Fantastic Four Reboot

Some of the marketing techniques are downright weird, too. Miles Teller has already been quoted saying that he knows it's not going to get good reviews - when is the last time actors doing promotion have said anything like that? Also, I was listening to the radio this morning and they had this weird thing where they played a commercial for the movie, then the DJ/host cut in and started talking about how excited she was to see it, how it's so great that they landed the hottest cast, etc. They were obviously trying to get the word-of-mouth hype out there but it was so obviously scripted and so awkward it was hard not to see through it.

"Look, it's probably going to suck, but GO SEE OUR MOVIE!"

Also, it's now at 9% on Rotten Tomatoes... wow... that's horrible...

Well, at least this might mean that Marvel studios will get the rights to the FF sooner than expected...

What if Fox is like "Marvel, we'll give you the FF rights back if you let us do the X-Men TV series."?

A guy can dream... le sigh..

WOW. You know something's bad when they take down *officially released* clips!!

I don't understand why people are so excited at the idea of Marvel getting the rights back. There is almost no way the franchise can be redeemed at this point.

Everything about this is fascinating. If the stuff about studio meddling is true, I can't fathom why you would bring a guy in for his specific style and storytelling ability, then get a bunch of no-names to interfere with it.

If you're a director hired to adapt a well known, established, and pretty widely loved character/team into a movie I can't fathom why you would be so arrogant as to tell the stars of your movie not to bother familiarizing themselves with the source material because it's not going to follow any of it.

I feel like if you aren't going to do it right and to the point of satisfying the people who would want to see it, why bother? What a waste of money.

Marvel has clearly shown that they can actually adapt their own properties properly. I'd be willing to bet they would actually do the Fantastic Four justice if they got it back and used them.

Completely disagree. As for why people are excited about Marvel maybe getting the rights back (that's a big "maybe"), it's because, as Ice pointed out, Marvel knows how to handle/adapt their various characters resulting in films that are, overall, a lot of fun, charming, and huge box office draws. Marvel respects the source material. I can't think of a Marvel Studios movie made yet where the actors were encouraged/required to read the source material and familiarize themselves with character histories, etc.

That alone speaks volumes, besides Marvel's already well-established recipe for success: that being, a perfect blend of embracing the comic roots while also going in new directions, etc.

Fox has managed that with their X-Men franchise (with a few bumps along the way), but this is the third Fantastic Four movie they've made and all three are apparently crap (I can confirm the first two were, haven't seen the reboot that just came out... that's definitely waiting until DVD). I was hoping they'd do a good job, but a lot of the crap behind the scenes during pre production and filming was extremely worrying... and I say that as someone who generally was open minded about the film during that time.

But, well, looks like the third turd in the Fantastic Four movie bowl.

I hope there is eventually a Fantastic Four Director's Cut released to see what Trank's undiluted vision resulted in (sort of like the Daredevil - Director's Cut, which is a notably better film than the lackluster theatrical version).

But, then again, it seems Trank didn't respect the source material either...

Yup. But I don't think the brand is damaged beyond repair.

This is why, eventually, I think Fox may negotiate away the FF rights to expand their X-Men rights (maybe into TV rights with that proposed new X-Men TV series). Marvel Studios making a new FF film 5-6 years down the road would certainly pique interest in most comic fans, and I have no doubt the casting would be spot on and increase that existing hype, the end result will likely be a fun, interesting, exploration/adventure/fantasy/sci-fi mash-up... and the first trailer will undoubtedly attract massive attention even in general media when that were to hypothetically drop.

Marvel would kill it on a Fantastic Four movie... and being that the FF were sort of the birthing point of the 60's Marvel continuity era (lasting to this day... err, at least until Secret Wars), I think it's appropriate they finally get a GOOD movie adaptation.

It can be redeemed by hyping up a well done thing. Imagine the end credits of Avengers 3 Part 2 being classic Doom getting the Tesseract. I'm getting moist just thinking about it.

I do agree though, this whole production is fascinating.

Honestly, that'd be a fantastic way of ushering in the next phase of Marvel films.

It's all just wishful thinking right now, but hopefully after this debacle Fox will see the FF property as not worth their time (only because they just don't seem to understand the franchise, and the sense of wonder, exploration, etc it should convey) and possibly offer it back to Marvel in exchange for an expansion of Fox's X-Men rights (including TV rights, which Marvel still retains, but which could greatly benefit Fox if they do it right). I can see Marvel being open to the idea since it seems--admittedly I don't read the 616 books so may be wrong--that they've largely written off a lot of the mutant characters (even retconning Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver).

We'll see.

Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in not knowing who their parents are is kind of their thing. At one point they thought the Whizzer was their father.

Just got out of it with my buddy. Literally was just him, this couple that left halfway through, and myself. I wasn't expecting it to be this kind of bad. It was just really dumb and boring. It reminded me of Green Lantern. Random **** happening while they just dump information at you. It was one of those movies where you just feel like you wasted your time watching it. 3/10

Marvel should kill Captain America and have Bucky take over. Then rehire Chris Evans as The Human Torch.

Marvel Studio phone rings....

"Hi Marvel, it's Fox here.....Yeah I know it sucked. That's kinda why I am calling. I know the weekend isn't over, but the writing is on the wall. Basically, I think we have some movie rights you might be interested in for cheap... like X-Men TV rights cheap?"

The general audience is not predisposed towards infinite good will, there are only so many bites at the apple a franchise can get before the general audience writes it off as crap and the FF may have used up all their chances. None of the 3 theatrical films have been any good. Why should people who have no knowledge of the comics have any faith in this franchise now?

Because if Marvel was to make the movie, it would mean Marvel was to make it, not FOX. As I said, Marvel clearly has shown that they actually know how to adapt their comics into movies and be successful at it. They're track record is great enough that they deserve the faith people give them. You don't have to be a comic book fan to know that they're smarter at making comic book movies.

And if Marvel was to make a Fantastic Four film, it wouldn't be until Phase 4, meaning until around 2020 earliest, so that's at least 5 years away, giving enough "breathing room" between that and this current one.

But can the general audience tell the difference between movies made by Marvel and movies that are made by other studios that are using Marvel's licenses? Because if most of the general audience can't tell that difference, MCU reputation will not help the FF here. I think it take more then 5 years to wash the taste of this last movie away, I think this property will be radioactive for a long while yet. You can't make 3 bad movies in a row and expect the general audience will give the benefit of the doubt to the next one.

How would they not tell difference?

That didn't stop people with Spider-Man 3/The Amazing Spider-Man.

You can't make 3 bad movies in a row and expect the general audience will give the benefit of the doubt to the next one.
And no one saying that benefit of the doubt would just happen. Of course there will still be those who'd be skeptical. A trailer can fix that.

I disagree. All it takes to get general audiences interested is a good trailer, and comic fans like us will mostly be highly interested merely because it's Marvel Studios doing a Fantastic Four movie.

Marvel will do it justice, when they eventually get the rights back.

As a fan of the Transformers franchise I can tell you that that's just not true
