(I could have sworn there was a thread for this, but I can't find it for the life of me)

Anyway, after picking up the first issue of Boys, I didn't intend to keep reading. It felt like it took the worst parts of Ennis' writing and cut out the human factor that makes his stuff really good. But for some reason I kept reading, and I'm glad I did. Hughie's the ****, and he seems to be softening out the harder edges of even the most psychotic of the Boys. If no one's picked up issue 4, you need to, because it's REALLY becoming apparent that what he did to religion with Preacher, he's doing to the superhero comic with this.

His analog of DC is chauvinistic, power-obsessed megalomaniacs concerned only with licensing and whoring out their image. And Marvel's a bunch of drug-stealing, kiddy-entertaining dumbasses who sodomize each other and cut themselves. It's crude, sure, but it's spot-on, and friggin' brilliant. I love it.

Is anyone else reading this?

Just like you, I tried the first issue and wasn't really impressed. I'll try again one day.

I thought there was a thread too. But there wasn't. I think only 5 people here read it. I would've made a thread.....but al lmy comic threads die away due to no one reading them like "Daughters of the Dragon" and "Ares".

There've been comments about it in various threads. I said this about it last week in the Pick-n-Pull thread.

The Boys is one my favorite comics this week. This issue was awesome.

The snide jabs they take at famous Superheroes/Super Groups is just great. While it's standard Ennis with the nudity, vulgarity and whatnot...the behind the scenes look into private lives of superheroes isn't anything new to readers of Watchmen, Authority, Powers....but it's damn entertaining.

He's got a mock-Teen Titans celebrating a win over a bad guy by going back to HQ and doing "frat boy things with coked-out ladies of the night".

The mock-JLA have a meeting where all they do is bicker about merchandising rights and several people like the super-fast A-Train (Flash) can't understand why 3 members have the most profits (The Holy trinity of DC).

A mock-X23 is shown to be "a cutter" and hides the scars by dressing in those goth-stocking sleeves.

A mock-Nightwing secretly likes boys.

I won't even talk about what they say about Judge Dredd.

I'm telling you.....this book is great!!!!

Its deffinatly getting better. 6 issues from now its either be great or I'll be disgusted with myself for still buying it. either way I think I'll still be buying it...

You just wanna see the Titans run train again. :p

But yeah. It seriously gets better with each issue.

What it has that the afforementioned books don't is cutting commentary on the current state of affairs for the comic book industry. The Seven and Teenage Kix are pretty obvious rips on how DC and Marvel run their businesses, and they're entertaining as hell. I'm honestly a little surprised that DC let the book hit shelves in the state it was in. Either way, cool stuff. This could totally be the next Preacher. Anyone who's not on the bandwagon totally needs to get on before it's too late to be as cool as me.

Ok I heard this was really good. So I went to my LCS yesterday, I kimmed through issue four I think and there was a whole orgy going on. Some weird chick was cutting herself and another guy was sitting on the toilet geting his balls massaged by a werewolf guy? It was utterly disgusting and sick and perverted. And I guess the shawn of the dead guy was sitting in a van and gets stabbed with a syringe. But.....I couldn't put it down. it was pretty damn good. i love this aspect of superheroes, it's like reading tabloids. Damn good and I'll have to find more stuff by Ellis.

You really need to read more into it. It's so much more than that.

And it's Ennis. Not Ellis. Ennis is working on Punisher MAX (the best damn book out there!) and his work is always like this. ALWAYS!

Garth Ennis right? i was thinking Warren all of a sudden. Yeah, I figure it is, but like I said, i only skimmed through. Managers get mad if you're reading the issue. So yeah, I'll pick it up tomorrow or by next babysitting gig.

EDIT: BTW, What happened to Pandaman

I put myself into voluntary exile until you realized how much I meant to you.

I can't believe you haven't read Ennis. You HAVE HAVE HAVE to check out the trades of Preacher. It's easily one of the best omic series ever written. The sex and violence is over the top and the theological insight is a little disappointing, but it really highlights how well Ennis writes sympathetic characters.

Somehow, I doubt this. But yeah, I;m really not familiar with Ennis.

I think I got banned for saying something vulgar about gamma man. I'm not quite sure.

But everyone should pick up Preacher. Ennis has written a lot of good stuff, but Preacher is his magnum opus. Seriously. It's that good. Jesse Custer is the coolest lead character ever.

I stopped reading preacher when a redneck was ****ing a chicken. I don't live too far from people like that. I live in the city but the country isn't too far away. And alot of the settings happen in Texas which I thought was cool. But yeah, the chicken ****ing was a turn off and then when the girl gets ressurrected by what I'm guessing was God. That was little bit of a turn off.

It doesn't matter. Keep reading it.

And the chicken ****er dude is closer to my people than your people. You're just from Texas. I'm from the Deep South.

pffffft.... I grew up in the country, lady. I was raised in Deep Georgia, where (despite everything I heard in the media) I saw more interracial relationships and less racism than any of the cities I've been. Folks aren't more stupid, and they don't **** animals. There is a LOT of meth, though. a LOT of meth.
