the same way, where we've seen fits and starts throughout his life, where he seems to sort of tease that he has this great potential, and that his power is limitless, and he's an omega-level mutant, but it's not always been followed up on. I just wanted to firmly establish him as one of the premier X-Men over the course of this, and that'll be a goal going forward. You can't do that in just one scene. I had a lot of fun with that scene, but that's just the beginning. I'll continue to try and develop Iceman — not just in terms of his powers, but obviously we teased in that issue that there might be a little bit of a love interest going on between he and Kitty, so that's something that will continue to be explored. A lot of big plans for Iceman coming up this year.

I read the issues online, and I enjoyed them enough that I will probably get the trades of this as they come out. I also read SCHISM. I like a lot of this, particularly Kid Gladiator and Quentin Quire.

I do, however, hate the Hellfire Brats. They are a very, very bad villain for a series. They are fun as an occasional thorn in the side, but to me, the law suit is enough of a finish that I would assume it was the end. But they're relevance to SCHISM indicates they're to be a big bad. And they suck.

So, I'm not sure. I think this has a lot of room for fun.

Every issue has been a great read and what's coming up is looking to be very exciting. Nick Bradshaw is a great artist to this book, along with Bachalo. I love both their work and hope they stay on as the two rotating artists for a while. Although Jorge Molina (if I'm not mistaken), will be penciling #14.

The arc Bradshaw drew where Wolverine went to the alien casino with Quire was incredible. Kitty not actually being pregnant, but infested with mini Broods (which of course was alluded to with cover to #5 or 6). Kid Gladiator being turned into a Brood and wanting to stay as one because "Kid Gladiator looks incredibly awesome!" was perfect. I love the character. As well as Quire. Making a psychic shotgun? How fun is that?

Professor Starblood wanting to kill Broo (the 'mutant' Brood student) because he messing up the galactic food chain by not acting they he should as a Brood was crazy. And teasing that the BAMF creatures aren't what they actually seem to be is a plot point Jason Aaron has said he would follow up at a later date. I'm intrigued.

It was also great to see Kitty kiss back Iceman in #7 once the whole Brood thing was resolved. It'd be nice to see them as a couple. It'll also be nice to see Iceman in a relationship again, hopefully one that lasts this time.

#8 came out two weeks ago, which was a stand-alone story with the new Hellfire Club hiring Sabretooth to attack the X-Men, with Creed choosing to by going after "their heart", which he says it's Hank. So to get to Hank he goes and attacks his girlfriend, Abigail of S.W.O.R.D. They have a great awesome space battle, drawn by Bachalo, and the kids also manage to steal a space jet to get something from the casino Wolverine was at before.

The best part of the issue was hands down this:

Not only is it a great, touching scene between Angel and Genesis, but the irony that hides behind everything here between them is too good to put into words. When Angel lost his wings way back when and Apocalypse took him, "promising to help" him and then turning him into Archangel, you see some similarities between both moments and you can't help but love what Aaron did.

Bachalo will be drawing up to issue #12 (8-12 is his second run on the series), with Nick Bradshaw doing #13 and only the cover for #14. Hopefully the fill in artist, mentioned earlier, is just for that issue.

The bit with Wolverine and Kid Omega gambling in space seemed like a bit of a dip in quality to me, but it was still good. The Beast vs. Sabertooth ish and the first AvX tie-in were great though. This book's at its best when they focus on the school rather than hijinks off in space or whatever.

Was thinking about picking up the hardcover collections of this series. Would you recommend this series to someone who isn't familiar with current story lines in X comics? Haven't read an x-men comic in YEARS. I do love the x-men universe/mythology, however. The x-men are what got me into collecting/reading comics back in the early-to-mid 90s. And Bachalo has been one of my favorite artists since GENERATION X! Thoughts...?

I'd definitely recommend this series to anyone, even someone who isn't in much knowledge of the X-corner of the Marvel U. Jason Aaron handles the characters with great care to the readers where it doesn't matter if you aren't familiar with them, you get to know who they are and more about them through character interaction.

I've bought the first two HCs and it's worth it. It's great having the X-Men in a school setting again with students. Bachalo & Bradshaw have done phenomenal work (and Jorge Molina too on later issues).

Definitely pick it up if you get the chance.

I've been on a classic x-men kick recently (having just purchased the 2 Claremont/Lee omnibuses, as well as the dark Phoenix saga hardcover, and the joss wheedon astonishing omnibus) and was in the mood to see what's going on in the current x universe these days.

It's going to be great for the series to return to the type of stories it was doing before AvX (though I did enjoy the tie-in issues).

And the cover to #25 is great. The best part is Glob Herman's reaction both on the phone and looking at the T-Rex. :lol:

I figured those he made himself like Iceman has done a few times.

I think that's how powers are passed. It's been done with Nightcrawler's & Scarlet Witch's daughter (from an alternate dimension), for example.

Two things. First I try not to read the solicits outside of checking creative teams as I think they spoil too much. Second my roommate is the one who gets WatXmen so I pay less attention to its solicits than normal.

Not reading them is kind of refreshing.

True, that's an excellent point as Marvel themselves spoiled Storm as the new teacher after trying to make it a surprise with #19's solicitation.
